The Fibonacci sequence is where each number is the sum of the two preceding it. The first few numbers are 1-1-2-3-5-8-13... If you follow the syllable break down of the first verse it will follow the Fibonacci sequence. The crazy thing is if you graph the Fibonacci sequence you end up with a spiral which is mentioned a lot at the end of the song (Spiral Out) This could probably be explained a little better by someone else but hopefully I gave some clarification to what you read at the beginning. I'm not the biggest Tool fan but I love me some Lateralus. If you haven't done Schism yet you really should.

I think pretty much all of them have formal classical music training. I know Danny's an amazing Jazz drummer and plays jazz far more than rock. I think that's why they're so unique. There's a lot of classical almost orchestral arrangements and time signatures used in their music

TOOL are unlike any other band. Meaningful, often dark lyrics wrapped in masterful musicianship. There are lots of bands that try to do what they do. Some succeed in their own way. None will ever do it as well as these guys do.

Dude this is one of my favorite tool songs...... but if someone else mentions the fibonnaci sequence of the lyrics in this song again to me, im gonna lose it. Lol the time sig is not in that sequence but the lyrics are laid out that way. Great great song. Good video dude, i envy anyone who hears tool for the first time.

Fun fact, Maynard said this was a clumsy or obvious attempt using the Fibonacci sequence, which is crazy if you just get to know the work that goes into the drumming alone. ✌

Just an observation if you don’t mind. While wearing headphones people have a tendency to speak way louder than they normally would. Your listeners are wearing headphones as well, probably turned up pretty loud. So I think you might understand where it could be a problem. Great reaction though! Spiral out 🤘🏻

Figured I might add some insight into what this video was trying to get across during the song (annoyingly) *[c&p'ed from a previous comment left on a different video, and then edited here to expand a bit further on a few things.]* The song is heavily influenced by a mathematical sequence of numbers known as the Fibonacci Number Sequence. The sequence goes as follows... 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, ... The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it. Interestingly, this can also be plotted out graphically, as a spiral...and not just ANY spiral...but a very specific one, which can be found literally everywhere in nature...for example, the curl in a chameleon's tail, the seed pattern in the middle of a sunflower (and many other plants follow this spiral as well) , to the way hurricanes are shaped, allll the way up to the Spiral Arms of our Milky Way Galaxy. In the opening verse, Maynard is describing the beginning of life, and the process of gaining vision, at fist everything is black, then you are born and slowly contrast becomes necessary to discern, so whites come into play, more like light vs dark...and then once our light receptors (Rods) are formed in the retina, Cones begin to develop, and the first 'colors' we see are in the longer wavelength of light, and so reds and yellows. There are also other interesting correlations to this section, but im sure they have been covered in the comments by now. SO, check this out Black (1) Then (1) White are (2) All I see (3) In my Infancy (5) Red and yellow then came to be (8) Reaching out to me (5) Let's me see (3) (its an ascending and desceding Fibonacci number sequence going by syllables, also, just like a spiral, growing larger, then shrinking) and again with the bridge : As below, so above and beyond, I imagine (13) Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8) Push the envelope, (5) watch it bend (3) This song also has three general time signatures within the 'main chorus' section, one in 9, then in 8 and then in 7....987 is one of the numbers in the Fibonacci Sequence. In the end, this song attempts (and succeeds) in highlighting the interconnection of all and everything, as below, so above. From the twist in our double helix DNA to the very shape and form of our galaxy, the pattern runs through it all. After making this point, he urges us to embrace our humanity, To feel inspired , To fathom the power, To witness the beauty, To bathe in the fountain...to live life as a human, but still be aware of our oneness with the entirety of reality, our Divinity. The song ends with a strong and clear message to open yourself up to the universe, and to enjoy the ride while we are here.
