Tool - Pushit (Salival) Lyrics: We've been trying something a little different this tour. We've been looking at one of our songs from a different angle, under a different light, so we can hopefully kind of see it almost for the first time. We'd like try that for you tonight, is that okay? We're gonna need your help though. We're gonna need your help and your permission, so we need you to find a comfortable space, that is not only comfortable, but vulnerable. I want you to shut your eyes and go there, and we'll meet you on the other side.. Saw that gap again today. While you were begging me to stay. Take care not to make me enter. If I do we both may disappear. Saw that gap again today. While you were begging me to stay Managed to push myself away And you as well, my dear And you, as well Pushed you away my dear I will choke until I swallow Choke this infant here before me What are you but my reflection? Who am I to judge or strike you down? But you're pushing me And Im shoving you And your pushing me And Im shoving you Rest your trigger on my finger, Bang my head upon the fault line You better take care not to make me enter If I do we both may disappear But you're pushing me And Im shoving you And your pushing me And Im shoving you You still love me We're pushing and were shoving And you're pushing and I'm shoving You still love me And were pushing and were shoving And I'm pushing as your shoving And Im slipping back into the gap again I feel alive when you touch me... I feel alive when you hold me... ...down Slipping back into you I am somewhere I dont wanna be, yeah Put me somewhere I dont wanna be Push me somewhere I dont wanna be Seeing someplace I don't wanna see Never wanna see that place again... Saw that gap again today While you were begging me to stay Managed to push myself away, And you as well, my dear If, when I say I may fade like a sigh if I stay, You minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way Pushing and Shoving and Pushing and Shoving and Pushing me There's no love in fear. Staring down the hole again. Hands are on my back again. Survival is my only friend. Terrified of what may come. Remember I will always love you, As I claw your fucking throat away. It will end no other way.

My take on the last part of this song has always been; If, when I say I may fade like a sigh if I stay, You minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way (He tells her he will fade away emotionally/mentally/growth wise if he stays, but she restricts him anyways, so he has to find another way to make her understand) There's no love in fear. (He's afraid of what will happen if he stays and she's afraid to let him go, so its not love) Staring down the hole again. (looking into the abyss of the relationship) Hands are on my back again. (her hands are on his back, trying to push him in) Survival is my only friend. Terrified of what may come. (He has to survive and escape but he's scared that he wont be able to or what will happen if he manages to)

"I think TOOL is like one of those rare moments when everybody is the genius." THE MOST ACCURATE STATEMENT POSSIBLE. The guitarist, bass player, and drummer construct every ounce of the music. The singer constructs every ounce of the melody and vocals. These are perfectionists. We may never see the likes of them again in our lifetime.

I am in my fifties and from my personal experience, 4 piece rock bands that showed that much musicianship were more common in the ´70s. And even then there were not that many. For the last 25 years though, Tool stands pretty much alone. For those interested, the writing process is the following: Chancellor or Jones brings a line or a riff, Carey joins in to flesh out the music, then Maynard puts lyrics to it on his own. The final product takes several months to mix afterwards.

I think this song can also be interpreted as the inner fight inside the mind of someone being abused, who is trying not to become the abuser, for example, a child living with physically violent parents ("find a vulnerable space"). "The gap" is that violent mental state that the victim does not want to inhabit, but he is being pushed into it. If he falls into it, he knows he will kill the abuser, whom he loves and, that would destroy him (the abused) too ("take care not to make me enter, if I do we both may disappear"). He is pushing himself away, but the abuser keeps dragging him down the hole ("slipping back into you"). When you get beaten up, you feel pain and your body segregates hormones like adrenaline and endorphines, which make you "feel alive" and numb the pain. If the abused does not manage to walk away, he knows that, sooner or later, he will fall into the hole/gap and the abuser will end up six feet under. In a violent relationship like this one, there is not love, but fear. The growing intensity of the lyrics is perfectly blended with the music. That's a 20 out of 10, if you ask me. ;) No artist has ever made me feel what Tool does. Off this planet.

You guys really to see them live. It's a whole nother experience. No recording can compare to the sound in the arena. And the entire stage is like a huge work of art from the special effects, to the lighting, to watching the band perform in perfect harmony. Maynard might even throw in a joke in between songs. Truly the best live band I've ever seen. I've seen them 7 times live, and they keep getting better. The last show I saw was approximately 3 hours long. And yes, they all play their part. The 4 of them compliment each other PERFECTLY. I love the fact that Maynard sings in the back, so the focus is not primarily on him. His voice is more than enough. I can't say enough about this band. Just an amazing experience.

