I just see my origins. Not my ancestral origins per se, just the origins of what I am: human. And I am surrounded by other humans. Humans hate, but I don't hate. It makes me feel alien. But to avoid the deep pits of arrogance, I realize I am also human, and that I can also hate. Pure as I begin, move by will alone, I choose to build. Others choose to destroy. Just sides of the same coin. I may not see shapes and geometry from music without psychedelics, but I perceive concepts and connections as if those things had a separate sensory organ. In other words, it's just humbling to be reminded, that I am just human. Keyword: just. There's nothing special about being human, but our choices can be special anyway. Move by will alone.

@augustgreig94204 жыл бұрын
@Travis B What the fuck are you talking about? "Crawl Away" and "Swamp Song" are both great songs, but even if you don't like them, you couldn't remove them from the album because they flesh out the theme of the album, which is about control, specifically the feeling of helplessness when you dony have control. And they use water as a metaphor for this. "Undertow" is a fantastically daring concept album, because most concept albums focus on telling a narrative, but this one focuses on exploring an emotion and all the consequences of that, from broken relationships, resentment, drug abuse, relapse, child sexual abuse, coerced sodomy and loss of faith. "Crawl Away" is about losing someone and having no control over the fact that they are leaving, despite doing everything you can to make them stay. And this leads to wanting to kill them if you can't have them. Or you can read it as wishing you could be the one to betray them instead of vice versa, thus restoring your sense of control. "Swamp Song", I believe, is very obviously about addiction, but could be about any self destructive behavior, including a toxic abuser who hurts anyone they're in a relationship with. And again, here we see the water metaphor, with the swamp, bog, wading and quick sand. He is saying, "Don't follow me, or it will destroy you," but ultimately, when he realizes they won't listen, his feelings turn to anger, as they did in "Crawl Away" and as they often do on the album. That's why he calls them a "dumb ass belligerent fucker, I hope it sucks you down." Again, not only does he not have control over what's happening to him, he also has no control over the person who's following him in. And water again is the metaphor for this. So you see, these two songs are indispensable to the album. In the same way, "Fear Inoculum" is vital for setting the tone on that album.
@augustgreig94204 жыл бұрын
@Travis B First of all, this album is "10,000 Days". Second, I've heard other people parrot your same response, and it makes zero sense. I couldn't find anything on "Fear Inoculum" that sounded like they were retreading old material. Yes, it still has a distinctive style, but that's great. If the album had sounded nothing like them, people would complain way worse. And anyway, the time signatures and polyrhythms on the album are completely unique, unlike anything they've ever done before. In fact, the album actually strays away from their previous work by not building songs around a riff, but instead the songs are built around different rhythms. "Pneuma" is a fantastic example of this, where during the intro the drums actually foreshadow the melody that is to come, not just the rhythm but the drums are also playing the notes of the melody, which is really amazing and not something I remember ever hearing before. The way time signatures and rhythms and polyrhythms are used on this album is really amazing. "Invincible" is a great example of this. The songs has these moments where the guitar, bass and drums are all playing in different time signatures, but as they repeat, they eventually catch up with each other so they land on the same beat, at which point the drums change time to match the guitar and bass before they all stop and allow for silence to take over before bursting forth once more playing together in a perfect 4/4. All of the off beat stuff before builds a tremendous amount of tension so that when we hit 4/4 it feels amazingly satisfying. Something very similar happens in "Pneuma" during the verse which builds up to the chorus which actually doesn't have any lyrics, kind of like "Seven Nation Army". The verse is offbeat and tense and it builds this pressure which is release when the chorus kicks in. It took me a little while, but after listening to this album a lot, I do believe it is their greatest album of all time. It seems that this is the peak they've been building toward all along and they've finally perfected their sound. "Pneuma", and "Invincible" are definitely two of the greatest songs they've ever written. "Fear Inoculum" and "Descending" are both great and fit perfectly in their places on the album. "Culling Voices" appears to be the weakest among them out of the gate, but again, when you view it from its place on the album, it fits perfectly. And "7empest" is just a straight up jam, something unlike anything we've ever heard from them before. I can dance to that song. The album is a 10/10.

