I think you're mistaken about him coming to terms with god, or starting to believe. Near the end of the song he sings: "Should you see your maker's face tonight". Not "the" maker, but your maker. I think he's just sending her off with respect towards her faith. Great discussion, and fun to see it from a believers standpoint. All the best.
@krzyszwojciech
@krzyszwojciech 6 жыл бұрын
Plus the line "burden of proof tossed upon the believers". He doesn't believe, he is not convinced any God[s] exist, but should she see her maker, he's sure she'd get her wings.
@ashbringer1211
@ashbringer1211 6 жыл бұрын
but then he goes right on to say she was his "witness, eyes and evidence".
@krzyszwojciech
@krzyszwojciech 6 жыл бұрын
And he ends that line with: "Judith Marie, unconditional one". He was equating her character with divine attributes. He was pointing to her 'divinity', her strength despite all the suffering, her unconditional, motherly love for him.
@ashbringer1211
@ashbringer1211 6 жыл бұрын
In the context I would say he's referring to her unconditional faith through her suffering. I don't see him attribute her with divinity, apart from being an archetypal picture of one keeping her faith while suffering. Being the light that the "hypocrites" would only read of.
@krzyszwojciech
@krzyszwojciech 6 жыл бұрын
But he sings about his mother "You are the light and the way that they will only read about". Through the comparison to Jesus [yes, it's a religious metaphor, but still a metaphor] he makes her into the divine figure. And it's pretty clear that grammatically he speaks in hypotheticals ["should you see your Maker's face tonight"]. At first his pain and anger grow and he mockingly says that if it's all true she should demand her wings ["shake your fists at the Gates saying" [...] "fetch me the Spirit, the Son and the Father [...] Give me my wings!"]. At the end he calms down, saying that despite not meeting the burden of proof, if it's all true, she should just be honest about her life, because it should be enough.

What Vin said ( 15:50 ) hit it right on the dot for me. I lost my girlfriend due to leukemia a year after this album came out. I was only 18 at the time but my hate & frustration for all the people who gave (what felt like) false sympathy for me made me unappreciate those I considered close to me. Whenever I listen to Wings, Maynard makes such a large impact on me & I can honestly say I’m probably still around trolling in this comment section because of it lol RIP Ale’ 🥀 Thank you for making me appreciate life every single day

I know the "wings" are supposed to mean Judith Marie becoming an "angel", but for me it has another meaning. If she was paralyzed and in pain for 10.000 days, dying was going to set her free from her suffering ("10.000 days in the fire" sounds like 10.000 days in hell to me) and for me there's no bigger expression of "freedom of movement" (specially for a paralyzed person) than being able to fly. Leaving her damaged earthly body, now she can fly with her Heavenly body.

10,000 days is how long Judith lived with her affliction. I was just thinking that today.....had Maynard not lived this life, he would not have touched & affected so many people. I highly recommend reading his autobiography, A Perfect Union of Contrary Things. It will give you such amazing insight into who he is and his lyrics. This is the best reaction I have seen. It is awesome to see people experience Tool this way. You don't just listen to Tool, you experience Tool. Sori, I could feel you feeling it. You took me with you , even though I've heard this song thousands of times. I love experiencing this band through people experiencing it. It's one of the best feelings Thanks!

@@blindmelonlemonjellowhat are you on about man? Why would people here be butthurt just because MJK and Tool don’t 100% align with their belief structure? Tool doesn’t need you to gatekeep their music or purity test their fanbase, and the people here don’t need your condescending and narrow opinions about what Tool’s music means or who should enjoy it. Yes, it’s very obvious that Tool is into things like Gnosticism, numerology, and non-religious spirituality. That being said, one can absolutely be a Christian and still like Tool. I should know, I’ve been a huge fan for 20+ years since the first time I heard Lateralus. Believe it or not, people of faith also ponder the mysteries of the universe, human consciousness, and other things of an existential nature. Ironically, your rambling, barely coherent comment is incredibly closed-minded and judgmental towards those who believe different than you - and consequently not at all what I’d expect from a fellow Tool fan.
@blindmelonlemonjello

