Great video. I went to my local BMW Motorrad dealership and was looking at the 1300GS since I was thinking the 1250GSA was going to be tall at my 5'9" height. The sales person at Cape Fear BMW in Wilmington North Carolina USA showed me these yesterday. I was so happy to see this bike actually felt lighter with a full tank of fuel than my Royal Enfield Himalayan. I was looking at the kickstand and it was perfect. I climb on like you. Turn bars to the right and climb on.

100% agree with you on the low chassis, having picked one up on New Year's Eve. I'm also 5'9" with 30" inseam and after test rides on the standard height GS and the RS I was all ready to go for the RS as I felt much more comfortable with the seat height. Hadn't even considered an Adventure as I couldn't even get my leg over it however after sitting on the low chassis GS and low chassis Adventure at Motorcycle live in December I actually felt more comfortable on the Adventure for some reason. Another thing that initially put me off was the width of the 30l fuel tank. However I saw a youtuber saying that it's purely psychological as the bars and the cylinder heads are still the widest parts of the bike and once you're riding you don't really see the tank. 600 miles in and I'm loving the bike.

What a great story! Glad you’re enjoying it and what a brilliant way to round off a year 👍🏻 If you put panniers on they become the new widest part…and you can’t see them while riding! Somehow the brain sorts it all out though. I’ve got a luggage video and Klim jacket review coming soon. Stay tuned!

I bought my first ever GS (1250 Exclusive) in 2019 and i found i was on tiptoe with the standard set-up. But i got some good advice from the dealer. Being "vertically challenged" at 5.6 with a 29" inside leg he showed me how to lower the suspension via the TFT and changing out the rubber seat bungs for a lower version from NN would help. It made a lot of difference as i could now get 3/4 of my foot on the ground. You still have to be careful with cambers and potholes when you stop but i feel a lot more secure now. PS, get boots with a thick sole and you're sorted.

Low seat with normal springs will do the trick. Once you are lowering the chassis, you pay a price in Ground Clearance and cornering. You need to calculate the sag as well. Anyway, one foot on the ground is more than enough.

I am 68 and 5’7 and own a 1250 GS with low chasis. I use it with a low seat for the street and a super low seat off-road. Occasionally, I still wish I was one or two inches taller, but I enjoy the bike immensely. Since a couple of years ago, whenever I drop the bike, I ask for help picking it up (my back is not what it used to be).

@@a2bwithlee With the right (knobby) tires, the bike is suprisingly capable and even comfortable offroad. Unless you are an expert, stay away from single track (too heavy to turn around), deep mud, and technical terrain. If you lower the seat too, you will probably want to pay SW Motech a visit and buy a set of lowered pegs. DO NOT buy this bike thinking you are going to go single track or moderately difficult trails. It is a very comfortable touring bike for gravel or lite sand. with the same height, people have different distances from the ground to the groin (inner seam length). Therefore, it is correct and better to talk about this - for understanding. There is also information about the saddle height in your case. The standard seat for the lowered version has a height 860/840mm. The heated seat for the lowered version has a height 870/850mm. Lowered seat 840/820mm.

Useful video. Thanks.Comments from me are as an RT rider. I had same leg safety issue as you when I tried a gs/gsa. As I don’t go off road I bought an RT and ride it fine on it’s low seat position- it comes with this as standard. You don’t mention the cost of the low suspension option you ordered. I guess it’s not cheap! If like me you tour and want bags the RT comes with these andoverall becomes a cheaper bike to buy than a GS . It also comes with heated seat , central locking etc so a better deal all round plus fantastic weather protection. RT handles and rides brilliantly too so I am glad I opted for one as I almost felt I must go for a GS just because it looks a bit macho and is so popular. I know looks are subjective and I am not knocking the GS just saying it’s worth seriously considering the RT . It also goes down basic gravel tracks ok.
@a2bwithlee
@a2bwithlee 2 жыл бұрын
John thanks for the comment. You make some very good points there. The low chassis option was approximately £200($250). Motorcycles are definitely a subjective thing. I think many of us buy with our hearts more than our heads. And that’s ok. They’re fun! RT or GS…you get a great bike either way 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

i'm 5' 6" and have had a lifetime riding bikes that were 'ostensibly' to tall (laverda jota being one) ... In my experience, you just get used to it. Off roading taught me only ever to put one foot down-I can always flat foot one side. I am on my 3rd gen of GS- now owning a gs 1250. You get used to looking ahead for stopping problems, like dips in the road etc...Anyway totally agree with the rest of your assessment- counterintuitively - the easiest bike in the world to ride!

Inseam is more important, as a proportion of the height. I’m 5ft 9, with a. 32 inch inseam. I used to have a Dr650 with a similar seat height to the R1250 Adventure, and could still prop it up on off camber roads. Sitting on a GS Adv, the slimness of the front of the saddle is very similar, and the taper of the big 25l tank I fitted to the DR is also similar to the taper on the GS. I currently have a KTM 390 Adv and the lift of my heels is very similar to the GS Adv.

@johnbucher2077 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertreidmd I'm 6-1 and I chose the 1250GS with low suspension because I ride on dirt infrequently and even then only on trails that are in fair condition and my "low" GS still gives me plenty of ground clearance. And besides, if I was going to do a lot of off road riding I would get the GSA or a KTM. Otherwise I'll take the lower center of gravity, lower angular momentum and better riding comfort of the "low" GS which is still more than two inches higher than any bike I've ever owned. BTW, I do have my seat in the high position for added leg comfort on long rides. So for me it's a win-win with this bike. I think BMW should make the GS with "low" suspension as the standard and offer the higher suspension for those who actually need it. It's a marketing mistake for BMW not to differentiate these bikes more right from the start.

