I've got way too many turntables too. When I can't sleep at night, instead of counting sheep, I visualize my turntable collection (at least 36 turntables which is pretty crazy; fun, but crazy) and that usually knocks me out cold. ;)
@TorontoJon
@TorontoJon 3 жыл бұрын
Let me be clear that I don't mention my 36 (or more ) turntables to boast; I mention the number of them out of sheer horror as much as I enjoy them, have some in different rooms, have others carefully packed away in boxes, etc, but they make me realize that I could have purchased a super hi-end turntable or two and spent FAR LESS even though I bought those turntables over a 22-year period and bought them at thrift stores or on eBay when there was no vinyl revival and little interest in turntables.

Do you have any records?
@TorontoJon
@TorontoJon 3 жыл бұрын
@@Toogoodtobetrue458 Yes, I have at least 2,500 vinyl records and that's not including at least 100 45's and easily 200 or more 78's. Crikey, that's a lot of records and I don't actually envy collectors with thousands more because one doesn't have enough time in one's lifetime to listen to them all or to listen to them many times per album. I don't buy many newly released or reissued records (and not a single Record Store Day release so far) due to the hefty prices, especially in Canada, so I prefer to hunt for them at various thrift stores for a dollar or two each. My collection wasn't purchased overnight. I had maybe 30 records growing up (mostly soundtracks) and then the rest were purchased over a 25-year period and at least 95% of my used LP collection is scratch-free. I avoid severely scratched records and in terms of digging for records at thrift stores, for every record I own, I had to dig through 200 to 400 records to a) find one of interest to me and b) to find one that wasn't badly scratched, moldy, severely warped, etc. That's the thrill of the hunt. :)

Do you have any Technics turn tables? I have one my father gave me that has the issue with the arm not auto raising, I am suspecting it is a victim of Technics' bad design. If you have found anyone to work on it, could you please let me know?

My wife and her son bought me a wonderful birthday present this year, a Technics SL-10. I had one in high school, 1980, and always wanted to have one again. Thanks for your videos, they take me back to a simpler time of life where new vinyl was a true celebration.

8 turntables is a good start. Also your Denon doesn't use an electromagnet per se to apply downward tracking force....its uses the vertical servo motor. The tonearm actually contains 2 electromagnetic sensors for the vertical and horizontal movements and two servo correction motors for the vertical and horizontal movements. These control not only the tracking force, Q Damping, and anti skating but also the damping of tonearm resonances to below the audible frequencies! Both Sony and JVC used similar technologies. I've own my Denon DP-62L since 1984....and it's still one of the best sounding turntables in my collection. Good luck in your turntable travels!

Perhaps a good litmus test for whether or not one has too many turntables is if one has more turntables than actual records. THAT would be too many. Haha! ;)

Hi, great to see you again. I must admit I moved to a small niche in the spectrum of the Hi-Fi devices - the late '70s, early '80s mini-systems, like those ones from Aiwa and Pioneer. Great for small spaces and the wifey also likes them.. tolerates them, because of their small size and retro design.

Those are some super clean looking covers on those records. And an OG REM Murmer!! Nice pick. And that's a nice collection of turntables. Have you ever owned any vintage Dual turntables from Germany? The CS721 is worth the effort if it's in good condition. It's my favorite horse in my small stable. Over the past 30 years, I have collected quite a few turntables, all '70s and '80s direct drive models, but have sold off all but four. I kept two Japanese and two German tables. My total $ investment into all of them, including purchase and the inital service shop fees for recap, tuneups and adjustments has been less than $500. I'd have to spend 2x that to get anything of that quality today.

Nice tour! I narrowed my collection of vintage tables to only three. One example of each type of drive. 1: I also have a Technics SL 1300 as my direct drive. 2. A Dual 1229 as my idler drive. 3. A Thorens TD 160 belt drive. I originally bought the Thorens in 1977. I think the character and charm of the vintage tables far outweigh the small drop off in reproduction quality, which, at my age, I can't hear anyway. Love your channel.