@@SSPspaz that was really deep what you replied and I appreciate it I cannot locate my comment I think it was flagged. I completely understand what you are saying I remember mostly what I said I appreciate what you are saying about not expecting a fellow fan to say such things it's not a excuse but I feel like I read too many comments and went sideways with multiple ideals that's really not a accurate overview of me personally or the manner in which I would approach any discussion or differences of beliefs/ or shared ideals. Sometimes things get to closed off and my mother was dying of cancer for many years she passed away November 27th 2023 I was completely consumed with taking care of her and listening to tool and reading comments in between a lot of things that were happening if nothing else this is just a window into how disadjusted one can become when things do get so powerful and out of control If anything reading this also was in any way effected by aforementioned statements shows how situations there is no way to prepare for can make another individual take time to analyze what you said no matter how far out and think of a very clever and eloquently thought out reply that really is entirely correct on all their counterpoints. Thank you for pointing out my mistakes in thinking on these subjects and allowing me to reflect on the deeper reasons it all occurred to begin with. Always be you I really do respect that you were listening to this beautiful live and spent this time reconnecting some really disturbing last years with my mother this reflection is very healing and personality eye opening to a very dark time my mother was extremely difficult on the best day the cancer melted her from the inside out. I apologize if this is incredibly drawn out hard to follow serious of events. Thank you for listening..

Even though Judith won't have to demand her wings and look him in the eye- this is Maynard's way of fighting for her and showing her finally that he believes she'll go to heaven. It's the final transition in his emotions and beliefs. He's basically telling her- you were right, now go get it mom.

My mother, thankfully, is still with us, but the song just hits me that hard. I'm so happy you all have gotten into Tool, they offer so so so much more than most bands. They are my number one (though I sometimes tie them with NIN). Go see them live, it's an amazing journey.

10,000 Days / Wings for Marie is about the most beautiful tribute a son could EVER write for his mother. This song makes me well up pretty much every time. I’m blessed to still have my mom, but as my parents get older, I’m increasingly mindful of the fact that I won’t always have them. As both a Christian and a Tool fan, I couldn’t even hope to write something so incredible for my own mom.

Thanks so much for this video. It was amazing watching someone else react the same way I did when I first heard this. I’ve been a Tool fan since mid 90s and seen them in concert many times. But when they toured this album he quit singing 10,000days/wings by the time he got to the venue(Houston) where I was. I was upset. I wanted to hear this live so bad. Some say it was too hard on him to sing it and he had trouble making it through the song on the few times they played it live. Thanks again for this reaction video.

I've been a Tool fan for 20+ years and I'm very happy to see you guys try to pull this apart from your perspective. For me, I lived Maynard's change of heart from righteous anger to willful spiritual calm over the years. I'd be elated if you would try to decipher Tool's 'Eulogy'. Not only is it one of the most outstanding technical performances of all time (the initial drum intro has something like 10 parts performed by one person) but it should result into a lot of conversational material for your channel. Cheers guys.

I lost my mother last year to a fight with Cancer, her faith wained. I feel James believes in a power that could be called god without the dogma of the bible. Much like myself. I tried to reassure her in the final hours and by this point her speech had gone but in her eyes she heard me. My heart was breaking watching this, tears streaming. 2 month after she passed I took a dose of the spirit molecule DMT. I thought I had died myself mid trip, among all the madness an display my mothers unconditional love grabbed me, embraced me and released me fully comforted that she was fine and that in good time I 'd be with her again. I really appreciate your take and love that the power of this music continues to light people up. Much love x

That's an interesting experience you had on DMT. I had a similar moment, not on any drug, but I was kinda hungover and in that moment between awake and asleep laying in bed. This was the morning after she passed. I began to see her walking down a hallway, but it was like I could see her from 360 degrees. She was dancing down this hallway, with a huge smile on her face, and I could feel this absolute warmth coming from her, surrounding and enveloping me completely. I always felt that this was her coming back and telling me that she was going to a better place now. The whole time I had this experience, I knew I was laying in bed, and even felt myself smile huge as I lay there. But at the same time, I felt removed from this world, like I was given just a bit of understanding of what's beyond. After the moment passed, I opened my eyes, stayed in bed and cried to myself for probably the next 30 mins, missing my mom, but thankful for a final moment with her. Condolences to you, and may your mom rest in peace ...

I may not always agree on some ideas, but your open-minded and thoughtful approach to how you treat both your own, as well as the views of others is very refreshing. Hearing some very intellectual and spiritual discussion has really re-invigorated my interest in Tool and just music in general, especially since it seems like we may really get a new album sometime soon. Well done and I look forward to more. Cheers! :)

Thanks for doing this. Great reaction to a phenomenal work. An interview I saw with Maynard a long time ago really struck me. He knocked on bands that do songs that are repetitious material complaining about family stuff and what not, in his opinion to stay with a formula to sell albums and keep a specific fan base. In part of the interview he made the statement that he does what he does as a release and a way to grow to move on. Which I think is very well exemplified in the progress of works you looked at.

