Theodore Roosevelt was born with a debilitating asthma. This caused Teddy to live a strenuous life, full of exercise and physical activity.
After finishing Harvard, Roosevelt started making a name for himself by openly fighting corruption in the state of New York. His work was cut short, however, when both his wife and his mother died on the same day.
Roosevelt went to live a cowboy’s life in the west for two years, before returning to New York, where he became the police commissioner.
After doing a successful job, he was promoted as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. During this period, Roosevelt used an explosion of a US ship in Havana to start a war with Spain in order to liberate Cuba. Despite the president’s wishes, Teddy gave out orders to prepare for a war which inevitably happened.
Roosevelt joined the forces and received the Medal of Honor for his famous charge up Kettle Hill. Afterwards, Teddy was appointed Vice President - a ceremonial role was given to him because of his political differences with the leaders of the Republican Party.
Roosevelt became the youngest president in the history of U.S., when the president William McKinley was assassinated.
As a president, Teddy had a hands-on approach. He issued more executive orders than any other president and was famous for opening five national parks and more than 200 national forests and animal reserves.
Teddy also wanted to connect Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and he achieved this by digging the Panama Canal, something which France tried before and failed.
He also stopped the Russo-Japanese War, for which he was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize.
After William Howard Taft succeeded him, Teddy went on an African safari trip where he killed over 10,000 animals. When he returned, he ran again for president and survived an assassination attempt during one of his campaign speeches.
At the age of 60, Theodore Roosevelt died in his sleep.
