Well done young man! Great check points and your reasoning and explanations make sense. I’m 71 yrs old now and lost a lot of my flexibility and length. I was a 7 handicap in my youth and could have been better, had I just been an average putter. Now I’m a 16 handicap. Have really been struggling with my irons the last 3-4 years. I truly believe this video you made will help me strike the ball cleaner! Many thanks!

Great tip!! This is exactly my issue. Overly flat backswing with driver club path usually around 6° in to out. Had a lesson two days ago and my instructor is working on getting me between 2-3° in to out so I can still easily hit my draw, but eliminating my occasional low, screaming hooks. Hands above trail heel is an excellent visual check! This plays right into my most recent lesson! Thanks!

Was watching this tutorial today and can't wait to get out to the range to try this out, was watching some of my own video lips and my arms are definitely guilty of this, lesdsrm pretty much horizontal to the ground. Have been working on getting rid of a nasty slice but I think that might have caused me to overcompensate and exaggerate the inside path. Excellent video, subscribed.

Thank you for the breakdown. That small detail of having the butt of the club on or just a little off the right heel is a perfect check point. As a player that has a lot of flexibility with my hip turn, my swing tends to maximize its hip rotation but also takes the swing off its natural path, that check point will manage the rotation and keep the end point of my back swing consistent. Can you add another segment for transition from end of the top of the swing to downswing? What is the best trigger to initiate the downswing?

Have this same issue and I've been working hard on correcting it (have around a 7-10 degree in to out swing with irons). A lot of it comes from an inside take-away, the natural transition is to take the club way back behind me from there. Have had to correct my take away and then get the feeling my trail arm is staying more "in front of my body" rather then getting under/behind me during the backswing - that is what I would suggest to people.

It's amazing how youtube is able to find videos that I need even with this video being over a year old. My son has this issue and I'm guessing a lot of junior golfers might have this because most don't have any meat on their chest. Their lead arm comes way across their chest just because there is more room to do so. My son has a severe 10 degree in to out club path. This just might be the fix!

This is exactly my problem. I wish I had watched this first... I started practising hitting down as I first saw your channel. Because I have been pushing my lead arm so much, after two weeks of hitting down practice my left shoulder really hurts (too much pulling at the back of the joint). I have also watched your other video about insufficient body extension during back swing. That was the reason why I didn't have enough room of body rotation, hence I had been pushing to achieve more up swing in the past year, hitting the ground and hooking all the time. Thanks for all the great videos I wish I had carefully watch all of them earlier, but it's been too late. Hope to get some face to face lessons with you next time I visit Singapore. Any plan to be in Hong Kong?

Thanks Jonathan, this is my biggest problem, but rather than come from the inside, I reroute over the top. All In all, I make it work (6.3 index), but it’s definitely holding me back from getting any better. My biggest problem is when I try to drill to keep the arm along the line of the alignment stick, I tend to feel totally disconnected (almost like there is a huge gap between my bicep and chest). That feels weak and wrong. Ive seen a ton of pros, and none have helped me correct it. Are you up for the challenge? Happy to try your online lessons out. What do you think?

This is my issue. Too much depth caused by flat shoulder turn, not enough tilt, and hands too inside. Then I straighten up and early extend, but still come down and from the inside, after losing my lag. Blocks, hooks, and low point control suffer. I had too much knee flex at set up that was promoting depth. I just started working on fixing my set up and takeaway. Did you get this fixed? How?

It's like you just saw my swing. This is my big fault and I have worked at it. However, when I get into the better position, I hit nothing but pulls or pull draws as I my hands and club feel so "out" and near the ball line. From this new and alien position, what is the new matchup I need for the downswing? I haven't seen any video on this fault before, great topic thanks!

Great vid thanks. Hugely helpful as I definitely know I do this to some degree (whereas most vids I couldn't tell you if that's a fault of mine). I swing right handed although I'm very left hand dominant, so my left arm wants to load to provide all the power. So I usually inadvertently then overcorrect this error as soon as I start my downswing and my miss is low and left (by somehow even from this low starting position coming over the top)

Excessive lead arm adduction is typically caused by an arm-sy swing and a failure to lift the arms and rotate the thorax simultaneously.

I lost my swing badly over the last 6 months or so of intermittent fall/winter play. Just beginning to get it back on track. However, I'm lacking power somehow. If I hit a good shot with, say, an 8 iron it makes good contact, sounds crisp and great, takes off nice and high but I struggle to get to 120 yards. With an 8! I'm 45 years old, in good shape, lift weights regularly so I'm fairly strong. I know it's difficult/impossible to diagnose without seeing my swing but wondering if there's any "obvious" ideas out there, if anyone else has had this problem. All my shots coming up way short even if I make great contact.

for a right-handed golfer, at the top of your backswing...imagine your left hand has to grab something out of your right pocket. Feel like your hands are moving straight down to touch your right pocket. let me know if that helps fight against some of your out to in path! Doing this and making sure I don't let my right shoulder sneak forwards has helped for me.

This video seems slightly inconsistent with the half swing video. In that one, it is recommended that the hands are over the back pocket at the halfway back point and the left arm slightly inside parallel whereas in this one, the hands are recommended to be in front of the chest and the left arm more parallel. Any reason for this difference Jonathan?

try and keep your head looking at the back of the ball as you hit it. This will prevent you from coming in too steep. And move the ball up to your front heel. Try and finish with that Tour-like pose (slight side bend)
