I honestly fell in love with MAMAMOO because of their early jazz / funk style. It was so rare to see in Kpop. About the only other big Kpop star that does this is JYP himself (which was why their collaboration at 2019 MAMA was spectacular), besides the smaller indie artists like Fluxus Music artists. In every generation of girl groups, there's always one senior girl group with powerful vocals that produces more mature 'womanly' music - the Brown Eyed Girls were that group for the 2nd Gen idols, and MAMAMOO is the iconic group for the 3rd generation girl groups. Not everyone may love them (they're likable, but not quite as lovable as say TWICE is), but everyone RESPECTS them. Seniors and juniors alike. How can you not, when they are THIS good at what they do?

Mamamoo can slay any genre of music. Basically, they begin with classical/retro type of music but as time goes by they are slowly adapting to a more pop genre. Yes, Mamamoo does all types of genre of music. They don't limit themselves. They first debuted doing jazz/blues/musical music then evolved to other music and concepts. They have the best concepts each era. These girls know how to tell a story.

Hip does have a story behind the song. The teasers to the song say one story and the actual song says another 😂 the teasers tell the story of the girls destined to meet and be together no matter what dimension they live in, hence the four dimensions shown at the end of the mv. As for the actual song, it was basically a diss to all their haters. They get hate for how they look and what they wear so in the song they’re basically saying “fuck you, we wear what we want because it’s who we are. You can keep talking all you want, we don’t care” but in a nice way lol.

Piano Man was my intro to MMM about 4 years ago and it's the song that kept me listening to kpop after checking out a few songs by the famous kpop groups at that time and thinking I was either too old for this stuff or that kpop really stands for kiddie pop. Mr Ambiguous and Piano Man are part of Mamamoo's early retro style, which they continue on the next MV called Ahh Oop, which is a collab with female singer/songwriter eSNA. Btw, you didn't watch the MVs for their pre-debut songs Don't Be Happy and Peppermint Chocolate, which also have a retro vibe. Around the time of Piano Man they also made the first of many appearances on the singing competition tv show Immortal Songs 2, which features many of S Korea's best singers and groups doing covers of "immortal songs" by legendary older artists. Mamamoo quickly developed a rep as the scary rookies nobody wanted to follow. Over the years they've performed on IS2 14 times and won 3 times. No other kpop idol group has multiple wins on Immortal Songs. Their performances on Immortal Songs really showcase their vocals and riveting stage presence and they almost represent a parallel career for Mamamoo as old school singers & performers along with their career as a kpop girl group. You might want to start mixing in an Immortal Songs reaction with each MV to really get a sense of their development as singers & artists. For me, after I watched the Piano Man MV and noticed all the comments by moomoos about Immortal Songs I watched their astounding, jaw-dropping performance of the old Tom Jones song Delilah on Immortal Songs and got religion moomoo style. 😂

The usual saying is Mamamoo consists of four vocals, four rappers, four dancers and four visuals; * They said they'd absolutely hate doing the same thing over and over; * All of them have very different musical tastes, and their voices shine in different scenarios. As a consequence, it is impossible to say Mamamoo has a genre. It is often said Mamamoo _is_ a genre. The one thing to warn you in advance, which might or might not be redundant: if a song exists on their channel (MAMAMOO), watch it there. Almost all songs there have subtitles, as opposed to some more popular channels; and subtitles are quite important for some of their songs (for example, a lot of people were utterly lost at Mr Ambiguous prank scene).

if you’re struggling to pronounce moonbyul, the ‘byul’ part is pronounced like ‘you’ll’ but with a ‘b’ sound at the start!
