Me also. This song has brought me out of the darkness on more than one occasion. Something as simple as realizing that you are not the only one that feels that way. I got Metallica tatooed on my arm when I was 16 yrs old. I am 49 now. So thankful that I was able to live through that period. There was nothing like going to get their albums the day they were released. It was magical!

I saw an interview with James one time where he was saying that right after this album came out. He went over to this girls house that he didn't know very well and her sister kept playing this song over and over. Neither one of them knew that it was James who sang the song. The girls sister kept saying with tears in her eyes " This song means something to this person. " He never told them it was him.

This masterpiece dropped in 1984. Written by an emotionally distraught 20/21 year old, who had gone through hell. The loss of his mother, their equipment being stolen. So he sits down and writes this absolute gem. A song that almost 40 years later resonates with 10s of millions on the same frequency. Different reasons why, but still a shared energy. I was 16 or so the first time I heard it. And I was just blown away. 28 years later, I still feel the same way about it. The emotion. The energy. The musicality. A thrash metal band writing one of the greatest songs in music history, and it's set to this tempo. It was brave. ....It was necessary.

Something I love about this song is that the cause of the depression is never stated. Usually it's a breakup, or a death, but in Fade to Black it's left unmentioned. This really just allows everyone to connect to the song no-matter the situation as the causation is different but the emotions that ensue are shared. This just allows people like me to relate to it even more.

MAN - I'm a long-time Metalica fan (even saw them open for Ozzy back in the day!), and I used to hear Fade To Black every day. I was working in Camden, NJ in 1986 fixing up houses to sell and a radio station in Philly used to play it several times every day. Fast forward to 2013 when I was handed a 2-to-5-year death sentence, no thanks to ALS (AKA Lou Gehrig's disease). Here I am, 10 years later, and I hadn't heard this song in like 15 years, not knowing how important and poignant it would be to me later in life. Thanks to the legalization of cannabis, my progression has slowed to the point my neurologist says I'm "stabilized." Now, there comes a time for everyone with this horrific affliction where the only nerves left functioning are the eyes - a condition known as being "locked in." (All the while, the patient is acutely aware of what's happening because ALS only attacks the distant motor neurons, but not the eyes). I'm not sure what the future holds...I may need to turn it all off at some point, but my current train of thoughts insist that, even in the face of such palpable horror, never EVER give up on hope.

My number one, all-time favorite song by Metallica. This is the first song of theirs I ever listened to, and it literally saved my life. I was a teen, lost and spiraling into a hole I saw no way out of. Hearing this song let me know I wasn't alone and gave me something to cling to. I'm finally getting to see them live in November, and I can't wait. I still struggle, and when the demons are too loud for me to hear anything else, I play this song (as well as others that I've found over the years that resonate in my soul) and it helps me remember how far I've come and that I'm not alone. Very well said. This song is genius and the reactions to it in the 80's and early 90's was so stupid, this isn't a song about death it's quite the opposite. The lyrics are dark but the musicianship and they way the song is structured is very insipiring and uplifting. Like a warm glove that surruonds you in the darkness, just holding on for one more day. Feelings dont last forever, just hang on. I'm your age and while I didnt get Metallica into my late teens (And Metallica hardly heard or seen in Australia until Justice for All) this song and Ride the Lightening always makes me somehow feel glad to be alive. I can imagine living in a world without this music and how glum and unsatisifying life would be. I hope your finding ways to cope to mental illness, it's been a battle most of my life, a battle I'm finding easier to fight as I'm in my 50's.

I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada... which according to the rest of Canada and the world might as well be Australia. They all think Canada ends in Montreal... LoL!!! Speaking of Montreal, I got to see Metallica Aug 11 and 13th and another great band on the 12th, The Warning. What a weekend!!! Yeah getting older sure does help, knowing that "It's not the end of the world" and to just give "It" time really helps. I still deal with depression but it's not as "dire" as it was because I know how it works and it won't last and those thoughts of doom and gloom are a thing of the past. I think it is so beautiful. The darkness and hardness combined with the beautiful, melodic softness. I’ve been listening to it for decades and it never gets old. This song is about James getting his Marshall amp stolen that his mom bought for him. His dad left and his mom died of cancer. She refused treatment. That amp was one of the last thing he had of her. I saw I’m in Arlington a couple of weeks ago. Yes they played this. 🤘

James wrote it after all their gear was stolen, including the amp his mother gave him before dying from cancer when James was still a teenager. If you don't mind a recommendation, I would love to see you give Alice In Chains a reaction. They were going to tour together but Layne (front man) was in no condition to tour so it was called off. Alice in Chains are a phenomenal band with some amazing music. Fun fact they had the first ever EP to debut at number one on the Billboard charts and that EP was written and recorded in a week. A good introductory song for them is Would. The music video works since it'll help you to distinguish between Jerry and Layne singing. Those harmonies are simply beautiful.

