Bill Hicks was a stand up comic that would open up for Tool until he died of cancer. What a beautiful sentiment to write and perform this song very often. Bill wasn't just a comedian but he spoke about social issues in a way that Dave Chappelle does today. Read the lyrics and it will all make sense and you will fall in a deeper love with the band

One of my favorite Tool songs of all time. Your take on the "He had a lot to say" section was interesting. I take it to mean that the person he's eviscerating believed he had a lot to say (and probably was very talkative), but none of it was important or of any value("He had a lot to say. He had a lot of nothing to say.").

I agree, and then compares the person to Jesus which adds a whole new level of meaning. Did this person continually preach to others in his voice that was strong and loud? A lot to say, but a lot of nothing. It was all BS, making himself out to be a leader or a savior.

Also, as a guitarist, I appreciate how you give Adam credit. Most people, especially guitarists, overlook Adam Jones, because not flashy. He’s a basically texture artist. That not only applies to how he plays guitar but in much of his regular art that he creates. It’s very rich. He’s very good at creating ambience and his rhythm is quite percussive. Usually Maynard, Danny, and even Justin get the accolades. It’s nice to see someone constantly praising my Adam!

"He’s basically a texture artist" is such a great way to describe him, at least to my non-guitarist ears. Tool is a big part of me, and this album was my first entrypoint to the band when I was a preteen. I worked my way backwards from here, and then forwards when Lateralus came out, and forward still. Texture is such a nice one for what the musicians of Tool do, and even for what Maynard does with his voice across all these albums. Between their naked ability and the distortions and sounds used in the mix!

@@Trepanation21 that’s the same way I found tool. I was 17 just starting senior year and was already into grunge and metal and really all rock music. Then a friend of mine who was like 2 yrs younger(who always got the newest music and much that I never heard of probably because I didn’t have cable/mtv) let me borrow this cool band called tool; a little cd called aenima. Instantly hooked; as if I found something I didn’t know I was looking for. I worked my way back to undertow and opiate; saw the. In concert a couple times and then a few years later Lateralus came out. I still consider Aenima their best ALBUM .Lateralus has a bunch of legendary singles and the whole album is good, but when it comes to a complete piece of art Aenima is disturbingly haunting; like a cold wet thing. Lie I said I might be biased since it was my first tool album and sort of set the tone for what I think of when I think of “tool.” Undertow was probably one of the best first albums ever made. It’s extremely mature for a new band. Lateralus of course is considered their magnum opus by most and their subsequent albums are all freaking great. But Aenima is what an album sounds like when a band is still hungry. Before they blow up completely and start reaping the benefits of their success. There’s something really honest about it. Even undertow wears its influences pretty openly but Aenima is sort of the stepping stone between mild success and the commercial success they attained by Lateralus. I could go on all day about it so I’ll shit up now!😅

I wanna say I was 16 or 17 years old when I first heard this song. My brother bought me the album for Christmas about my junior year of high school . . . . in any case, I loved it on whatever level I could understand it at the time. And the beauty of Tool for me is that like most music it will take me back to a place or an emotion, but then as I age I can revisit these and dive deeper and hear new things every single time. No other band has accomplished that for me on this level . . . a joy to watch you experience it. Thanks for sharing all these.

notes (like the musical pitches) on lyrics "you claimed all this time that you would die for me" show up at beginning of the track, as everything builds upon itself, but before the guitar distortion enters. that's all megaphone. it's about ego. our collective's false sense of separation. For me it's a sarcastic look at leaders who pretend to sacrifice themselves for the people beneath them or their followers but have no interest in doing so "you claimed you would die for me", the people can't live without someone to follow so as each pretender is replaced they find the next "fool martyr" to hang on the cross, the symbol of making a sacrifice, the sarcasm comes in because they're wasting their time doing this instead of solving their own problems "you must be crucified for our sins and our lies". It's not necessarily about religious groups or cults though the song makes those references, the message could be applied to any self serving leadership figure.