I recently sold my 2019 BMW F 850 GSA... this after several long (6,000 miles) rides... I just got tired of such a top heavy motorcycle for my 5'6" chassis... I bought a bike that was too tall for me. No amount of switching the suspension to road (to get it lower than in Dynamic mode) help when the terrain was uneven and I had to come to a stop. Luckily, for those oh-shi** moments, there were friends around that helped me avoid dropping the bike. But I had enough... to the point it was no longer fun for me to ride it. So I sold it to a much taller rider. The pity is that it was amazing for long trips. My friends ride Honda Gold Wings DCTs and I could out run them, out range them and I was the guy that had everything needed in my magical Mary Poppins hard panniers. Now I am looking at alternatives. Much smaller and lighter bikes...to the tune of a Royal Enfield Himalayan or a KTM 390 Adventure... The issue with those bikes is that there is no way they will keep pace with Gold Wings... and this is a bike that I want for long rides with my friends and the occasional forest trail or light off-road path when I am riding solo. In the KTM forum someone just suggested that take a look at the 1250 GS Adventure with a factory lower suspension and lowered seat option... First of all, it will be hilarious if I arrive home with what the wife would think is the same bike I recently sold. I even gave the new owner the GPS and the GS-911 diagnostic tool.. but anyway... The question that I have: Is this bike still top heavy?? Or is the center of gravity low enough for a short rider to feel like I will not be having that feeling that I will drop it if it leans to much on an uneven terrain?? This is my main concern. I do not want to have that feeling that I had on my 850 GSA ever again... hated it...

As far I understood, there are 3 areas of the GSA which can be configured/adjusted to lower the seat ht: 1. low suspension (which was talked about in your video) - a factory option 2. under the seat, there is a piece of metallic support which can be flip around to set it to Low/High to further lower the seat 3. when the bike is started up, in the MENU, there's a suspension setting (AUTO/MIN/MAX), which can set to MIN Have you tried all these three together? Is the bike still functioning as it should when all these 3 are set?

I'd be interested to know what your bike has? when you add the heated seat option on the configurator its appears considerably higher on the overview pic. I've been unable to get a definitive answer. @@a2bwithlee , sorry that I did not get right back with you. Most definitely, I like this accessory. I have ordered almost every accessory that Touratech offers since. If I had a new bike the larger pad side stand foot would be the first that I would order. Incidentally, I have found Touratech to be expensive, but all the accessories are relatively easy to install and fun to install. Very high quality and fit perfect. I had to return an extended front fender because it would interfere with by Big Dog oil pan protection and Touratech was most accommodating.

Hi, I'm 6' 1'' tall. Bought a factory lowered Rallye second hand. How good is it to be able to plant my feet when I'm in trouble. I had a regular GSA and again it was rideable. I have much more confidence in the bush in the lowered bike. Thanks Greg from Australia

Hi Lee having watched your vid i picked up that the short suspension is on the gsa model is this correct and is it on any other model as no one explains this in any detail, as i was looking at buying a 2022 gs and have the local BMW dealers lower it or have i got it wrong when people talk about factory lowered suspension there is a certain model i should buy. thanks for any help before i make a purchase R

Hi Russell. The current GS range has various ride height options. One is a factory option called low chassis. This is what I have. It is not a dealer fit. The other is a low seat on standard suspension. I highly recommend test riding first.

Good vid.... thanks. I'm 5'8" x 30. And scary tip toes on the GSA and barely balls of my feet on the GS just sitting in the showroom (they didn't have any demo bikes). I really want the GSA over the GS (love that gas) but I've heard the lowered suspension hurts the ride and handling. You seem to like the handling on road surfaces, so you cleared that up for me. Do you have any experience off road yet, or do you intend to have off road trips. I'm wondering how the shorter suspension handles big bumps. If love to hear from anyone who has taken a low rider off road. That's the only concern I have left about ordering a low GSA. THANKS

Hi Fred. Thanks for watching. You’re correct I love the road handling. That chassis with the semi active suspension is incredible. I haven’t taken it off road yet. I’m sure like most things it’s relative to what you’re used to. The standard GSA having 2 inches extra suspension travel must surely handle large rocks better. That said, How many GS riders regularly hit stuff that’s close to bottoming out the suspension?

Is there any downsides to having a lowered gs on the bitumen compared to standard? Also, when selecting low compared to auto on the electronic suspension, what does that do to road riding, I haven't been able to work it out?

Hi. I didn’t notice any difference between either model on the road. Theoretically the lower bike should be better on road: lower centre of gravity etc. I haven’t ridden in the low suspension mode as Auto is just so damn good.

Confidence and experience trump a lowered chassis. I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam. I ride a standard GS Adventure. The only "modification" is the seat is on the "Low" setting. Far from flat-footing it. The GS is an adventure bike. It's supposed to ride higher. Learn to ride the model, not dilute it. Ready for the haters. Bring it on, lightweights.

Hi Stoic. Excellent triggering skills 🤣 When I watch someone like Jocelin Snow (5’1) I often think I’ve made a mistake. However, back in the real world, I’m not an ADV expert. Motorcycles and their riders are strange things…all individuals with completely different needs and skills. For me, first time ADV rider, this time the low made more sense. Who knows next? Appreciate the input.
