So alot of the script germinated from Natalie Portman's portrayal. For instance, apparently she couldn't cry on queue during the audition, but did manage to weep during her audition when the little brother's murder is mentioned. Also, the plot point about Matilda quitting smoking, and that she never kills anyone on screen, were concessions made to Natalie Portman's parents after she was offered the role. So even though the script existed in some form before Natalie joined the production (in fact, the script and role was a birthday gift from Luc Besson to Jean Reno) a lot of the script took shape around Natalie Portman herself. By the way, Leon is my favorite movie. Obviously the material is very morally challenging, but each time I have seen the movie I appreciate it even more. Thank you for watching and sharing with us!

Best moment is Matilda at Leon's door. Camera stays on Natalie the whole time and doesn't cut away to a hand opening the door. Just the golden light that hits her that tells us it's been opened. One of my favourite movies and an amazing feelgood movie.

According to IMDb, it also went by "The Professional" in several countries besides the U.S., including Australia, India and Spain. Which cut it was isn't clear, but I'm guessing that it was the U.S. cut. Nowadays, that cut is hard to find and the only one widely available appears to be the international version ("Leon"), which has been renamed to "Leon the Professional," presumably so that moviegoers who know it by "The Professional" can better recognize it.

I have this on DVD. The original theatrical release was the same, no matter where it was screened, just different names. “Léon” when it debuted in 1994 in France, but renamed “The Professional” for the American market.

One of my favorite movies. A lot of fuss is made about about Matilda's infatuation with Leon but honestly it's not unheard of for a 13 year old girl to have a crush on an older man, especially considering he's probably the only man who ever showed her genuine compassion. Leon to his credit never reciprocated her advances. Just a great movie.

The history about Luc Besson is very unclear as well (I think he is a great director, and for having met him once or twice when younger, he is a nice guy with people, but I can't say he is great when it's come about relationship)

Luc Besson became one of my favorite directors when I saw the film "la femme Nikita" in 1991. What's cool is that Jean Reno plays a cleaner in that one too. My 3 favorite Luc Besson films are Leon, La Femme Nikita, and The Fifth Element. I've heard that "The Big Blue" is amazing, but I still haven't seen it yet.

Only Gary Oldman can ham up a delivery THAT much and still have it seem completely 100% in-character for the role he's playing. Unbelievable talent at making you truly believe in a character, and the supporting cast deserve a lot of credit helping him sell it by convincingly showing even his allies being in terror of him. One of the best villains in cinema IMO. (Ma-Ma from Dredd is another great example of completely chillingly terrifyingly believable.)

That isn't something that people who live a *righteous* life have to do. Killing Matilda right then and there was the *smart* move. His strict code of *survival* dictates that he not complicate his life with such vulnerable connections. He *knew* it could literally be the death of him if he didn't shoot her that night, and ultimately it was. It wasn't about ending her pain, it was that he's a *f-cking assassin* and that's a whole adolescent, freshly-orphaned *child* who's being pursued by a gang of psychos that he wants nothing to do with. He couldn't do it. He had a moment of weakness. Because he's human. To be a truly invincible assassin one must be an emotionless robot. He has his plant, he has classic Hollywood musicals, that's it, beyond that, he's The Terminator. ...Except he's NOT... None of us are. And that moment of weakness does *kill* him ultimately. Which sucks for him, but if he stuck to his code and got rid of her when he had the chance, she'd be dead and there wouldn't be a movie...

Jean Reno (Leon), is very famous in Europe, and especially in France (though he is Spanish to begin with) where he got his major roles, whether it's in Luc Besson's movies (Subway, Le Grand Bleu, Nikita, Léon), or with other directors and in other genres. He did a handful of comedies : Les Visiteurs (1993), L'Opération Corned Beef (1991), Wasabi (2001)... He also did voice acting for french versions, dubbing Mufasa in The Lion King, or Porco Rosso in the eponymous movie form the Ghibli Studios. His international career count movies like French Kiss (1995), Mission: Impossible (1996), Godzilla (1998), Da Vinci Code (2006)... One of his "under the radar" movies, which I have a soft spot for is Avis de Mistral (2014), a slice of life where he plays a gruff grandfather having to take care of his grandchildren for a summer.

