Yeah those old live performances were amazing, Maynard was always so tense and focused. In that live clip, at the end of Eulogy right after Maynard's big scream, the last 8 or so bars Danny goes into that tribal drum beat, Maynard busts into a trace dance thing that just looked hilarious and cool as shit.

@@benkelly7182envious affff I’ve got to see them twice since Fear Innoculum, and as great as that was I’d kill for Eulogy That said, they played Intolerance outta nowhere n it was Danny’s birthday and I think (?) Maynard’s was coming up or recent maybe (?) but He was CLEARLY driven by Danny Bday (audience got to sing happy bday to him), you could tell it was pushing Maynard to prove he still had it eventho they were getting old Intolerance literally had the stadium shaking so hard I thought the actual stadium was going to collapse… Amazing Not to mention Danny’s double bass ending at end of Schism with that brief moment of silence before audience went crazy, was so powerful that it was still reverberating Thru my body in the stands for a good 15 seconds… I’ve seen LOTS of bands n never felt such power in my life

Yeah, it took me many years to realize the same thing, but you can tell that that sound is in the exact timbre of his voice through a megaphone, if you listen closely. I'm guessing it probably occurred to me the first time I saw a live performance of this. It was so long ago, I just can't recall. So cool that Tool is always pushing the envelope with how to approach each instrument. So, yeah... Geebz, most of us didn't know what we were hearing on first listen, either. The production on Aenima and Lateralus are, for my money, the best of all Tool albums. David Bottrill produced both and is an absolute master.
@JaySay
@JaySay Жыл бұрын
If you were to pin down the 'sound' of Tool over their entire career together, it would absolutely be found within Aenima and/or Lateralus. Aenima has that angst and sarcastic comedy from their earlier years, and Lateralus goes hard into the trippy, melodic greatness that Tool has mastered today.

Idk why Aenima gets so much praise I personally think it sounds awful compared to how good the others sound I will say, idk if you know this, or how true this is, Bottrill recorded Danny’s drums sideways ! Meaning instead of normal headphone on hi-hat to your left like your sitting at drums , just like every other record since beginning of time, he has them reversed with hi-hat on right, etc….. Which I personally think is amazing and one reason why the album has such a unique sound I don’t HATE the production, but songs like hooker with a penis sound like they were recorded in a tin can for some reason 🤷‍♂️

I’ve heard more than one member of the band say it’s about L. Ron Hubbard (founder of Scientology) Maynard often uses things from different religions, especially Christianity, in order to connect it something some of us are familiar with. Yet he still usually won’t say what he thinks about, but clearly he had something in mind while writing. He likes to leave things up to the listener.

@@paultullo3275 They wouldn't say that stuff about Bill Hicks. Nope this is definitely an attack on L Ron Hubbard and people like him. "He had a lot to say, he had a lot of nothing to say" Are you familiar with Hubbards books? Science fiction epics that fill an entire book case with God knows how many huge thick books in a series, and they are almost unreadable, literary masturbation by a man with no talent at all. I'd call that a lot of nothing to say. Bill Hicks was a friend of the band, and he had a lot of SOMETHING to say, and was of a similar mindset to the guys of Tool, think for yourself.

Right and the sort of cynical sarcastic take on someone's Eulogy, both praising and berating them for all their human faults and triumphs goes right along with Bill Hick's comedy stylings. i think if he were alive to hear this song, he would've said that's it. that's fucking it exactly.

I also recall reading once that Maynard wanted to try his hand at stand up comedy and he opened up for Bill a couple times.

it is an easy conclusion to draw (that it's about Bill) but Maynard has gone on record to say that it isn't about any one person in particular, though it could be applied to many.

Don't know why this wasn't a single, because it's my favorite track from that album, and one of my top favorite Tool songs - wish they would still play it live. Your Tool reactions are by far the best and most informative. Thanks!

I saw them in Tacoma, WA after concerts opened back up. Thankfully, Maynard's lungs were back to normal. He belted out the Grudge scream and it was on point. That was such a great concert, I'm hoping they go out at least one more time. I'd love to see them again and again

Hey Geebz! Love your work! Small question. There's this song that few have heard but it is, in my humble opinion, on of the best songs ever made. It's a redo of David Bowie's Bring me the disco king (Lohner mix). You definitely should check that out! Other artist like John Frusciante, Josh Freese and of course Maynard James Keenan were involved. A gem that flew under the radar!!

I'm still here Geebz! Also the very first time I saw Tool (Seattle 2001) they played this live. The weird "synth" noises you're hearing during the intro is actually Maynard with a voicebox of some sort.

The thing I want to know is are you now a true fan of Tool? I can see your appreciation for what they do, but are you listening on your time away from the camera and loving them too? You have made me realize little things I've never noticed since the 90s and made me love them even more (even though they've always been my fav band) so it would be really cool if all of us who love Tool this much made you love them too.

Great reaction! This is actually my favorite "straightforward" Tool song. Such an infectious work of art that keeps things simple for the most part but has litterally ZERO fat and aside from the similar (although NOT actually alike) structure of the first and second verses, has next to no real repetition within itself. Amazing. What lean beast this song is.
