DW thanks for the tip on checking the exhaust valve on the Tecumseh engine. B&S uses the intake valve. So I was having classic symptoms of a failed mechanical compression release. I could not see the little bump on the exhaust side of a 13.5 HP engine. But when I carefully felt the push rod I could feel it move ever so slightly. So I checked my valve clearances Both intake and exhaust were loose. I found an 80 page online real Tecumseh manual (that I down loaded) which said both valves were set at it at .004. After resetting the values I could see it the exhaust valve bump. I put the plug back in and it fired right up. I had never seen your channel until this week when I was trying to figure out why my starter was hanging up on the compression stroke. I had no knowledge of a mechanical compression release. It lead me down the right path. I was right on the cusp of pulling the motor when I felt that exhaust pushrod move leading me to check clearances and beating the odds of a broken MCR on the camshaft.

excellent video, seems this is a much more common occurrence than we believe it to be in my opinion. I Am retired now and feel the need to find and repair these kind of issues. I am not sure but i think i must have been some kind of a maintenance person or possibly a mechanic in a previous life . I Will be taking on this job alone next weekend, a 13.5 H. P. Tecumseh, it is the only possible solution, i will also do a valve job reseating the valves, i am sure after twenty years it needs it, but it is not the problem. When you think about what is going on in side an engine it is not far from an engineering marvel . These small engine companies designed these things to be tuff , i am positive that changing the oil every 50 - 60 hours of run time is the key to longevity

This was the first video I have seen on a compression release valve replaced and it was interesting to watch but, I am no skilled lawnmower mechanic and I would never try to do such a job but it seems you did an excellent job.

doublewide6, I, too, have run across the problem of a part being shown in a diagram but no part number being listed. Whenever this happens to me I find the Customer Service number and I call and speak with someone there. I have found that even though the person with whom I speak is not a mechanic and perhaps cannot immediately answer my question about the part number, he or she is normally pretty good about researching the information and getting me the answer I seek. Sometimes it takes a bit of time; however, if you really want the part, hey...what's a little time? I have even had the representative find the information later and send me an email when the information has been found. I just thought I would mention it as I truly appreciate your videos and the care with which you present your information. You have helped me more than I could ever tell you and I thank you for that. I hope you, your son, and the rest of your family are doing well. You all are in my prayers. I also put the Customer Service phone numbers in my contacts list to save having to find it again later.

Very detailed & informative video. I have a 1992 kohler command CV14hp that will not start. I have confirmed that i do have fire to the plug. I am getting fuel to the plug. My compression measured 120psi with a standard compression tester. I have sprayed a little carb cleaner in the intake just to rule out fuel supply & it would not start. Do you have any other suggestions that i could check?

I have a 2004 B&S 8 HP vertical shaft with both electric and pull start. It pull starts usually on the first or second yank. Have to admit, the oil has not been regularly changed. Very irregularly. Anyway, for about the last year when the engine shuts down it's a rough stop instead if smoothly coasting to a stop. No metal banging. Just sounds like there is still compression in the cylinder. Am I looking at the same issue you just addressed in this video? Or could it be just a valve adjustment? That has never been done. When it's running, it runs real well. Great pair of videos!

I have not dealt with the Tecumseh engine all that much on lawn tractors, but I have to say it is a well made engine especially compared to Brigg's Intek side by side. I also like the fact that you don't have to replace the entire cam like you do when Brigg's compression release fails.

OK, so this has compression release built in; good to know. How does that affect the compression readings I'd get on a gauge? Cranking compression is going to appear "low," right? IOW, the engine could have 120 psi at running speed, but 90 when it cranks?

I have just completed your 2 part set. I have a question for you. I really don't too much about a Murray tractor I own that I have had problems with. Q: when you start the engine, Does it matter where you set the the throttle, I have a turtle on one end and rabbit at the other end. Is there a position needed to engage the compression release? This tractor came with the house I live in and did not come with a book thank you for reading
@2Truth4Liberty
@2Truth4Liberty 5 жыл бұрын
The compression release is automatically engage at low rpm *like when starting* As soon as the engine fires up the compression release swings out of the way and is not used at al while the engine is running. (centrifugal force overcomes the spring tension that hold the compression release in place - i.e., so it sits on the exhaust cam lobe so it will hit the valve lifter)

Thanks for watching, happy to have you aboard. I just watched your loading and old start cold start of Mr. Moss. I'm thinking about putting a winch in the back of the truck, but not sure on how to attach it. Then I saw you hand winch and that looks promising and easy for loading tractors in the back of a pickup. I will search to see if you have a video on your winch install.

Nice work!! Obviously you have some substantial experience! This is a bit beyond my scope and range unless my life depended on it!! (LOL) Since I'm 70 years old it's hard to crawl under a motor and bent my neck so i can see where the mounting bolts go so I probably won't tackle a job like this myself. I have a Troy Bilt Super Bronco and I'm getting power to the starter but it acts like the compression is preventing it from turning over fast enough most of the time to start it but i usually can coax it into eventually starting. I'll will check the battery connection and starter solenoid tomorrow but not sure if this has a stupid compression release or not as it's just one more thing to break or fail. It might just need a valve adjustment too? Impressive Video!!!!! Where are you located? PS. the motor runs great when it starts.
@2Truth4Liberty
@2Truth4Liberty 5 жыл бұрын
A work around is to remove the air cleaner and place your hand or something like a piece of rubber inner tube over the intake of the carb while cranking. That creates some vacuum on the intake side which results in lower compression. After is starts, higher compression is not a problem. It's a bit of an art but if you have trouble getting this procedure to work, spray a little starting fluid into the carb then palm the intake as completely as you can. As soon as the engine start rotataing faster, remove your hand.

You actually did get lucky with the engine. An engine produces power a motor convert it, just saying fella. Well you are real lucky the gears did not get damaged from the metal and parts inside the pan or the crankcase bearings journals cracked from being spread from metallic compression of metal between the gears. Industrial supply should be able to get you any seal you need by size you tell them. You should of know when a so called mechanics sell a tractor he know there is a serous problems with the item. Interesting video to say the least. One more point to remember, the older engines where so well made that the new ones just cannot compare. Simplicity was there claim to fame. The new engines are just always in need of something. When the youngbloods get there hands on them watch out. You get the roll of the diec with outcome. Most of the time negative for sure. Good day and peace. VF