Yes, she gets it! Always glad to see a reactor (one of few) who actually gets the dynamic between Leon and Mathilda. She has been abused, she doesn't really know any better and develops a crush ... and that's about it, nothing really creepy going on at any time, and especially nothing coming from Leon. Uncomfortable?? Hell yes, but that's all intentional, 2 broken people who don't know how to express themselves learning to do so will have awkward and uncomfortable situations, but they work it out. I love this movie, Gary Oldman gives his possibly best villain ever, Jean Reno is incredibly beliveable in his role and what a great first role for Natalie Portman.

You look at Matilda's upbringing, and the fact that this man rescued her & showed her genuine compassion - a young girl in her circumstance may develop a crush and/or misconstrue her new feelings as romantic. This is the full movie. There’s a cut just called The Professional that takes out the vast majority of Mathilda’s “love” stuff and that’s the one I saw growing up. Because of that they had to cut soooo much important story and character development. I get why they did it, kind of. I think audiences are mature enough to understand that a child from a home like hers wouldn’t understand what love is. Or that there’s a difference between feeling safe and cared for and love. Really just the difference between sexual love and every other kind. It was definitely a risk on the filmmakers’ part, but it’s a complicated story about a lot of raw emotions, and that’s the point.

The American edit cuts out a lot of the "relationship" but it also cuts out the scenes of her going out on hits with him as well. Without those scenes she goes from firing a paintball at a jogger in the park to walking into the DEA building with a gun and no explanation of why she thought she could handle it. There needs to be an in-between edit that includes the training but maybe leaves out some of the other.

I agree that for American sensibilities it would be nice to have something that keeps that character progression, because the full cut gets too much (in my opinion) unwarranted criticism which overshadows the rest of the brilliance. But… such is a French film vs an American audience, which I say as an American haha

Some confusion may have occurred when it debuted in France in 1994 as “Léon,” but renamed “The Professional” for the American market. Again, same content. I own the special DVD edition of this version that Mary Cherry viewed. It is the 1996 international re-release with the additional footage. When it was first screened in France it was titled, “Léon: Version Integrale.” It has since been renamed (at least on my DVD packaging) “Léon The Professional (Uncut International Version). All this info is from the insert included.

36:35 - "The last of us with Joel and Ellie" Léon: The Professional was an influence for this game, Naughty Dog themselves confirmed it themselves before the release of their game at the 2012 Pax Prime Expo. And I want to say, it is quite obvious as the evolution of the relationship between the 2 main characters are similar. Leon and Joel are both grumpy old men with little humanity in them who lead violent lives to survive. This is due to the fact that they have lost someone dear to them, his girlfriend for Léon, his daughter for Joël. They both meet a teenage girl with a big mouth who, as the story develops, will directly remind them of the person they lost, his daughter for Joel through his father-daughter dynamic, his girlfriend for Leon through the pseudo-love story between him and Mathilda. Their relationship is complicated at first, Leon and Joel can't trust a little girl, and they don't let them do anything. They both refused to let them touch a weapon for example, Leon gives her one to make her leave, but he refuses to let her touch the others. But the two girls will quickly prove capable and useful, Mathilda when she shoots out the window and then takes care of the hotel employee, Ellie when she kills the guy who was trying to drown Joel and helps him to push the piano for example. Either way, it ends with a scene where the men teach the girls how to use a sniper rifle, showing that they are now starting to be partners. In the second half of the story, the two girls are kidnapped by a villain (Stanfields in Leon, David in TLOU), and the two men come to the rescue of their daughters and they hug for the first time. . The villains are very similar, they're both crazy leaders of a group of men who rule the roost, they both want to kill the girls and they both have an inappropriate gesture towards them (Standfield when he touched Mathilda's lips in the bathroom, David when he touched Ellie's hand in the cell) The climax of the story is also very similar too, they both have to escape from a building full of soldiers, especially at the end when Leon sees the light at the end of the hall. It's like Joel seeing the light from the elevator. It's even clearer when you see an earlier version of the story, Ellie had to escape through an air duct only she could fit through while Joel was stuck with the bad guys... just like Leon (at 21:55 in the video below) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpaZonywbLKdic0 So to sum it up, they're similar characters, with similar personality traits, similar pasts, similar age, they go through similar character arcs following a similar sequence of events... BTW Her dad stole the narcotics to pay for the school and send Mathilda away, so she would have a chance for a normal life. He was a bad man, he was not very smart, but he did love his daughter. Died trying to do the right thing by her in his messed up way. The version intégrale is over 25 ming longer, but also more on the nose with Mathilda trying to seduce Léon. US test audiences did not like that. The movie Léon loves rewatching is "It’s Always Fair Weather" from 1955. Starring Gene Kelly, who of course also starred in the 1952 "Singin' in the Rain".

