He actually loves the album. Think about it... He gave it a 4/10, 4 being the primary quadratic integer of the constellation Argo Navis. When Mercury is in retrograde, this joins the twelve ancient celestial constellations belonging to Zodiac in orbit (with Argo Navis becoming the thirteenth). Babylonian astronomical cartography circa 400BC named Zodiac as the eleventh star of Gavidriel. 13 (also the number of years between Tool albums) multiplied by 11 is 143. In August 2019 (when Fear Inoculum was released) the first moon of Atlas Coelestis, Almagus, was eclipsed which added it to the constellation. 1 + 143 = 144…a fibonacci number. Therefore Fantano’s real review score is 144/10 - clearly the highest scoring album he has ever reviewed. Congratulations Tool, you’ve done it again!

It's interesting how polarizing the album is/was. Personally I absolutely adore it - to me it feels like a beautiful musical and lyrical synergy that creates a mellow, meditative examination of growing old, anxious and tired - something I can definitely relate to as an old fart rocker, lol. And I disagree 100% on the chugging in Invincible, to me that groove is pure joy and super addictive :) I do agree on the boring interludes though... those were always my least favorite part of the band's work

I sat down and listened to the full album in a crowd train station (Munich), in the most crowded hour. Watching the busy world while being a still point with Tool in the ear, I realized that actually you need to have a certain mood/ environment to capture the meaning of some parts of the album. This album is extremely deep, but in another dimension. It asks us to explore, reflect. As MJK said, these songs are not Jingles, the album is an art like a movie. Maybe we should try listening to them in different moods and locations. And we might need few yards to fully digest it.

@RedceLL1978
@RedceLL1978 4 жыл бұрын
@Freddie faulig Same, i agree Freddie. And to OP, you don't have to change your music taste based on the fact that you don't like one album, that's absurd and stupid. Personally, I cannot stand his singing rhythm and lyrically, it's pretty terrible compared to what we're all used to. It's clear that the band wrote the music separately and Maynard just waited until it was done and wrote lyrics over it. The music doesn't accommodate his verses and the lyrics at all. Contextually, It lacks lyrical cohesion and amounts to the preachy, cheaply philosphized, boring ramblings of a Maynard with nothing left to really say. And vocally, he's not in the same stratosphere of projection or conviction at all. It isn't even close. The rest is all as Tool as you'd like, if rather droning and boring in it's attempts to impress. Musicianship is 7/10. everyone else hasn't lost a step insofar as their proficiency to play. There was just nothing all that inventive or impressive about much of it. Maynard is the weak link and needs to hang it up. He can get away with his subpar crap when he's writing for Puscifer, but it crashes and burns miserably under the Tool banner. This is not an album I'll ever be buying and I've bought all Tool albums to date and was a teenager and in love with Tool when they emerged with Undertow in 1993. I'm not mad at them at all. For their age, their musicianship is still impressive compared to alot of bands out there. But at some point, every band loses their mojo and just doesn't have anything profound to say anymore. This album is the equivalent of Chuck Liddell pushing 50 and coming out of retirement. Steps into the octagon. Still looks big. Still has that mohawk. Still looks mean and tough. Gets knocked out cold because he's too old and way past his prime. Hang up the gloves, Maynard. You're just milking it because you know all these gullible lemmings will spend the money. As a side note, anyone who thinks this is as good as Tool ever was doesn't have a grasp on the intricacies of eloquent writing, musicianship and their respective implementation. These people are devoid of credibility on the topic. A Tool album like this will still appeal to the mindless simpletons holding up devil horns with no semblance of depth or the capacity for nuanced, subjective thought. Once, Maynard's writing was a bastion for critical thinking that railed against the sheepery of mainstream drones. Now, his fans are just exactly that. Blind masses, like wide eyed and oblivious lemmings who refuse to accept the reality.

Joshua Jones They don’t need to understand the intricacies of eloquent writing, musicianship and there respective implementation. This album has no soul its lifeless any moron could figure out this album sucks. If anything I think the opposite is true and people who like the album like it purely for the bands chops and don’t realize the compositions aren’t really working there just listening to there respective instruments. The same goes for the production the average joe would say this albums production sucks the guitar is too clean Maynard vocals are too low and the drums are muted to the point where its hard to tell a tom from a kick-drum but alot of engineers are praising the production saying its cutting edge sounding so unique and fresh its clear and sounds so tight! They can’t differentiate between tasteful production and production that sounds very professional but isn’t good.
4 жыл бұрын
@@alexrinaldi3257 Quit talking like a politician. You say lifeless when you just mean boring. And boring only because you didnt listen to Tool for the experience, you simply 'dug' a few of their heavy songs, which by the way most fans agree are the most forgettable. The layers in these songs are fantastic, and further show just how deep and brilliantly psychedelic they can get. Go listen to A Perfect Circle that's clearly more up your alley, your criticism is weak.

