During that long interlude, when we're explicitly being told to feel the rhythm and feel connected, they are literally combining two rhythms that are off from each other by a beat. This causes the hi-hat, and then the snare to sound like they are drifting backward in the sequence, which of course means they come back around and line up correctly every few cycles. This song is Tool's final exam for Tool fans. They tell you to embrace it, while pushing reality through itself, and if you can manage to do it, you will witness the beauty, and fathom the power, and bathe in the fountain.

When I clicked on the video I was wondering how in the hell the video was going to be 45 minutes long. Then I watched your brain break. Now to really blow your mind. The base of the song is 5/8. However, during the chorus they repeat a cycle of a single measure of 9/8 one of 8/8 and one of 7/8 before repeating that pattern 3 times. The 9/8,8/8,7/8 cycle is another reference to the Fibonacci Sequence with 987 being the 16th number in the sequence. Then let’s mention that at the beginning of the song, the first verse begins at 1min 37 seconds. Converted into a decimal it reads 1.618 “The Golden Ratio”. 🤯

I am normally not one to enjoy seeing people suffering, but this was highly entertaining! Lateralus has always been my favourite Tool song (and album, for that matter) and yes, it’s a bit too clever for its own good, but what a superb piece of music! Tool play everything in drop d it is a guitar at the start, there's also more than just the syllables of the song that are part of the sequence the song uses the time signatures 9/8, 8/8, 7/8, 987 is a number in the sequence the songs working title was 987 which is where the idea to use the sequence came from, from the wiki: The time signatures of the chorus of the song change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8; as drummer Danny Carey says, "It was originally titled 9-8-7. Here's the kicker. While your brain is still recovering check this out. In a recent interview with Joe Rogan, Maynard now feels that his lyrics are stupid in this song, essentially calling it a "dick joke". 😳 He feels pointing out the sequence with lyrics was overkill and too easy, seeing as how the band was already doing it in their time signatures.

Adam Jones is GREAT for getting full effects to his sound. Playing between octaves, using 2 amps to get a fuller sound helps the Tool sound Jones said. One guitarist for their sound doesn't work without the doubled up amps and Jones' talent at chord arrangements and NOT staying within the box and Circle of Fifths. He'll take us outside and blow our minds!

David. I am usually here to write Lovebites comments but let me say this. I throughly enjoyed your reaction. I think this episode is the best! How entertaining! I didn’t know about Tool, not to mention Fibonacci sequence at all. I felt as if this whole reaction is a Zen riddle. In order to fully appreciate this song, you have to be very knowledgeable about things like theory of music and mathematics. I bought the Lateralus album the day it came out and I know exactly what you meant when you were talking about getting lost a few times during the song but still finding your way back. I'm sure a lot of Tool fans can relate. The extra layer of beauty of this song is that after spending time with it, you get to a point when you not only never get lost again, you can also hone in on any one thing a band member is doing like just the drum fills or just certain bass notes and no matter what you choose to focus on, you never miss a beat and never feel like you're about to be steered off course because everything will just sound natural. I'm by no means as knowledgeable about music and music theory as you are, so it was to great to hear your take on this track and hear you explain things that I understood in my own way after years of listening to this song even if I wasn't ever able to explain them musically like you can, if that makes sense.

The Fibonacci sequence is more than in the lyrics my man. Not going to deep here but google it because it's everywhere in the song. One of my favorite things is from an interview, and I'm not sure which member said it but when asked why the length of the song isn't in the Fibonacci sequence. The response in classic TOOL fashion was "You can't follow all the rules." which is what the song is about essentially. Great reaction David!

Back around 2005 my friend turned me onto a bunch of books while we were discussing spirituality. The ideas resonated with me. What they didn't tell me is that they were from Maynard's reading list. I had read these before I ever really listened to Tool. I found the band by accident while killing time at Best Buy, I saw Alex Grey's artwork on the cover and I remembered liking a song of theirs on the radio years before(46 & 2). After hearing the lyrics, Lateralus was like a church hymn. I had to go back and listen to his entire body of work. If anyone is interested in the book titles, leave a comment.