This movie was great with some good acting. If you're interested in watching a sequel (of sorts), watch Colombiana staring Zoe Saldana. It's about a girl who grew up to be a cleaner after her family got killed by the drug cartel. It was meant to be the direct sequel but when that fell through, it was rewritten to be a stand-alone movie. But you can tell it got its roots from Leon.

Leon was developmentally challenged so he wasn't necessarily being taken advantage of. Think about it this way, he was a very effective and advanced killer with the mentality of a child with a difficulty learning social skills. The fact that he couldn't read until he was almost forty changes my perspective of his situation and Tony's role in his life. He wasn't concerned because Leon learned to read but because he was worried that Leon was getting a reckless and false confidence after years of Tony making sure he was looked after. He never asked for his money like that because he was satisfied with what he had but the talk about banks is fairly straightforward. Tony knows that Leons money is dirty and needs to be cleaned and held onto. If he gave a woman as Tony thought at that moment she might buy a car and if she doesn't make enough to buy a car she could get audited. This is tieing strings from Leon to the federal government. That's just one example of the many thoughts and concerns that explains Tony's attitude. He also paid for her to go to private school and probably went on to pay for her college tuition and then she probably got a big check with cleaned money from an account that wasn't connected to anything illegal. She probably even could have gone back and became a "cleaner" if she was still determined to do so. Nothing can negate Tony's clear pain at the death of Leon. Tony probably looked at Leon as a son despite being closer in age to a brother.

people get really mad at this movie and call it pedophilic, but it's not. matilda has a crush on leon, similar to when a patient falls in love w their nurse. he is her hero. he never reciprocates those feelings, only telling her he loves her at the end to get her to leave him and go to safety. is he lonely? yes, he has no friends or family that we know of. but he never in any way behaves inappropriately with her (besides teaching her how to be an assassin).

Mary, I've been following your channel for about a couple years now and I was always hoping that one day you would react to Leon: The Professional. This is one of my all time favorite films ever, it always hits me right in the feels every time I watch it. It's such a beautiful film, thank you so much for finally reacting to it! This film is a masterpiece and one of my favourites. John Reno, Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman brought their A Game. Especially Oldman, he plays the villain role so well, like Stansfield has to be one of the most vile, evil and corrupt movie villains. Two of my favourite scenes has to be Léon walking into the office and just destroying everyone and saving Mathilda and the bathroom scene. Two completely different scenarios that display good vs evil perfectly I mean “You will never be *alone* “ and “This is from... Mathilda” That is just outstanding acting. They really don’t make films like this anymore. This is probably one of the most emotional scenes ever put to screen. It’s the same as a father saying goodbye to his daughter. Léon sacrificing his life for Matilda’s, a girl he only knew for a short time,who he made such a strong bond with is the ultimate act of heroism, bravery and most importantly, love. This film is about love. It also probably one of the greatest revenge moments ever, this left me speechless. This film was flawless from start to finish.

I saw this movie on TV when I was 7. It was presented somehow as the directors cut, though it was still edited for tv so not so much blood etc. so I got to see the “cleaning” scenes and the diner scene. I absolutely fell in love with this movie. When she said Leon was her lover to the hotel guy my eyes BUGGED. I was like “what movie am I watching??” Again I was 7 lol. But now I was hooked and wanted to see what would happen as my experience with movies were mostly Disney princess. When Leon tells her he loves her and lets her down the chute I was sobbing. It still gets me. I knew as a kid that her and Leon couldn’t work as a couple, knew kids and grown-ups shouldn’t have those types of relationships so it was never an issue me seeing that so young. I know ppl have a lot of issue with the kid and grown up ick, but I think the way that Jean Reno played Leon as very childlike made it not creepy. You knew he wasn’t trying to be that to her. I love Leon. I fell in love with Leon too.❤ It was such a beautiful movie and so heartbreaking, but bittersweet. I will always recommend it to watch bc it shows two broken ppl patching each other up. Two very unlikely ppl and they clicked. One last note: I saw a cosplayer at a local convention dressed as Leon and I RAN to catch up to him. When I flagged him down he told me he was bringing his daughter a snack and she was dressed as Matilda! So I followed him to where she was and there she was with the plant and the italian food bag! And then the Leon cosplayer told me to hold out my handand said”From Matilda.” He gives me the key ring!! I was beyond happy🎉