Just recently replaced the feet and cleaned the pots to get the speed adjustment working again. Current problem is what someone else referred to as clogging, essentially a 60 cycle oscillation that makes long tones sound like they have vibrato. It's driving me nuts! The PL-518 is a slab-base, direct drive turntable with 0.03% Wow/Flutter. I need someone to see if it is fixable or if it is time to find something else. Recommendation? I have a Technics SL 1600 which I bought new in 1978. The SL 1600 was the update to your SL 1300 and it has only been serviced once since then. I loved Technics turntables since a close friend bought the original SL 1200 MK 1in 1973. I've always wanted an SL 1200 but couldn't afford one at the time so I have been asking him if he would sell it to me ever since but no go. So I'm saving up for the SL 1200G which I hope to buy this fall. Another good friend has a new in box Ortofon Concorde which he said he would give me if I successfully buy one. I'm psyched......I too will keep the two turntables as all my pre-amps have two phono inputs but like you I need to get a new rack to accommodate them. Between home, and my record store, I think I have about 10, but only 3 of them actually work properly. I have 2 Technics SL-23, both work well and I'm currently using one in my home system. 2 Technics SL1200mk2, one is very clean, but needs a new control board. The second is for parts. 1 Dual 1257 which belonged to my grandad, who passed away in 2011. It works, but has an auto-return, auto-stop issue. My Technics SL-B5 I've owned since the mid-eighties, which always works. It's my current workhorse at the store. An MCS (Technics) 6500, for sale here at my record store. A Rotel RP-1100Q, for sale here at the store, but needs new cables. A Marantz 6100, that is gorgeous and sounds great, but has an auto-return issue I've yet to resolve. A couple other junk tables, mostly for parts. The cream of the crop, which I plan on having completely restored, is an otherwise minty Pioneer PL-630. My thought is, if I ever get it fixed, it may be my last turntable. It's one of, if not the best fully auto table ever made by Pioneer. Yes, I have a problem...

I picked up two SL-1300s about a year ago. One of them is a 1300M with the only difference seeming to be better quality of the cabling over the 1300. I nicked one of the tonearm cables against the through-hole in the mounting plate for the auto mechanisms while regreasing and replacing the damping fluid so now I gotta re-wire the tonearm. I'm still having issues with auto start and stop and tracking seems to behave almost like anti skate is beyond maximum.

It is the first of your videoes I have stumpled across, but I'm looking forward to watch the rest (Just this video has made me sub). I'm sure that many will disagree, but I personally think the pearl of your collection is the Philips GA 312. As I assume you already know this is the turntable that can't go into a feedback loop. It's simply impossible. You can place it on the floor right in front of a giant power speaker, crank the volume to the max, and there will be no feedback what so ever. Try that with any other turntable and see what happens (try it with a Thorens and prepare to laugh). Due to the heavy platter, and awesome motor it runs really stable, and though some may think the tonearm looks a bit odd and clunky, it's actually pretty great. Besides that it's quite a looker. Not enough good things can be said about it. It sounds amazing, and holy mother of .... that baby has soul. I have the Philips GA 212 from the first production year (can be recognized by the plastic hinges, and the metal stick to hold the lid), and though I have had a ton of turntables coming through since the 70's, this baby has stayed with me all the way. This is the one I can't part with. When saying a ton I'm not kidding. I'm the type who simply can't see a turntable without bringing it home... And yes, I agree with everybody else in here; You can't have too many. Besides that I fix turntables and other hifi gear for people, and have had a steady stream coming through over the years. I therefore have tried quite a few. Lately we have moved to a smaller apartment, and since my wife doesn't share my passion, I have had to cut back. That actually hurts, but I do find a little comfort in still trying out, and reparing turntables, though I have to pass them on faster. I have downsized my collection to the GA 212 (of course), a Toshiba sr-f 330 (fully automatic beauty), and a Garrard SL 95 transcription, which I use specifically for my 78's. Besides that I have a 1915 Victrola I have restored from being a complete wreck to perfection. But since the steel needles and the heavy weight of the soundbox is kinda hard on the records, I only use it on special occasions (but due to the cool factor the wife has actually approved it for the living room despite its size.....YES!!!). I could write a novel here, but I better get to the point. Take this advice from someone who have had his hands on a countless number of turntables: DON'T PART WITH THE GA 312. Hang on to it what ever you do, or it will haunt you for the rest of your days. Some call the Philips turntables "Budget Thorens", as they should be some kind of Thorens knock off. But take a look at for instance Thorens TD 105. Does something look familiar? Then take a look at the production years and compare. Does that give you a hint about who knocked off who, and who the true inventers were? If you want to look further into things then look at who started making that floating suspention. Or else if you get your hands on a Thorens; Just use your ears and compare. Digging into things will show you just how misguided the majority are (but do prepare for a shitstorm if you say it loud). The auto stop/lift at the end of the record is easy to fix. You just have to ajust the sensivity of the light sensor a tiny little bit. It's done on a potentiometer on the main board. You can download the service manual from here, and see exactly which one. www.vinylengine.com/library/philips/ga-312.shtml It's free. Once again thanks for a great video. Stay safe and awesome. Best wishes from Denmark.

That SL-23 is really a little workhorse of a table. I have one that belonged to my grandfather. So it cost me nothing up front. It sat unused for decades. When I got it all I did was deoxit the switches and put on a new belt on. The speed is perfect and it sounds excellent with the original Shure M95ed on it once I replaced the stylus. I like your taste. It's important to me that you don't turn your nose up when it comes to bargain no frills tables like the SL-23. It's quite the performer.