Maynard in interviews, especially in the late 90s and early 2000s, is a very different person than he is now. Humble absolutely describes the man at the current stage of his life. His family, his love of wine making, and his lifelong experiences overall, have definitely changed him. Also keep in mind he has always had a disdain for the attention "famous" people get, so he always used to heighten his personality for interviews and press things because of his hatred for them.

Push it especially that version is probably the most beautiful song he ever used his voice in and In my opinion the best written one they have done. As an alternative outlook on the love in fear thing: I actually saw that as the other person is afraid of it ending, and is willing to sacrifice the other party for it. It's incredibly common in unhealthy relationships based on dependency issues. The other party in the song is overly dependent, and that is suffocating, or restrictive (of motion as an example). Sometimes it takes drastic measures to break away from that, because they will cling desperately when you try to leave (hands on my back again), and threaten stuff like suicide (survival is my only friend). I also think Maynard is voicing both sides to a degree, or expressing the overlap between the dependent and the depended on. The pushing away and choking and my dear stuff all fits into both perspectives. And infant could easily represent the relationship as a product of two people creating something together. Love this song, though, regardless. Nice analysis.
@ReignSurvives6 жыл бұрын
S1K0T1K 100% agree. This seems like a codependent relationship. The type of abuse that can only come from a place of “love”. It’s the fact that neither person wants to hurt the other but does unintentionally anyway. It’s the slow dawning that if you stay you’ll continue to hurt this person and they you. The whole “rest your trigger on my finger” is putting the other person in a position to hurt them but the language is of a soft gentleness. As if it’s a special connection. The arc really is the progression through wanting to shield your partner from pain, to protect them, and the unwillingness to intentionally cause them harm to save them from worse. There’s no love in fear seems to be this false notion that you could only have this intense of an emotion (fear) if the love was sufficiently deep. Fighting, and inflicting pain becomes the evidence of that connection. And of course there’s the fear of the open door. Ultimately he has to hurt her so they can both be safe. Like putting down a wounded animal. Regret and longing.

I was like well maybe I”m crazy cause most people were just like yeah man they’re cool, they can jam. I was like no bro, you’re missing it!

You can't replace Adam, Danny, Justin or Maynard. Also every time I've seen them live was a crazy spiritual experience can't explain it but most fans will say the same.

MOONSPELL "Tenebrarum Oratorium [ Andamento I ]" & "Tenebrarum Oratorium [ Andamento II ]" from the 1994 EP "UNDER THE MOONSPELL" (not to be confused with the re-recorded versions featuring the 2007 compilation "Under Satanae").

Saw tool during their 10,000 Days tour in Tucson, AZ. It was a religious experience. Their ability to consume and transport you to a real where the music is existence is beautiful.

Still patiently waiting for more Devin Townsend Live at the Royal Albert Hall :). Really any song from that concert I would be happy to see you guys react to. Devin's Live vocals are some of the best in the business and the Royal Albert Halls production value is top notch. If I had to pick 2 songs from that concert it would have to be "Bastard" and "The Death of Music". Both are incredible emotional performances

It's sucks you in, and everyone can relate. Hitting the heart of the soul. at the right time. Who's never been in a place they didn't want to be feeling there's no way out? therapeutic. sometimes you feel like there's no way out. and this is what it's all about. Everyone has been there, but you push through it. As they're pushing you. Have to push through it.Relationships can be like two that love each other so much they're clawing at each other. Just reality. It's a constant struggle and give and take. Best rock song ever!

This is a great song but I'm in the minority, Ænima version is more powerful to me and evokes more for me and gets underrated/overlooked cause of this version, and top 3 song for me (changes by mood with 46& 2 and Grudge) Glad they are probably full album listen to Ænima though. Finally.

Sori’s reaction after the first line... exhale, head shake, and glance at Vin... it took one whole line for you to fall in love with this.

I think Danny is the true mastermind behind the band. In saying that, they all work symbiotically to create this masterpiece of artistry.

Vin summed it up with what he said at 17:05 ...... "T00L is one of those rare moments where everyone is a genius." I concur Vin, I concur. Love your reactions, you two are great human beings.