Watching you react to this song makes me realize the difference between just a plain lover of good music and a musician that habitually counts notes and patterns, analyses of every song. First time I heard this song as a layman, I was able to absorb all the aspects of the song without thinking too much; lyrics and vocals, and instruments, the entirety of the song, and I was able to FEEL the song because it is so sonically pleasing to my ears. It was an EXPERIENCE to behold, a journey of thoughts and visuals to say the least. Being high also enhanced the experience. LOL So I felt a little sad for you that weren't able to feel the way I felt when I first heard this song, but then again, I also understand that we're all different with our own unique levels of intelligence and perception based on our own individual life experiences. With that said, I'm sure you'll listen again and again, and you'll reach a point where you'll just be able to enjoy the song in it's entirety without breaking it all the way down. I have to say though, Maynard's genius lyrics makes me think about so many humanity related things. That is kind of a mindfuck in itself, because I often tend to "over think" about the plight of mankind, and I get a little lost, 'separating my body from my mind.' Universal mathematical paradoxical insanity...that's why I love TOOL...I really love this particular title too, Lateralus, the nature of being across two positions (to be laterally connected, like a lateral pass in American football) and the lyrics clearly portray the "Across" between emotion and logic, which is what we are...reminds me of Nietzsche in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, "Man is a rope between beast and over-man. Epic reaction video and pretty much sums up every time I listen to Tool. 23 years and counting and still blowing my mind wide open. It's as if I can't listen properly to anyone else after Tool, they seem to make anyone else inferior and I really don't want that to sound as harsh as it sounds. If you haven't already seen it, Polyphonic has a great video that goes over many of the ways that Tool used the Fibonacci sequence when composing this song. I highly recommend watching in your free time. Keep making these "reaction videos." They are actually informative unlike 99% of people who do this stuff. I watch your videos and genuinely learn something almost every single time.

Not only the syllables divisione follow the Fibonacci sequence, but also the duration of the song, the time in seconds when the various parts of songs begin ( when the singing starts for example), the time signature and the lyrics itself. Everything in this song is based on Fibonacci or the golden ratio. It's an amazing display of compositional skill.

@@thisfall5227 It was only a case initially when the song was called 789 based on the time signature changes. Then when they noticed that it was a Fibonacci number and realized that it could be interesting, they built everything else around the sequence. It's not random at all

One of the complaints of tnis album was you either love it or hate it, cause they did get too complexed! It loses some points ...I get it. I mean,, one issue with tool is they were learning and growing then just kinda ended up in their own ass....over time. I still love them.. This album was literally like parallels, spirals, grids, all The goddamn shapes, overlaying each other, backward and forward, and then made into a sound... into an album, that is still making a perfect circle to the center of my soul.

Tool reminds me of Steve Vai. Brilliant. But so complex at times it’s hard to enjoy. I love odd time signatures I can eventually find the “groove” to but sometimes tool is so odd just for the sake of being odd. It doesn’t work for me. But they have some tracks that are freaking awesome. Vicarious is one that I absolutely love

Dale - I pretty much agree with all of that. It's wankiness for the sake of wankiness. Not the amazing next level shit Tool fans claim it to be. Got to be one of the most toxic fandoms in music. Anyone who doesn't agree that Maynard is the second coming of Jesus is automatically treated like a pleb while they look down their noses at you claiming you're not intelligent enough to get it. The song is about embracing the randomness, so all these time signatures are representing that randomness and not predictibility of life, so it teaches to not overthink the signatures and complexity and just enjoy the ride, same goes for life

I'm teaching summer school to my college students, but it's online. To make it more interesting, I'm teaching rock and roll rather than conventional poetry. I just taught "Greatest Show on Earth." This will be the second song I teach. I think I'm going to blow their minds. I don't think they realize *how* complex rock can be.
