I also feel a profound sadness for 11 being stuck in time for so many years. I can picture this lost, scared kid frozen in a darkness. Waiting for someone to save him. And old man Maynard finally realizes he has to go back and save 11. But they save each other.

Another great reaction, guys! The thing to remember about Tool, is that the Justin Chancellor's bass is set as the lead guitar, while Adam Jones' guitar is meant to "add flavor," as he puts it. Not always the case, granted, but the more you listen to the band, the more it becomes clear. It's one dynamic of many that sets them so far apart from other bands.

Lithium Black I don't think those are fixed roles, in almost every song they change their roles. Both are lead and rhythm in every song

Ooohhhh THAT'S what that is.... Thank you soo much for that, I've known of and listened to tool songs few and far between for years, but getting way more into them through this channel and I thought there was something going on sonically that I couldn't quite put my finger on, I am a Bass player and have an ear for bass anyway, but it felt with tool that Bass was specifically waving for my attention and not merely hoping for it. So thank you again for that information.
@jodybarnes9466
@jodybarnes9466 4 жыл бұрын
I can't fully agree with that. The leads in Tool are Maynard and Danny Carey, which I think is what puts them so far apart from other bands. Adam Jones and Paul D'Amour...later and longer, Justin Chancellor...are the ones who develop the music/melody. Some of the songs are definitely bass forward, but they drive the song, not lead it. Drop D tuning lends itself to the guitars (Adam) and bass (Paul/Justin) trading off in that because you have the 2 bottom strings for both guitar and bass that are already tuned for harmony without even using a fret. But I wasn't never much of a guitar or bass player...and was a barely passable singer and drummer, so that must have something to do with my perspective. ;-)

This is a great song, and a great discussion. Anyone who experiences a childhood trauma can be emotionally stuck in that moment. This song can speak to anyone who is trying to heal, and rebond with that damaged inner child. The going away part was about Maynard being taken away from his mom to live with other family members, after she fell ill. I think this song, can also be seen as an overall description of his journey through Judith/Wings for Marie/10,000 days. From his childhood trauma to his finally healing and seeing his mom off to her creator. He talks about coming home, the same way he said Judith Marie was going home.

You guys are a wonderful example of what Tool can do to open the channels of inner thought. People often disagree with what they perceive the true meaning of these songs to be. There I believe is where we find the true measure of their art. By taking the time to understand his emotions, we can try and connect with our own. Whatever you think the meaning of the song is, will due. As long as it stimulates you to deal with some of those things that alot of people choose to ignore.

This song is around his mother but its directly about losing his child like imagination and innocence. His mom died at eleven. He lived in Ohio {under a dead Ohio sky]. Jimmy\eleven being his child hood. Saying about getting that back. Also the opening to the song (interrmission) is the mimic of the guitar in the opening

This is the first one this song is about Maynard not understanding what has happened to his mother. Judith is his response to the church that she attended turning her back on her after her condition they told her that she must have done something to deserve what happened to her which is also where his distrust of the church comes from. He goes over this in his autobiography a perfect union of contrary things.

Maynard grew up in Ohio with his very religious mother and strict step father. I believe he felt stifled and so in his teens he began to rebel/act out and ended up moving to rural Michigan to live with his father. The change of scenery did him good. I think he had a lot resentment towards his step father and ultimately at his mother.

What I think will happen eventually is you will hear the entire catalog of tool from opiate to the new album. Then you will be able to pick out the songs from undertow where Maynard is starting to express his thoughts about his life. Using this medium he begins his journey to start his healing process if this is deliberate only he knows. I see undertow as his full attack on theology not wanting to open up about his mother yet. There are really no mentions of the relationship, then aenima has the beginning of him opening up about the relationship. We journey with him as he accepts the loss and moves onto healing. The songs get more complex and deep with years between albums this is Maynard therapy screaming into a microphone and growing.

So gotta say as a huge tool fan I absolutely love these reaction videos. It's cool to see his music resonate with people as it has on me for so many years. I will say that as I've grown and matured so has my understanding for tool. What was once just an outlet for my anger now Carrie's depth and beauty witch has expanded further my love for Maynard and everything this dude does

Reading "perfect union of contrary things" biography of Maynard James Keenan. Never heard this song before, but it seems wild because I know what he's talking about having just read about him growing up in Michigan. Last night I just realized we go camping in the Manistee National Forests alot and that's right next to Maynard's home town.

