Tula's Endless Summer

Tula's Endless Summer

7 жыл бұрын

We had a long day waking at 3am to time the currents correctly in the C&D Canal. We transited the canal quickly with a favorable tide and began our decent down the Delaware bay. As the bay widened and the ind increased we began getting bombarded by waves abeam. We abandoned our destination to Cape May to take cover in Lewes, DE.

When I worked for Clearwater Yacht Sales, we delivered new boats from the port of Miami, up to Stuart and across the Okeechobee to Clearwater. Once we were being chased by a tropical storm and crossing the Tampa Bay inlet had green water over the bow on a boat with nothing except paper charts and one radio. Fun times. Also did the Chesapeake Bay summers and sailed out of Naples, FL. You two are having the time of your life.

I always used to get gas at the docks at 5:51 in the c&d canal. years ago prior to my grandpop passing away we would go on a cruise every summer. we would start north In the delaware river near Florence Nj and cruise down the river to the c&d canal. go through it and that was where we would stop to top off the tanks. I had a 31' jersey cabin cruiser/fly bridge. when I was even younger I would go on this cruise on my grandpop and grandmoms boat. A 38ft custom wood yacht. the C&D canal is a beautiful cruise.

For AIS on the iPad use shipfinder, yup have a Free verstond of it, workshop ok in the Chesapeak bay, I just checked it on one of the ships I sailed on. She is in Baltimore at the moment. Also in the navigation app isailor there is the possibility the get the AIS info on the charts, a lot easier because you have all the info in one pic. There are also a lot of yachts who have AIS.

It is on an island to your left as you come out od the cd. It is called Fort Delaware . It has a very interesting history as it was pre cilvil war. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Delaware I have been cruising that area for over 40 years......lost of cool stuff to stop and see in that area. You might not have noticed but most of the upper bay is fresh water. Great to swim in. The actual top of the bay was 10 miles north east of turkey point lighthouse....another interesting visit . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_Point_Light.I boat out of Hances Point Yacht Club. If you ever plan to revisit, drop me a line. It is very likely that we could find an empty mooring to use. Very friendly crowd. Pretty likely someone could drive you to town for restocking, especially on the weekend. www.hancespointyachtclub.com/ By the way the upper bay is notorious for striped bass, with a Chesapeake bay license . Very restrictive as to what size and when you can catch them. North East is known for a couple places where you can feast on crabs.
