The Soviet Union collapsed in December 26, 1991 Metallica played there September of 1991, in the final days of the Soviet Union. The American rock band Metallica gave a concert in a country that would soon cease to exist. The show was part of the 'Monsters of Rock' festival, which also brought together groups such as AC/DC and Pantera.

The choppers were for security purposes, but also to help circulate air so the people in the center core of the venue didnt pass out. Legend has it that Moscow registered a .03 on the Richter Scale during this concert. Probably a mix of music and 1 million headbangers jumping around. Basically us humans created an earthquake (or at least a tremor).

Another thing that’s really amazing is that there are quite a few soldiers… there as crowd control… that have stripped off their uniforms and are rocking out with the crowd. Absolutely ASTONISHING show. Everything about it is breathtaking. It’s crazy how Hetfield (singer) is just standing up there like he owns the whole world. Not one outward sign of nervousness, not one quiver in his voice, nothin. Super calm and confident. And he’s only 28 years old at the time. Insane. Absolutely insane. I can only imagine what it must’ve been like for those people to see American rockstars in the flesh for the first time. They sure as hell earned it. Wow. I’ve been listening to Metallica since the early 80’s… since back when they were still considered a “local band”… lmao… and I get chills every time I see this video. Truly awe inspiring.

Back when concerts were everything! This was huge because it was around the fall of the Berlin wall. I recall it like yesterday. 1.6 million people and not a single cell phone existed. 1.6 million people looking at the same thing, Sharing the same experience. Life was great.

I saw Metallica live in 1999. It was awesome! Best concert I’ve ever been to. My husband was annoyed, we were on the floor in the pit and I’m a small woman. I kept getting pushed, and he was about to lose it. I enjoyed every minute of it. 😂

I've seen and been in quite a few pits where people would go down and the pit would stop to help them up. Once it there was this girl that went down and this huge dude just stopped put his arms out to hold others back so she could get up .

Bud…I am so pumped you took my suggestion and watched this concert. It was truly a remarkable show. Watching you discover the band and feeling the things I felt when I first discovered them is awesome. So glad you’re going to check out the rest of their catalog. The late 80’s and early 90’s saw a big change in politics in Eastern Europe at the time. Between the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the collapse of the Soviet Union in Dec 1991, communism is those countries was coming to an end. To have a festival like this was such a release for people. I don’t care what drug you take…there is NO HIGH like walking on to a stage in front of one million people and playing your ass off. Looking forward to more content bud.

I was at an NHL playoff game where my home team could have won the cup, which they eventually did (Carolina Hurricanes). The electricity of just that small number of people in that stadium is something I'll never forget. The stadium was shaking with the roar of the crowd...insane!

It was like 3 weeks before the fall of the USSR. Mikhail Gorbachev had been opening up to doing business with the west. The monsters of rock concert brought people from all over to the free concert that held at a military base outside of Moscow. I'm not 100% sure but I heard that with around 1.6 million people it got to hot so the military flew helicopters low over the crowd to act like fans to cool the fans.....🙄

Another funny Metallica story. I got heavily into them in the mid 90s in college. The guy next to me was into Too Short, Ice Cube, etc. I loved rap as well. One night he was pumping Too Short bassy as hell at 2am; I couldn't sleep with paper thin dorm brick walls. So I cranked Metallica treble all the way up. Then we hung out in the hallway until we woke up half the dorm to complain. LOL.

It wasnt just metallica either. There were a number of bands that attended this concert. With the fall of the Berlin wall and the fall of the tyranical regime in the area more rock n roll and heavy metal bands were allowed into the country which were previously not. Thats a part of the big significance of this concert. It represented the peoples freedom and this was one of the ways they celebrated. Music has always had an impact on peoples hearts and often has had a deep message/lesson behind songs. The fact that these young and old soldiers could finally listen to the music they desired while tearing down a wall dividing their nation was a 2 for 1 special of outstanding proportions. Im sure there must have been some conflict going on somewhere in the crowd but if your dumb enough to start a fight in a crowd of that size after they just tore down a significant hinderance to their nation and spoil their freedom and this great reward... I wouldnt expect to get out of there alive. Especially when a bunch of them are military who just finished the cold war and ww2. You can be sure many of them were likely going through or starting to have ptsd from the war. They needed the break not more conflict.

In my mind they should be put on a ban list and never let back into one of the bands concerts they ruined. It was dumb of them to do something like that with so much law enforcement and military around. Half of them probably made a dumb choice after drinking or doing a bunch of drugs. back then who knows.

To understand what the world was like in the 60`s+70`s+80`s.. These people were actually smuggling in tapes of Rock music into the USSR to get to listen to it at all !! , so for the ones recognizing the songs + standing in the "the mosh pit" this was the moment of a life time!! ..and, Oh man ..I miss the concerts of the 80`s+90`s .. I saw Metallica in Stockholm, Sweden this year.. They were the sh.t back then.. !! Fun story.. My friend had been to the annual X-mas Dinner with his company before the show.. As a hard working guy starting his mornings really early, and With a little bit too much to drink, so he was asleep in his seat at row 4 close to the side of the stage when Metallica started to play approx. at 9pm.. ( Imagine the sound level.. lol ).. I can tell you , He woke up pretty fast .. We are still having a laugh about it today.. :D :D

The military guys shown in the crowd partying were not part of the security troops, in fact, the one wearing his jacket with the black patches was actually from the Armored Troops. The majority of the troops actually working security at this event were from the MVD 'Министерство внутренних дел', (like the guy with the cap with the maroon cap band) along with a smattering of Militia and KGB troops. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Soviet Union (MVD) was the interior ministry of Russia, responsible for law enforcement and internal security. It oversees several key agencies, including the Police of Russia, Migration Affairs, Drugs Control, Traffic Safety, the Centre for Combating Extremism, and the Investigative Department. Someone asked in one of these reviews what kind of drug these people were on, and I told him..."Freedom". This type of excitement was everywhere during this period, I remember one train trip form Budapest to Prague....sitting in second class with a compartment full of Czech soldiers drinking wine and jamming to a Scorpions tape in a boom box.

I watched them on this tour. Not this concert, but when Monsters of Rock came through Belgium. This was when the Soviet Union was about to collapse and this was one of the first times western bands were allowed to perform over the iron curtain. These people had only heard western music over pirated radio, so they let loose quite dramatically when they could actually see this show. I think like 30 people died at this event. You should watch their video of "Creeping Death" at this concert. That's pretty epic as well.

I got to see them live in Vancouver Canada. When they started, the arena was pitch black and quiet. “Blackened” started and the arena of 18000+ jumped to their feet. I’m a small town kid so was INSAnE to see lol

Yes, that is so true 1.6 million people attended if you will watch this same concert but the song Harvester of sorrow by Metallica live in Moscow you will see them actually beating up the concert goers

Doesn't matter what type of music you grew up with. I've never seen a person listen to Metallica that doesn't totally get the epic mastery by these guys. Love that you appreciated that sick solo.

Yes this was at the end of the Soviet Union few years earlier some rock bands played behind the iron Curtain in Poland & this was in Moscow at the end of the Soviet Union so you have to remember they were cut off from this Western Rock which is the ethnicity of freedom