I remember when I was 18 waiting for aenima to be released in 1996. Bought the album, listened to it, then took it back, and asked for my money back. I was too used to the punk rock element of opiate and the heaviness of undertow. Aenima just sounded like noise to me. Then lateralus came out in 2001... I went to the show at the Phillips arena in Atlanta and realized just what a fool I'd been. I've since been on this journey with 7 tool concerts 2 perfect circle and 2 pucifer shows, and 2 pilgrimages to Jerome Arizona( i like wine). I'm just writing all this to say that not a single song has gotten old, and you should listen to H next :)

By only listening to one Tool track at a time -- and making a big deal out of it, not only for us but for yourself as well, you are doing a really smart thing. I think it's part of the reason you love the band so much -- you don't miss the awesomeness of each track. For me, though, since the Aenima album, I have had that kind of anticipation for each new song that gave me a similar experience with each new album. Except Lateralis. It took me a few years honestly before I appreciated the awesomeness.

I've read that Eulogy was written about a friend of the band who passed away but it could've just as easily been written, in part, about certain types of political figures both today and throughout world history. True to form, their music often has these epic double meanings. I love that they are getting more recognition, their talent is truly unmatched.

Keep listening to this one and I promise it will be in your Top-5. It just gets better every time you hear it. FYI...The tink-tink-tink-tink sounds at the beginning of the song were created by Adam actually picking his strings behind the bridge of his Silverburst Gibson Les Paul. That same picking pattern is used throughout the entire song in various keys. Ultra creative!!!

I think he is up to owning 18 of the original 1979 Silverbursts which Gibson says only 150 to 200 were made.

A life changing moment when I was first introduced to Tool via this album back in the 90’s. Just as impactful 25 years later and I have since introduced my kids to their music. How good 🙏🏼

This song was about Bill Hicks. A few songs on this album are a reference to his life and his image appears in the album liner notes back in the days when CDs were a thing.

First off, i enjoy and respect your reviews immensely. As a devoted Tool fan and As a musician one of my favorite things is to witness new Tool fans being born so its been a big trend for awhile to watch these reactiom videos amongst the hip hop community to somewhat get to re-experience our first time hearing Tool and share the magic of it, but your reactions by far have really captured and expressed that magic in such an authentic way that is so relatable no matter what background one approaches Tools music from. This is an underrated gem for sure and i just wanted to add that on this track, Dannys reserve and control is very apparent but he does some things that are very subtle (especially if you dont play drums lol) yet are extremely difficult and impressive and often go unnoticed. They all do, for that matter. Danny and Maybard tend to get most of the praise and recognition, but Adam and Justin are equally integral in their sound and Tool wouldnt be Tool without each of their unique and variant contributions to each song as a whole and the range of dynamics they fulfill throughout their entire catalogue! Just an all around unique and stellar once in a lifetime kind of band, and thank you for the authenticity you bring to these reactions in reviewing their works and representing such a relatable appreciation for that magic they give us!

One of the best tracks they have. Back in the 90's it was rumored that this song was about people who are egregiosly full of themselves; and specifically about the failed relationship with Henry Rollins.

imagine being 12,13,14 yrs old hearing this for the first time and being damn near the only person you know listening to this, with maybe one other friend, bc nobody else has either heard it, or if they did they didnt get it or thought it was too weird or too scary. but you, you liked it. alot. you didnt care. you had no idea they would become what they've become and affect people like this now, but you knew it would come around somehow. well that was me as a young teenager in the 90s, and it was the last best time to be a teen. im 40 now.

I am loving going on this journey with you. I been here and subbed since the 1st TOOL reaction. Eulogy is definitely one of my most favs of TOOL. It changes over time depending on life and mood. The way Adam works the strings in the last 3rd of the song is phenomenal and some of the most expressive soloing I've ever heard in my life

This cd got me going, with Tool. Wore out 3 CD's over a couple years. Never listened to any other Tool albums for 20 years or so. Refound them about 4or5 years ago. Damn, didn't know what I was missing in my life. Still to this day I have only listened to 2 tracks off of Fear Inoculum. But when I do, I know it's going to be an epic ride...🤟
