After some thought and conversation with some people, I’m thinking we should do another track as I’ve started hearing greater opinions on multiple tracks, go ahead and vote in the Poll on the community page to decide which Tool song we should next off the new album, after that I think we wanna go all the way back to check out some stuff from their debut! Andy & Alex Andy & Alex you must do “18 and life” by skid row. this is their biggest song along with “I remember you” probably the greatest hair metal song of all time. they are a 80s and 90s band who’s first album was released in 1989. their first album had 3 of their biggest songs. 18 and life was inspired by the guitarist reading a story in the newspaper about an 18 year old who accidentally killed his best friend with a gun. he didn’t know the gun was loaded. the 18 year old got prison for life. the singer, sebastian bach, has an extremely powerful voice which was meant for the song. the range of his voice was incredible and “18 and life” scored #4 on the US charts giving them their biggest hit.

What's the best way to describe what Tool is? to me it's that moment from Rick & Morty where in a flashback we see Rick asking Morty if he wants to know what TRUE level feels like, afterwards he builds a platform that gives Morty this overwhelming sensation that he never knew existed, and when he has to leave the platform he immediately freaks out and wants to go back to what he just experienced. To me, that is what Tool is; once you get a taste of something TRULY out of this world then nothing else can compare to it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y37adH2metp2apY

As a lifelong fan, nobody knows what this album is yet. It's far too expansive to really be unpacked. I personally think it could be the 4th best, maybe even their 2nd best album, who knows. 7empest is My least favorite track, it sounds like a Swan song, and I don't accept that as reality, even if it is. Pnuema, Descending, Culling Voices, Invincible are all must hear tracks, with Fear Inoculum and 7empest, that's the whole album at least 75 minutes worth. The rest is meant for an album listen setting. From a sheer sound and writing standpoint, this is the most challenging and developed music theory we've seen from them ever. They are legends, and a lot of this album Is in 7. These guys are going to be doing some serious counting on stage, no time for showmanship, let the music and video boards do the talking. Can't wait to see this album played live.

Intolerance is the 1st song off of Undertow. The sound effect at the beginning is a scuba tank running out of air, pretty much gives you a preview of how dark the album is.

All eyes on Andy's shirt at the 5:00 mark, very creepy. Ok alex you might relate to this. This song sounds like my hair feels on a Sunday morning, a tempest. This song however did not draw me into it and make me feel like I'm part of it. They should of placed us in a tiny vessel out in the storm where they could of controlled our every emotion. I got distracted by Andy's shirt. 🤭

When I think of past Tool lyrical content I remember the themes of our spiritual, eternal self. I interpret this song as the 7empest being our lives. The "Heat lightning flash but don't blink", seems to be our soul entering our body, and to blink means we may miss important moments in our temporary lives. "Misleading, Tranquility ruse, You're going to happen again, that's what I think", seems to be talking about our current form/body/life being a distraction from our true Eternal self, and that for us to happen again is to be reincarnated and continue our Spiritual Evolution. "Follow the evidence, look it dead in the eye, You're Darkness trying to lull us in before the havok begins, into a dubious state of serenity", seems to be talking about how we are the Darkness which lull's ourselves into our false sense of security during our waking lives, to ignore our inevitable death until the time truly comes. The Darkness makes me think of outer space and how it is a blank canvas, ready for any artistic form to be created, far from No Thing, but an extension of our eternal and indestructible self. "Acting all surprised when you're caught in the lie, It's not unlike you, we know your nature", seems to be referring to the lie of ourselves believing we are separate from the force many know as "God", and when you finally cross over the veil of "Death" you will be surprised when the other souls reveal your true nature to you once again. The 7empest seems to represent our Life/Death, and the "calm before" seems to represent our lives in our dubious state of serenity.

Thanks for addressing the lyrical content! I'm new to Tool and no one I know listens. Plus, not researching... Going in blind. I like where you're going w/ your theory... For me, if you link Fear Inoculum & 7empest, it seems to be an issue outside one's self, no? It's just a feeling I have. Haven't heard rest of album, as I'm experiencing via Andy & Alex. So, I may be way off. -- What is a song, if the words mean nothing at all? Peace. :)

I am glad you guys have appreciated my interpretation of the lyrics, but a good thing to keep in mind is that Maynard usually designs his lyrics to have multiple meanings, so there is still more to be discovered. I think Andy and Alex accidently hearted the comment and quickly corrected the mistake lol :P
@lisaw56045 жыл бұрын
@@chrisgore8597 Yeah, your interpretation was so well thought out and beautifully written. I'm happy you've added the "multiple meanings"... I thought, boy, did I miss the point! I'll leave my blind reaction posted. lol I definitely am learning from the long-term Tool listener's posts (rely on, actually). Never has a band caused me so much consternation... Thanks again! :)

Thank you for reconsidering. I do like 7empest, but it is far from my favorite track on the album. Pneuma has me hooked something fierce. Self titled track is still getting better with each listen. Then invincible/descending/culling voices are also beautiful tracks on another level themselves. This album touched me just as the other Tool albums have. Had me in tears twice on the first listen. Can be overwhelming at first.

when you can feel your goosebumps and hair standing, you know it is good. one of their best songs, high up there with lateralus. So often, prog rock likes to (1) be long for the sake of being long, (2) use complicated odd time signature and shredding for showing off. But Tool and this song, achieve them without you feeling too long because you are in trance!

This is an amazing song. I've been following this band since I was teenager back in the 90's. Glad to see people from younger people like you guys are discovering it. People from my generation were blessed to grow up listening to bands with substance like Radiohead, Perfect Circle, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Melvins, Queens Of The Stone Age, Unsane, Death From Above 1979, At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta and - on a more experimental and, occasionally, heavier record - Lightning Bolt, Ex-Models, Melt Banana, Big Business, Mastodon, Dub Trio, Russian Circles, Skeleton Key, Red Sparowes, Book Of Knots, Tomahawk, Zu, Fantômas, Car Bomb, Necrophagist, Cephalic Carnage, Moonchild, Naked City, Painkiller, Miasma And The Caroussel Of Headless Horses, Girth, Kayo Dot, Cleric, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Hella, Marnie Stern, Peijman Kouretchian, Marc Ribot, Ruins, Holy Smokes, Ahleuchatistas, Electric Masada, Rashanim and Secret Chiefs 3.

This album was almost recorded as one long song I heard. The full disc has the connecting bits but it was still pulled apart. Older? Disposition/reflection/triad... it’s all as one and have to be together! Rock on guys!🤘😎🤘

If you like heavy tool, I suggest the opiate album. And as far as what you were talking about production, the past albums were recorded on actual tape. Maybe with the modern era, they had to record with a digital interface. Just my opinion. I'm sure you could find out how they really recorded it