His mother had a stroke and was paralyzed when he was 11, the song Jimmy is about him growing up while seeing her deal with her tribulations. she lived 10,000 days or about 27 years before her before passing. Maynard would of been 38 at the time. She did not like the subjects his music approached being a very devout Christian but from my understanding she attended a lot of their early concerts. She remained a steadfast Christian despite her church’s congregation judging her. They believed God was punishing her for some sin, that’s what he was referring to the “Collective Judas” aka hypocritical believers. Maynard didn’t keep to her beliefs growing up but respected them hence the religious imagery he uses. RIP Judith Marie Keenan We thank you for your sacrifice and for all you have done to bring up Maynard. For you have touched all of our lived even through we have never met you.

Jimmy = James= as in James Manyard Keenan.11 is when is mom became paralyzed and left Ohio to live with his dad is in Michigan. There is a thread throughout the album, particularly on the songs Forty six and 2, and Jimmy and Third Eye. You guys are awesome I love how you guys break down the song and try to put the puzzle together. Spiral out keep going...

Im with Vin on this. My take on this song and the lining up to Judith was that MJK was making multiple evolutionary steps emotionally, and so although he was ready to start dealing with these old emotions, he wasn't yet ready to do that (until pain allows). Great breakdown again.

Totally. Too much to type here but it's so refreshing to hear interpretations and opinions that actually build in giving people the grace to emote, make art, move people, etc. I, personally, am a religious person, but being involved in the arts, I have a ton of friends who are different religions, agnostic, or atheist. Regardless of it all, all points of view being with recognizing each other as imperfect humans and that we're brothers and sisters. So, to hear how you two approach breaking down music in an intelligent and open way without sacrificing your own views, is exactly the counterbalance KZbin needs. Looking forward to more videos!

Vin, Sori. I am LOVING your videos. I just watched Her Ghost in the Fog. You did an old school song some serious justice. I would love to see what you two think of Amorphis and their songs. I would recommend one of their newest songs called 'The Bee', or one of their older ones. Either 'Under the Red Cloud', 'Tree of Ages', or 'Sacrifice'. They are a Finnish melodic death metal/folk metal band, and are beyond talented. Thanks for the videos, can't wait to see what you do next!

Yeah, MJK's birth name is James Herbert Keenan. He changed his name to Maynard James Keenan later in his life, after he left the military, probably around the time he went to LA and started making music. So yeah, I'm sure "Jimmy" was what he was known as when he was a child (11 years old), and surely what his mom called him.

Platform Strange ... Um... I guess you're just trying to say he never went to a court and changed his name legally, and that's a matter of record, and may be true. But by the smallest stretch of the imagination, he still changed his name to Maynard. Everyone calls him Maynard. His friends call him Maynard. The masses call him Maynard. Hell, even his band mates call him Maynard. No one calls him James, and no one knows him as James Herbert. Even most fans don't know Maynard is not his given name. His birth name is mere trivia now. So by all means, he changed his name to Maynard.

Eric Stodolnik he will always introduce himself as James. But i see ya point. Unlike sir Elton John , who changed from Reginald Dwight by deed poll. Celebrities are weird, meatloaf has meatloaf on his credit card. But sir Michael Caine never changed his name and has always been (sir) Maurice micklewhite. Humans are odd things. "My name is Maurice micklewhite, not a lot of people know that "

I saw Tool in 1996 and they performed this song and MJK nailed the vocals. He had a rap before they played this about breaking the cycles of abuse, which colored how I interpreted the lyrics. I believe he's said he was a victim of abuse as a child. Regardless, great job with the reaction!

Tool is probably my favorite band. I also really like MJK other bands, APC and Puscifer. It's cool that you go deep into the lyrics and the meaning behind the songs. But personally I don't like doing this. I'm more into the musicianship of Tool. If your going to do a half and hour discussing the song it would be nice to mention the actual music too. Because Tool is a complete package. They have some of the best players in the game, including one of the best drummers ever.