Somebody else mentioned the lamp(s) inside the Phillips turntables; they're not merely for illuminating the buttons !! The non-linear resistance and current draw of the lamps is an integral part of the control circuit and if they are replaced with a different lamp, the turntable will not operate correctly. (Bang and Olufsen receivers have similar issues, and many other issues as well, uggh). The correct lamps were unavailable for years ---- the repair shop I worked for had a stash of them ---- but there might, I repeat *might* be correct-spec lamp replacements available nowadays from Record Doctor or Vinyl Junkie or some other turntable specialist that does repairs, and real-world tests the replacement parts they sell. Buying supposed "exact replacement" lamps from some random eBay seller or direct from China is likely to get you parts that will not work. You wouldn't believe the trouble we went through getting belts that would work properly for certain turntable models despite the seller's insistence that it was an "exact replacement".

@@albo1506 I am guessing you might be in Europe where those type of lamps might be somewhat commoner. They are extremely uncommon here in the US; Although I'm sure there will be online sellers selling what they claim to be exact replacements. We have fought that battle with regards to obtaining turntable belts, and an awful lot of sellers are either ignorant or out and out liars. There's also a lot of counterfeit parts coming out of Asia these days and I have seen counterfeit CD transports and counterfeit mosfets and counterfeit STK output IC modules. BTW, I used to read lots of sci-fi as a kid and I vaguely remember an author named Poul Andersen.

Removable headshells add a point of possible bad contact between the headshell and the tonearm and can lead to poorer audio quality. SL-1200s are robust but suffer from "cogging" where the rotation speed isn't quite perfect that can be heard on extended notes.

I don't like the japanese plastics although the SL1200 is a very nice player and earned its fame... but, being a dutchman i like the Philips more. In the '80's i owned one but gave it away (stupid;-( and bought a cd player. Early 2000's i saw the yard sales with unused turntables and thought to my self, 'i need to get a decent one for the times to come'. So, i bought a near mint Thorens TD2001 for just the right price:-) They are still good value for the money. Later i switched the original tone arm for a new Jelco 750 and that was the best upgrade for this solid plinth turntable. It can compete with best for far less! I play records because they sound more life like (on a good system) than cd's. Thanks for the tour and personal insights of your vinyl journey!

You absolutely do not have too many turntables, like that could even be possible :). Like me, you obviously have an understanding wife :). I have a few myself. Goldring Lenco GL75, I use it for carbon fibre brush cleaning of records, rather than do it on the better decks. It has no suspension to speak of, and a 78rpm facility that is most useful when used for that purpose. Also have, in order of sonic preference. Alphason Sonata/HRS100mcs/AT-OC7 Michell Gyrodec/HRS100mcs/AT-OC7 Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference/SME3009/2/Ortofon 2M Black Roksan Xerxes/Linn Ekos/AT-OC7 AR Legend/Rega RB300/AT-F5 If I was in your position, I confess I would sell the lesser models and put the money toward a really good deck, arm and cartridge. No disrespect intended, but perhaps it is time, given your love of records, and music, to have less width, more quality? I sense you would appreciate the difference. I enjoyed looking at your collection, a few bought back memories ;). Stay safe analogue bro. ;)

I have a vintage Sansui turntable that I put a new belt on, but now it plays just a tad bit too fast. Not really a problem, but when I want to play guitar along with the song I have to tune a little differently. How long does it normally take for a new belt to stretch out so that it will play more accurately?

Not the belt. Check the manual. (Likely available to download) and find where the fine speed adjustment screws are, and you should be able to fix that issue.

Must have it now even if my old Thorens TD-160 baught new MANY years ago. And my 3 new turntables and my "new" Lenco L 75 I baught on the net because I was forced to sell my original to aford to by the Thorens MANY years ago. And as an retired engineer I could realize two other dreams my outh that I couldnt afford - one Revox A77 and one Revox B77. And I still miss my Sansui 555 that I sold to be able to buy my new Harman Kardon top Reciever 1979. Wy have I done that. Because the vintage gear are so beautyfull and the new blacks are so without any design soul. So thanks but now I must search the net for that designbeauty Philips turntable! So I cant talk no more hear.

Thanks for interesting videos that remind me of my own travel through the Hi-Fi world. Regarding your Philips GA312 record player; it has auto stop, but no arm lift. For the player to actually stop at the end of a record it depends on interaction with the bulbs that light up the touch buttons. If they have been changed (I see a red light for 33 speed where I expected it to be green) that can affect the automatic stop. Nice collection though, enjoy it and keep making videos! Best regards from Johnny in Spain.

The Shure v15 was the first really high end carts...I worked at a stereo warehouse back in 71 and we sold Dual TTs,Garrad,Empire's were the really high end then.When I bought that Technics sl 1300,it was like 2 weeks paid.I had bought a Sony str 7065 John Lennon had the one ,girl them at Crazy Eddie's $350 and used Bose 901s.The Bose were fair traded $575 stands extra. but I got them with the stands and a higher wooden base for like $315 a steal. So I had something nobody but the wealth had a ,$1,000 stereo system...I could have gotten the jbl 100s but they were 500 so the Bose were cheaper. Oh well .I was 22 with a system like that.
