I think time signatures are tool's secret weapon (besides the incredible lyrics). They change time signatures completely, while Metallica just changes tempos. Tool might use four or five separate time signatures in one song without using 4/4 one time. Go ahead, just TRY to snap along with the snare drum sometime. You'll know what it feels like to be a white kid trying to dance.
@cigarsguitarsandatopshelfb9466 жыл бұрын
John Lopez ha. Schism is nuts for time signature changes. Drummers nightmare. Totally tuned rotos. Guitar players, don’t worry about it, lol!

I've been listening to Lateralus for at least 15 years, it's probably the one song I've listened to more than any other piece of music in my life except maybe the alphabet song lol, and there are two sections where despite years and years and years of practicing and trying to snap along with the song and I just can't do it. It's the hi-hats right around 'I embrace my desire to....' and the 4 count bass, with a snare snap right after that comes right after it. Each time it's different than the time before it and I can't master it and I love it so much.

Your reactions so perfectly illustrate why TOOL is in my Top 3 bands of all time. I ditched school one time to see them do a free show in the middle of the day at a theater, trying to promote the upcoming release of their 2nd. album, Undertow. Shortly after, they blew up and I was watching them at huge festivals and arena's.

Damn, lucky bastard. I paid like 300 bucks for 5th row tix in 2006. We were right in front of Adam Jones. It was worth every penny.

Yeah I saw them grinding the show circuit for the first album then they came close to me right after Beavis and Butthead had Sober on their show and it was like a volcanic eruption from album to album getting bigger each song each release. Now I went to see them this year a d really miss the small venue show where Maynard is out front sweat flying and tribal backpiece exposed. Not seeing him kinda sucks.

That middle interlude part that’s Adam Jones using a “talk box” and his guitar. He’s basically speaking into it and playing giving that wahhh sound. I’ve seen them live and he does that part really good👍
@ToolFist5986 жыл бұрын
Yep pretty amazing stuff...... Here is a little more about how it works.... A talk box is an effects unit that allows musicians to modify the sound of a musical instrument by shaping the frequency content of the sound and to apply speech sounds (in the same way as singing) onto the sounds of the instrument. Typically, a talk box directs sound from the instrument into the musician's mouth by means of a plastic tube adjacent to their vocal microphone. The musician controls the modification of the instrument's sound by changing the shape of the mouth, "vocalizing" the instrument's output into a microphone. And here he is actually doing it..... kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIevgausZZeenKM
@ToolFist5986 жыл бұрын
Yep, basically... If you watch the video I linked you can see Adam opening and closing his mouth to change the sounds.

Towards the last half of the song the band all splits off in separate directions and are all playing independent from one another. Then, the song comes full circle and when Maynard sings the word, "unity.", they all meet and start playing together again.

My favorite Tool song from my favorite Tool album (sorry Lateralus and Aenima). 10,000 days is just something special. Ultimately the topper is the wings for Marie songs -- especially part two, ("10,000 days.") It's only fitting that it's not only the album title track, but it's what sets it apart from everything else. Like God damn that song is powerful. Only song that has ever made me tear up...still does every time I listen to it..and I'm a 30 year old dude. Fuckin masterpiece of an album.

Nothing can bring people together the way music can. We want people to enjoy the same things and perceive it the way we do. We feel those goosebumps at the same time and it connects us in that way. It's like when you recommend a song to a friend and they truly love it as much as you do, that shared feeling amplified by enjoying it together is almost as good as it gets.

"Jambi" is an Indonesian Province in Sumatra, which was once part of a powerful kingdom with a rich sultan who lived an opulent lifestyle. The setting reinforces the message that family and friends are more important than wealth... which is a great interpretation, but it turns out that this song was inspired by the kid's TV show Pee Wee's Playhouse, which had a genie character named Jambi. At a drum clinic in Kansas, Tool Drummer Danny Carey explained that when Justin Chancellor came up with the bass part, Carey thought it sounded like Jambi's chant on the show: "Mekka-lekka hi mekka hiney ho." Lead singer Maynard James Keenan wrote lyrics about a genie and making wishes, and the song was born. While it could appear to have deeper meaning, Carey claims it was simply a joke. >>

I'm enjoying your reactions. As someone who has listened to metal/rock my whole life, Tool is by far my favorite band. Check out Aenema. My favorite lyrics by the band yet.

I have felt those goosebumps many many times my friend. Tool is on a different planet. You’re just scratching the surface.

It's so great to get to experience someone's introduction to Tool and see it immediately resonate with them.

The Salival version of Pushit gives me goosebumps throughout the song. I'm a huge Floyd and Zeppelin fan for giving me goosebumps like that too. For some reason, I have such a weakness for music that it starts with goosebumps and then choke up and literally cry because the music is so good. Tool - Salival - Pushit (live). Do it. And then check out Since I've Been Loving You by Led Zeppelin, the studio version. That song live was never really that good. And The Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd. I cry at the sound everytime.

I wish I could send you to a tool concert. It’s a life changing experience. You will have tears in your eyes and goosebumps and won’t know what the hell just happened to you. Another thing to note is that Tool needs to be listened to in totality. They write their music so that it takes you on a journey. Your kinda on it now but if you listen to say 10,000 days in totality without interruption, you will soon understand what they are trying to tell you. Tool is not just a band of talented musicians, they want to open your eyes. Love the reactions man. It’s great to see someone who genuinely opens their heart to music and allows music to do what it wills. Especially with tool. You don’t listen to tool, you experience tool.

Dude you'll go bananas for the Grudge. The best single word to describe that song is powerful. It drops in hard out of nowhere

I LOVE watching your face while you hear this! I still feel it every time I hear them. Their shows are INCREDIBLE. If noone has mentioned...listen with quality headphones bc all that detail gets elevated. Why we wait 10 years for album drops.
