After playing several tournaments this year, I noticed my ball striking was deteriorating and I couldn't figure out why. Turns out I started getting steeper and steeper as the season has progressed and I believe the poor striking and compression can be attributed to a more upright backswing. I started messing with exaggerating the flat swing feel and immediately I had great compression and gained back 12-15 yards of distance I had lost. I guess what I accidentally discovered is an upright backswing may contribute to a glancing blow or what some people call wiping across the ball. I think this video is spot on though with the statement regarding larger-chested people struggling to shallow the club. I'm a 6'4", 265 pound male that does a lot of gym work and a shallow/flatter swing definitely gives me much better ball striking and the ability to rotate much more. Thanks for the inciteful video.

I appreciate the comparisons here, not the "do this, not that" so many others do. I've gotten into "over the top" habits, so I will watch for that. To me, its easier to swing short clubs and hybrids from upright, and long clubs/driver, flatter.

Thanks so much for this video! In the hundreds of golf videos I have watched, this is the first video to address the fact that someone who is tall and has long arms should approach their swing differently than someone who is wider/shorter and has shorter arms. I am 6'1" with long arms, so sometimes when I watch videos of someone swinging who is 5'7" with short arms, it just looks like something that doesn't fit my body type (especially watching someone who is 5'7" hit a driver with ease). Your simple explanation of how the upright backswing is a natural fit for the taller golfer with longer arms just makes perfect sense. Thinking about it, my flatter backswing probably helps explain why I struggle to return the clubface square when hitting my driver. With an upright backswing, if I square the clubface at the top of the backswing, this should help my body to naturally return it square to the ball at impact. Instead, my flatter backswing leads me to "trap" my right arm and struggle to fully turn and return the clubface in a square position.

I’ve been having some real issues with slices and hooks (low point too far behind also) recently and so I videoed myself only to find that my lead arm is wrapping around my body and my arm is actually slightly under shoulder plane at the top from DTL! Adam, I’m sorry but I believe bigger barrel chest folks need to get upright. Just as myself, thick chest wide shoulders, I need my arms up to get length in my swing and drop it down to the slot just fine. A flat swing is WAY too restrictive. Thinner, smaller narrow shoulders can swing flat much much easier. So I believe the opposite is absolutely necessary for the body types.
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 3 жыл бұрын
Jason, It’s fine if that works for you, most people aren’t able to drop it back in without excessive tilt away from the target. All the best, Adam

I'm 59, 5'4" , and my body weight has changed 3 times since age 5, in junior golf I was 125 pounds, hit a fade and won many trophies, then in the 90's, I was 215pounds, clubs got too long,and struggled with hooks, still managed a 4 handicap being a poor putter, now I'm 145 pounds, and now can swing more upright, went to midsize grips, shorter length clubs, but must learn to hit a fade again. Also to swing out to in, this will bring back the fade I prefer. But ball position may have to change as well, playing many years with the ball back in your stance produces low draws, great for wind,and hard pan you get in the Houston area, but with all that knowledge, I will be back to the drawing board to execute this, to do this I'll have to hit 500 balls a day until I get back where I belong.

Dear Adam, I've been struggling with an over the top swing for years, quite often resulting in slices and my clubhead burying itself into the ground. But this season, my first time back at the driving range, I had the simple idea to open up the club face at address and keep this feel through the back swing. It was a total breakthrough, because my swing arc totally flattens out this way. Have you ever tried this with a student and do you think this could be a good way to flatten someone's swing? Thanks so much. Ron

Really excellent, Adam, congratulations! Question: for the flat backswingers, what should be the average shoulder tilt approximately? Your arms had about 44 degrees and your shoulder approximately 35 degrees. Is this a good measure?
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bernhard. I don't really think of it in those terms (the numbers would change according to the height of the player, and their posture), rather if you have good posture your shoulders would turn perpendicular to your spine, and your left arm would be across your shoulder plane, or a little underneath it. I hope this helps. All the best, Adam

Very timely. I am 6-7, long, lanky but pretty strong. Played college basketball. I have been fighting a fade and/or a push recently. Went to the range, got a large bucket, and tried different set ups and swing angles. Near upright was spot on. I lost a small bit of distance but the accuracy was repeatable and I hit a draw. To swing flat I need to put the ball further away … but I come over the top because I reach for the ball by casting. If I crowd the ball I have to go vertical, and because there is no extra space, I have to go in to out. Crazy game.

Hi Adam, how much of the upright vs flat backswing is truly semantics? Obviously you can be too flat and too steep, but without an accepted definition of each is it a generally wasteful discussion? I think it would be worth defining what too flat and too steep are before golfers (like myself) try to convince themselves that their too flat or upright isn’t problematic. I personally believe I’m too flat which helps my arms get behind me to crossplane without breaking down my lead arm or leg, but can’t really find a way to say whether that’s true or false.
@Scratchgolfacademy

JB, There are certainly flat and upright backswings. While definitions may vary, generally leading arm across shoulder plane is about neutral, below that flat, above it upright Best, Adam

Doesn’t an upright backswing hinder you in creating a shallow downswing?
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 3 жыл бұрын
It does require more of a shallowing in the downswing. Many people find this difficult, but it is powerful. Best, Adam

The flatter you swing the more right to left the ball will go and the more upright the more left to right. It’s why majority of people slice and hook the ball

Not necessarily, it depends what you do in the downswing (Watson upright hit draw, Hogan flat hit fade) Thanks just the same

I wonder if having long or short limbs also affects your swing shape. I think most top golfers have longer than average arms. Can people with short arms and little flexibility also have a great golf swing? I know my swing is far too flat.
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 6 ай бұрын
I’d say shorter arm length would generally lead to a flatter look, but especially a wider shorter arm swing (as viewed face on). Longer limbed usually more arm swing and a little more upright. Neither excludes swinging well. Best, Adam

I've always found that the more upright your backswing is without opening the face and holding the club and all that you probably can hit it farther than a flat backswing. A flatter backswing requires really good rotation and fast hips,a more upright swing will help with someone who can't rotate as fast

In my mind I want to be more flat because I have a natural over the top swing and I've tried to remedy that by trying to be more flat, however my body just doesn't want to cooperate with that. So I've let the more upright/neutral happen and I'm just working on transition to drop it more in the slot.

So when they say 2 plane golf swing that's upright? And a flat swing is one plane since the arms are consistent with the spine angle ? I think everyone should learn the flat swing to start off with since it's easier to co-ordinate. Did Faldo not swap from flat to upright under leadbetter all those years ago?
@Scratchgolfacademy

Thanks. Yes, Faldo went from pretty upright to neutral/flat. All the best, Adam

ok you are wrong...the hands on Matt are below his shoulder at the top, Freddy above...really you should be right on it to be "square" BTW only way to scratch is by putting, not hitting

I would argue from a teaching perspective, that for the 85% of golfers out there, who are slicers, they should absolutely practice the Matt Wolff Upright to Dropping Looping type backswing, and NOT the Matt Kuchar Flat swing, because almost all of them already do the Reverse Matt Wolff swing, starting where Matt Kuchar starts, and then go out over the top. I've always been amazed at Kuchar's swing as I have no idea how he comfortably gets his hands into that position - my body doesn't work that way.

I disagree sir. The upright backswing like Mathew wolf is great for slicers , it’s nearly impossible to come over the top if your backswing swing is high and outside. It naturally forces the club to come to the inside on the through swing , similar to Jim Furyk.

We’ll just have to disagree then Martin. I have taught golf full time for over 30 years, so I’ve seen a lot of swings and how people generally react. No worries Best, Adam
