Tool, Dream Theater, and Hava Nagila ALL use THIS scale

In this video, we'll look at the Phrygian Dominant mode/Freygish scale, a scale used in Tool's "46 & 2," (in the bass line) Dream Theater's "Home," and Jewish traditional songs such as "Hava Nagila." Then we will play an original groove using this scale on U-Bass.

Really helpful! I just learned how to play 46 & 2 but I love learning in depth about what makes a song. I’ve never heard a Dream Theater song before but yes you can totally see the same scale in the songs. Thanks again 😁

WoW. You brought out the big guns for this Video. Not only did you bring out your Wanderer with the Flat Wounds which I have not seen you play in a while, but you even brought out your doppelganger playing the Cahoon. All I can say about this video and scale is Chill. This scale is so cold. It would be safe to say it's even Fringed LOL. The grove (I assume you wrote for this video) is a Stone Cold Grove. It's a very Suspenseful sounding vibe. But in a funky way. As a Jewish person who also plays a good bit of Jewish Music among other types of music (hopefully not too dominantly LOL), in all seriousness, I know this scale very well. But as you mentioned the Jewish song that people equate to the most that use this scale "Hava Nagila" I figure I would share with you my favorite version of that song. This is by a Polish Metal Band called RootWater who originally minus the Hebrew and Yiddish parts did this song originally in Polish. But they also sang an English-translated version and below is the link to the official KZbin video of that from 15 years ago approximately. Can you feel the Frigidness'? LOL. Let me know what you think after you hear this almost 4-minute version of the song. Jewish music sounds great as Metal I think. LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed this one, Seth! The Journeyman was feeling a bit lonely, and it was hard to play this one on the Exotic Mahogany without excess string noise from the round wounds. The flat wounds made it much more enjoyable to play/listen to. That is the heaviest Hava Nagila I've heard! I can definitely hear the frustration and anger in the message as opposed to the celebration version of the song I'm used to at weddings. Very interesting take on it, for sure! Thanks for sharing!