I had shown Wings/10,000 Days to my grandmother for the first time and she cried. Like real crying. Not hysterical crying but still crying. She raised me as a kid from the time I was 2 all the way to 18, and every word of the song reminded me of her like to the letter I’s dotted and T’s crossed. Hence why I showed it to her. Afterward I told her that it remind me of her and that I listened to it A LOT which I still do and she just gave me biggest hug ever and gave me permission to play Wings/10,000 Days all the way through at her funeral. You guys mention that through Judith’s suffering Maynard was about to reach millions of people with his music and how many people that might have saved. Well, not to be corny but I am one of those people. I was so close to offing myself a few times and I had just bought a copy of their Lateralus and 10,000 Days albums. Whenever I would feel that darkness creeping upon me I’d pop in Lateralus and listen to the whole album then I would pop in 10,000 Days and listen to Jambi and Wings/10,000 Days. I’d automatically think of my grandmother and how she very well would’ve died from a broken heart and how selfish it would be to do that to her by ending my own relatively insignificant suffering and just multiplying her suffering 1000 fold. I couldn’t and won’t do that to her.

As a Tool and APC fan, I understand that Maynard confrontation is not against God. It is against all the behaviors and ideas that "believers" create around him. He insults religion, and the idea of "god" created by men (lower and upper caps on God were deliberate).

I gotta say though, I find it odd how some people view this song as some sort of clarion call to convert to Christianity. Some people have this mistaken belief that Maynard was an atheist before his mother died and that is not true. He may not be a christian, but he does have his own spiritual beliefs, just listen to the album Lateralus. This hasn't changed after his mother's death. The light he talks about carrying on isn't her faith in god... but her faith in humanity, in kindness, tolerance, understanding and empathy and in her own son, who she never stopped loving even when he stopped sharing that belief in god. She never thought that her beliefs made somehow made her better than those who didn't share them. The reason I have to point this out is why this song is so close to home. My own mother died of pancreatic cancer a few years back, and while she didn't suffer for 10,000 days (27 years) like Judith did, she did suffer, but that's not the similarity that matters here. The fact is the woman Maynard describes is far more familiar to me in all the other ways I mentioned, including accepting her son and loving him when he couldn't share her belief in god. I have a feeling Judith and my mom would have been friends had they ever met, and that's why this song destroys me every single time I hear it.

Great video guys, so glad you seemed to enjoy this song. It's a rare thing nowadays that someone would actually take the time and digest a 18 minute long song. Hope you found as have I that the rewards for doing so are more than worth it. When tackling listening to Tool for the first time most people recommend sticking to the "radio hits". You two choose to dive headfirst into the deep end. You keep posting, I'll keep watching.

Someone in the comment section suggested "Reflection" and I'll 2nd that but Vin seems to be into the harder stuff so you might want to mix in a banger first. I would suggest "Jambi" I think it has something to do with Maynard dealing with the fame of rockstardom and providing a normal life for his son. But Maynard seems to leave his lyrics intentionally ambiguous so the listener can personalize the lyrics in a way that suits them best.

I am so glad you guys in enjoyed 10,000 days. I came to Tool late with "The Pot" being my first song, but it was 10,000 days that made me stop and just go "wow". This song hits on so many levels and hits so hard. I am glad you could enjoy it musically and spiritually. When he sings "Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father" I just feel chills up my spine every time. If you want to be blown away by how detailed Tool can be musically, Look for the "Hidden Tool Track". You can play 10,000 days, Wings for Marie and Viginti Tres (a instrumental/environmental track from the album) and they sync up exactly to form a new song. For a next song I would Highly recommend Lateralus. It is considered by most to be there masterpiece. Not nearly a personal but it will still make you think and the music is mind blowing. I would love you see you guys do a reaction but if you do, listen to the song, react and then go watch Polyphonic's video kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHTUo4Z3r66jedU on some of the complexity they put into the song, and do a second reaction. "You don't hear, you experience it" that pretty much sums all the way behind how Tool approaches the process of making music. Usually Maynard has a few ideas on themes he wants to touch within the album, but he lets all the instrumental parts be done first, so he can take all the musics, lock himself up in his car (he said it himself) and just feel the music and write what he thinks about hearing the instrumental.