I think at this point Tool has become an instrumental band. Maynard is just a background instrument. When viewed as a vehicle for the band to display ambitious instrumental compositions, it’s pretty great. The problem is that I along with most people, love this band as a full rock band, not an instrumental group. But you can’t deny it’s the heaviest yoga soundtrack ever made.
@iantheehee9153
@iantheehee9153 8 ай бұрын
I mean, that's the whole point of the band. "maynard is just a instrument" cause that's literally their intention. That's why they called themselves tool. This album has really grown on me over the last few years. I really, REALLY disliked it when it came out, everything seemed so overplayed, overthought and way too long. But within a few replays, it's become one of my most played albums as a whole. I like Tool, I don't worship them like a lot of people seem too do. I just enjoy plugging a few songs on here and there into a playlist of my youth. But something about this album has really grown on me. It just works. Wish there was a better way to describe it. The way it moves from one song to the next, it's sort of a trip. Found myself listening to it at work in a place where there are droning fan noises, negative temperatures and no contact with outside people, and putting this album on as a whole every once in a while made me sort of get it? Maybe? It easily moves from one track to the next as one great Tool song. Sounds stupid, I don't really know how to describe it, but feel like in a few years people will retrospectively come to love this album. A lot of people already do, and watching live video performances of songs really helps understand the mood they where going for. TLDR watch some live videos of songs from this album then revisit, it's difficult to describe a mood without seeming like it's going too deep. Hell of a record.

Agree with your assessment of the album. It is such a grower and I feel out of all Tools albums it has the best "flow" through it and it is perfect for long car journeys or listening to when I have a long boring job to do at home. Seeing them perform many of the songs live also made me appreciate just how technically brilliant the songs are.

Aetheri I think Tool got caught up in their own hype. The title song doesn’t even have a radio edit, just 8 minutes of insufferable twangs that sounds a lot like their old stuff if it were composed by a talentless retard. As for the lyrics, it’s like they had a computer randomly pick words out of “The Fart Sniffer’s Dictionary for Deep & Complex Angsty Teenagers.” Their old stuff is great & all, but this? I wasn’t even hyped for their next album & I was horribly let down.

How do you expect a work of art to be appreciated when you listen to music like a jew tied to a pole being force fed sludge until he dies ? Needleboy is the jew, KZbin is the pole, and uploading music reviews for kids ages like 13-21 to watch and agree with is the force fed sludge. Kids See Ghosts is a rap album about dmt and open mindedness so Anthony can get that message across through the most basic form of music but god forbid someone with that same idea puts it on a much much larger scale and all he has to say is "I just dont think they deliver like they used to" Fuck you id like to see what cringy music anthony could make if he even tried.

Oxi Dovahklean Ironic you call his audience kids/immature just to make a child’s argument. Whenever somebody gives the ol’ “you try and do better then!” to a critic, they’ve lost the argument. We get it, your mad & disagree w/ Anthony. One doesn’t have to be able to make music to have an informed opinion on its quality. That’s one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard & I follow politics ffs. Also, what do Jews have to do with anything? Like, I’m not adverse to racial humor at all, but... what? Also, are you sure his biggest demographic is 13-21? Maybe things have changed, but I never knew any kids that gave a single fuck what any critic said about ANYTHING when I was younger. They only cared whether they or their friends liked it & if they did, they usually were in it 100%, in that they’d agree with anyone giving it good reviews & shit on anyone giving it bad reviews. it took 13 years for a band who is as revolutionary as, say, Black Sabbath was in the sense of creating the entire metal genre. by that i mean Tool revolutionized the idea of taking progressive rock and putting enough distortion on it that you could conceivably call it metal. i think the album is great. for the standards of mainstream music. for Tool? it's alright. the production work on maynard's vocals is at its worst here, for sure. that's one thing i would say even 10KD had going for it.

It's the best thing they have done by far. Listen, I am old, I saw them in the Lateralus tour in Europe. Lateralus is great but I remember reading many reviews at the time it came out that expressed a bit of disappointment with it because it pretty much followed Aenima and I always agreed. The infamous pitchfork review wasn't that misguided if you ask me. Lateralus has been ridiculously inflated by the more notes=better music crowd. Aenima is the complete package: Intense, emotional, beautiful, catchy, humorous, tragic, epic. It has more personality than anything they have done (just the production on it's own makes it a very distinct album). In Aenima they developed the musical language they have used ever since. One of the best albums ever made. I despised 10000 days, and while it's very inferior to Aenima/Lateralus I clicked with it and I enjoy it for what it is. To me Fear Inoculum is the insufferable boringness that comes of an uninspired band that just doesn't have it anymore.