Well, once you discover Tool, you might discover other things that achieve the same thing, differently. Difficult to explain, and who am I to put you on a path of discovery? There's so much out there, between you and me combined, more playtime than we'll get to live. I am serious, there's soooo much out there. To name a few things, if you can detach yourself from the choice of instrument: Heilung, Caligula's Horse, Ayreon, Shpongle, Ott, Plini - there's sooo much out there. With equal depth, meaning, soundscapes. If Tool has given me anything, it's this sudden opening of so many doors of discovery. So many paths of musicality, just out there, awaiting individual discovery. If I could go back in time, and slap my face with a lesson, it would be to not let temporary preferences get in the way of anything. Today, it's way too easy to miss out. The title of this track is a play on words. It’s a play on the word “intension,” meaning the core/internal matter of a given subject (in this case the subject would be free will) and/or a determination to do something in an archaic sense. “Intension” is a homophone of “intention,” which is essentially synonymous with will.

There's nothing outside of reality that reality can be compared against. It's like a self-contained infinite house of mirrors with no original definite image. So, since it can't be any one thing in particular, it takes on the shape of everything and it just dreams forever. Don't worry about anything, you are entirely natural and belong here and the character you've told yourself you are doesn't really exist but the deep down part of you will be doing this forever, the good and bad. Every now and then throughout eternity you'll wake up again and remember all this stuff and other times you'll get lost in all the stories. Be cool, shut the fuck up, and pay attention!

I intuit I love so fucking profound filled with love and gratitude I can’t even speak about it properly but I know it’s there and I want angels to pick me up for a prayer I’ve been praying for . I get that we’re extended image of god . I want to experience myself for what I AM . In this lifetime then come back and lift humanity up knowing I can do all things . I am 15 and I discovered tool 3 years ago in a long car ride and I love them because of my high spirituality and because when I was little I would astral project to all these places and i have memories of these places vast and far away and this band makes my head say "you're so close to ascending to home" and this band makes me feel like I am not alone and that there are people that understand me and this band makes me feel like I'm closer to understanding what life really is the roots of it. I'm sorry if I didn't make any sense it's hard to talk about this without typing for like 6 hours

Let the gift flow through you. Every gift has a price and you may or may not know that yet. My price was the void would look at me. Study as much as you can. Even outside of school. Ik you shouldn’t let yourself be grasped by materialistic things, but it isn’t what you’re learning. It’s what it’s doing. Your brain will develop and become healthy. With a healthy mind you can see to make your body healthy. With that you can allow your true potential to show. Grow the seed that will grow into the answer if you so choose to feed a nurture it. Then plant it in others. Don’t give the answers away. Ik it’s hard to do but when you just say it, people think you’re crazy. Also don’t believe in just one thing. Take everything into consideration and will it together. Find the medium. See this side and the other together. Wether or not the world we’re living in is real or not. It’s still part of the one we don’t see.

A couple years back I was coming down from a massive acid trip. My friend played this song and I hadn’t listened to Tool in years. I kept trying to remember the name of the song I was hearing. I knew I knew the song. But I couldn’t remember the name. The fact I couldn’t remember the songs name and the power of the song combined forced me into a state of incessant sobbing. It was honestly embarrassing. I could not stop crying for almost 15 minutes. What an incredible song.

@@nacazcultx No I understand that, but the artists were older when they made this so I think of it as older.. and when I'm drunk as hell staring at the 10,000 days album art I like to think it's the man from Lateralus whose third eye has opened for 10,000 days and he's aged 10,000 days with all the knowledge of the universe and is now some sort of ancient deity because of the weight of that knowledge. You know what’s crazy? 10,000 Days is tied for my favorite album of all time (With Revolver by The Beatles).. I’ve listened to the big tracks off 10,000 Days around 700-1000x. But somehow I’ve never ever listened to Intention. I figured it was a filler track and could safely be skipped after hearing the first 10 seconds. I’m stoked to hear a new old Tool song for the first time in 10 years 😂

I wouldn't say Tool is the world's greatest band. There is no one greatest, really. To me they are MY greatest band, my favourite tool (hehe pun) to use while self exploring. A perfect blend of the hard, earhtly rock and the calm, spiritual "out of this world". A yin and yang of a band. They are very grounded, yet stare at the night sky and reach as far as they can. They help me to reach further.