I recently attended a Tool Music Clinic. Maynard was not a part of it. The remaining members allowed various people to ask questions. The subject of psychedelic drugs came up a couple times. The guys were in agreement that while they have "possibly" all experimented with drugs in the past, it really isn't a part of how they write music. If other fans feel it helps them experience their music then that's fine for them, but they don't all "drop acid" and write music. I don't use drugs but always feel Tools music in different ways. Sori, you need to see them live! Vin, your breakdowns are brilliant! Sori is emotion, Vin is intellect. You guys are great!

Getting goosebumps from music is a rare condition that actually implies different brain structure. People who experience goosebumps from music have more fibers connecting their auditory cortex and areas associated with emotional processing, meaning the two areas can communicate better. academic.oup.com/scan/article/11/6/884/2223400 *(I just thought it was rare because not every band is Tool.)*

Maynard is still a non-believer, the entire trilogy was him essentially discussing his mother's unrelenting faith in a god that left her broken, 10000 days was him saying I hope your faith was rewarded when you go home ,at least that's how I interpreted the line " fetch me the spirit, the son and the father , tell them their pillar of faith has ascended"

Oddly enough, I was decidedly atheist when this album came out- but the overwhelming emotion that I felt experiencing Wings/10,000 Days made me question my rejection of God. The best way to understand "Heaven" and "Hell" in my opinion is to look at each one as energy, frequency and vibration. Nicolas Tesla believed that if you wanted to understand the universe, those are the main components to any and all things. I feel that if you become "enlightened", your frequency becomes higher and your energy stronger, but if you don't reach that enlightenment, you fall to a lower frequency and lower energy. I think the lower the frequency, the harsher the reality and eventually, if you keep falling, you can eventually cease to exist completely. The higher frequency/energy is Heaven, the lower/energy frequency is hell. This is my point of view on the matter anyway.

@@kukukachu Not sure if you will see this response after all this time, but I still want to put this out there. I have rejected christianity because I have pursued science and what christians often say do not align with the factual truth that we know today, so in others words I have heard only the voice of ignorant people that reject the factual truth and I ended up thinking "if this is christianity I do not want to be a part of that". You seem to try merging your faith and your knowledge, while it is one path to spirituality I still have my doubts if it is even possible or right to think about spiritual things with our materialistic understanding of the universe. I will have to read the bible and hopefully I will find the answers along the line.

He sings, "if you see your makers face tonight.." I don't think MJK is anymore of a believer before or after her passing. He's placating her more for her benefit as she's literally dieing. He loved her so much he's ushering her out as she needed, not as he necessarily believed. In part one he describes how tough it is to see her die or has already died, using cold fluorescent lighting of a hospital.

Maynard is probably agnostic.. this is just him sort of sending his mother off and letting her soak in her belief before she died. He is practically saying that if god were real he better take her in as the most dedicated person to the faith. I'm an atheist and take that meaning to the song.. it should be ambiguous, but I can't say he "found god" in this, only acknowledge his mother's path in life.

We listen to the tales and romanticize, How we'd follow the path of the hero. Boast about the day when the rivers overrun, How we rise to the height of our halo. Listen to the tales as we all rationalize, Our way into the arms of the savior. Feigning all the trials and the tribulations. None of us have actually been there, Not like you... Ignorant siblings in the congregation. Gather around spewing sympathy, Spare me... None of them can even hold a candle up to you. Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see. But enough about the collective Judas. Who could deny you were the one who illuminated Your little piece of the divine? And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me I'm gonna let it shine To guide you safely on your way. Your way home... Oh, what are they gonna do when the lights go down? Without you to guide them all to Zion? What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun Other than tremble incessantly? High is the way, But our eyes are upon the ground. You are the light and the way. They'll only read about. I only pray heaven knows, When to lift you out. 10,000 days in the fire is long enough. You're going home... You're the only one who can hold your head up high. Shake your fist at the gates saying, "I've come home now! Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. It's time now! My time now! Give me my Give me my wings!" Give me my [5x] Give me my wings You are the light, the way, That they will only read about. Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance. Burden of proof tossed upon non-believers. You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence, Judith Marie, unconditional one. Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence. Difficult to see you in this light. Please forgive this bold suggestion. Should you see your maker's face tonight, Look him in the eye. Look him in the eye and tell him, "I never lived a lie, never took a life, But surely saved one. Hallelujah It's time for you to bring me home."

This song made me think of Wings for Marie Part 1 and 2... and how they work together. I mentioned playing part one and two, forgot to say it was Wings for Marie. :) Sori nailed it! TOOL is an experience.