I ended up here on your channel because I was having a panic attack and thought watching people enjoy life would pick me up out of this depressive state. Don’t worry everyone my will to live is strong and in no way would ever injure myself. Your take on this song is perfect, the voice in your head can bring hard and confusing thoughts but when the solos kick in, that is the way out of the dark place. It is showcasing passion, creativity, technical ability. As the solos get progressively more technical we get closer to overcoming the lyricist and the song ends with the solo fading out, leaving the impression that the darkness was overcome

Growing up in RI one radio station played heavy metal and that was 94HJY the home of Rock & Roll. Metal was late and hosted by a very big Metallica fan from the beginning Mike “The Doctor Gonsalves” How are Ya! who we lost in The Station in club fire. He brought Metallica to the masses of Rhode Island, Mass and Connecticut in the 80’s. I thank my blessings for him or I would have missed out big time.

This is such a masterful song. Composition and lyrical content are just off the charts. It pulls at the heart strings. People back in the day tried to censor the song saying it would encourage s*I cide when in fact it did the total opposite for many others including myself. Art is meant to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. I just want to say to everyone that it will one day get better. It pains me greatly to think of what I almost threw away to try and escape from my trauma. I have a whole lifetime ahead of me and I feel blessed to live it. You got this and I’m rooting for you!

Reading a lot about how this song saved lives, and i can't relate since when this song came i wasn't even born, and when i first hear metallica at the age of 6 was around the black album at 94. Growing up i love the entire album and this song specially even when i didn't knew the meaning behind it (english not my first language). Now as an old man, even when some people can find this song sad or depressing for the lyrics, i feel it liberating. A song that can portrait the pain and agony that can take over your whole self in such a beautiful way is just amazing, more with the fact that hear a song about someone that can feel like that doesn't make you feel alone in this world. This is such a beautiful song and you had a very good reaction to it man, love it.

Hi, this is the first time I've seen your videos. Thank you for your support, this song became very important to me, I have heard it years ago, but a while ago its meaning became my reality, before I was a young boxer with a life, then everything went to hell, I fell into a very strong depression, my body changed oneathletic to one who is very overweight. I was left alone. one night after work, I was reaching a very dark point and crying I thought about ending everything once and for all, the playlist put this song on I listened to it while I cried, and I thought that I didn't want to end up like this, being a shadow of what I once was. I still have depression, but... I decided that I have to go back, to everyone who read me at this time, guys, look for help, look for something to hold on to and keep fighting.

When I feel down and listen to this song, the verses can tell more or less how I feel and that's empathy. When the solos come afterwards, as you said, I also feel a lot of push back. And in the final solo I feel like I'm free from my pain. Such a great sense of release. Thanks for your review. It helped me explain some unknown feelings. 💯

Sir, you are so correct! I am 54 yrs old n life long Metallica fan, first heard them on Metal Massacre comp album. When Fade to Black came out, I was what 17ish n it said my life, I wanted to just check out. Listening to gave me hope, you just lost n the beautiful melody at the end n calms you down. It got a bad rap in the media that it was causing suicide n couldn't be farther from the truth, saved alot of us! N I Love that James uses it at shows to let people they are not alone, WE ARE THE METALLICA FAMILY!

Metallica is a great band. There was a marked maturation from Kill ‘em All to Ride the Lightning. Kill ‘em All is a very good album with some fantastic songs, but they’re mostly similar tempo and Kirk’s solos have some similarities. Each successive album to And Justice for all increased their complexities of songwriting - riffs, melodies and lyrics.

One of their best, and it’s on their second album. And yes, it has helped lots of people express thoughts they had that they never acted upon, because the song makes us feel less alone in our despair. Even if the message is of darkness and pain and loss, and a lot of James Hetfield’s lyrics are, they give us a way to get that energy out. Doesn’t help to have some of the greatest solos Kirk Hammet has ever played on the song too, there’s a reason Hetfield calls him The Ripper. If you want similar tracks lyrically from them, “Bleeding Me” or the trio of “Unforgiven” songs would be good to see you listen to. If you prefer a more up song or two, “Fuel” can get you pumped, “Nothing Else Matters” can make you feel connected, and “Atlas Rise!” is good to shout along to.