Watching this 2 years later, I definitely noticed comments you made coming from a place of ignorance. The legal hell they were in for the past few years before Fear Inoculum explains why they took so long, why they couldn't tour for a few years and why their music wasn't available online for streaming. Nothing could be done or progress until the lawsuits were settled. These involved the record label. Thank god, it's over and their contract with the label has also ended. I hope to see Tool release way more stuff including music videos, EP maybe, albums, etc. They obviously take years to make a great album. That was always the case, but now they are independent and can decide when to start working and when to release. No more bullshit holding them back now. So we'll see what happens. They're also getting older and their prime young years are over so now family and other things hold a priority. Danny alone is nearing 60 so... Can't see them wanting to go on forever like other big bands have. They've talked about the YEARS upon YEARS of recordings they have of nearly every show. So that stuff will release one day. Not all of it but I mean there's enough for multiple releases from the sound of it. Many theorize it's their retirement plan. Release live music once they retire.

Maynard made a comment about how the record "was pretty great at one point" but blames the outcome on having basically overcooked it and re-thought it so many times that it just became something they all needed to sit down and finish. I think that's a pretty good description of what we ended up with, it sounds like the band is a bit tired and couldn't drum up enough passion to go as deep as they would have liked. Also, being that they have endless amounts of time to spend in the studio, they simply over-thought it and ended up with a lukewarm effort. I can still enjoy it for its meditative flow and ability to help me tune out the world around me, but it's not anywhere close to a great Tool record.

You bring up a wide variety of points, many of which are good while I few I feel are nitpicky (i.e: the Pneuma complaints are a bit rough because apart from 7empest, I think it’s the best track on the record), but you are valid in many areas. I give the record a 6.5 or 7 out of 10 personally but I give your review a 10 because it’s informative and actually quite well rounded.

I love the mature direction Tool sought after. They aren't trying to sound super youthful here and I prefer that than a band from their heyday repeating what they've always done. This was a beautifully recorded album and the interplay between the group is really tense and emotive. It's like a 8 for me. Edit: If Tool decided to do a black metal album Anthony would've given it way a higher score.

that edit makes zero sense and is just childish. Anthony has criticized black metal albums before and gotten shit for it. feel free to disagree (I have before; usually I like albums more than he does, because I don't have to listen to music I dislike for a living), but that's a dogshit way to think about how people with dissenting opinions where they are all just playing for a different team. if you genuinely think that, I don't think you are very familiar with him. he has reviewed genres positively, negatively, etc., so it's pretty hilarious when devotees of one band get all angry and say, "oh, you should just stick to THIS subgenre!" ... and then devotees of that subgenre get livid at a review of his and say to stick to a different genre instead.

Gotta say it does take a few very careful listens to appreciate the fact that the composition and execution is the polar opposite of boring - it's amongst their most stimulating and complex work. If an artists intention is literally to make an awful record, do you rate it a 2 out of 10 because it's bad, or higher because they accomplished what they set out to do? I myself would rate that Bizkit record a 7/10. It's not my taste, but I can see what they were going for and I think that they accomplished most of what they tried to do.

Tool has sadly lost an important element: that touch of punk or angst that gave them bite, rawness, and creative energy. Lateralus is an amazing album, but it shifted the band in a direction that made them too self-indulgent in their sophisticated-cosmic-fine-art. Yes, it's wonderful to reach Heaven, but you have to keep a bit of the Hell too, or else you flatten into repetitive, stale, uninspired territory. We don't want just the happily ever after, we want the struggle through the muck in order to reach it.
@richardrisley2882

This right here. That album simultaneously made the band what they are and ruined them at the same time. 10,000 days felt like they over thought making Lateralus again and made an overall boring album. This album, they decided to make the songs long, and people will mistake long songs for being "good" songs.
@WorldGovernmentGeoInstitut
@WorldGovernmentGeoInstitut 2 жыл бұрын
I'm the other way around. I think Tool had its pinnacle of experimentation with Lateralus and then the experimentation started decaying to the point where they weren't an experimental band anymore, it all came down to FI which feels like it was standard alternative metal with very long songs. Worst thing is that you could at least enjoy 10k days as a legit album made by musicians that just wanted to get together and write some songs (even if they were a bit too long), FI didn't have any of that at all, it felt like it had no direction and didn't know what they were doing and had the worst of Lateralus as well - which I think is kind of a pretentious album at times but it still feels coherent at least -, the whole "let's make 12 minute songs because that'll make us look cool" felt way too forced IMO.

Tool isn't self indulgent, it's a band that teaches through their music. And while they might have lost their "bite and angst" even though I think they haven't. I see this as a growing point in their career, they make more songs that uplift, grow, and teach others. They've grown, they aren't a bunch of pissed of 20 year olds, even though I think they were still amazing when they were. They've just grown, like a student grows into a teacher.
