In the solo section, Danny plays a pattern with his right hand, starting with 5 drums, then 4, then 3, then 2 before before the double-bass comes in. You know something is coming with the tension that collapsing pattern is building, and then it finally releases with the thunderous basses and the richest fills of the song. It's utterly brilliant, and his live playing in this recording is terrifyingly close to the studio album, including all those fills. He composed those and placed them exactly where he wanted them. A true master. The rest of the album is equally amazing. Descending is actually my favorite track, but doesn't receive a lot of online attention. Headphones are a must.

Honestly Danny Carey breaks the rating scale in that yes he may be able to add more embellishments or arrange it differently so that technically it may have a more by the book structure but he didn't. He played it the way he did because that's the way he wanted it to sound. He's not playing at the max of his capabilities he playing the song the way it needs to played so that it has the desired effect. Tools music is planned to perfection and anything that do that seems less than perfect is actually perfect because it was purposeful and deliberate being done to create a specific energy, very much like casting a spell (metaphorically of course). Every little nuance has a purpose and can't be done any better because it can't be done any other way. To do it differently would change the recipe for the spell and it wouldn't work.

I've watched a bunch of videos over the years. You will see those drummers that have an arsenal of drums surrounding them like Neil Peart that have more drums and accessories than anyone can play for any song. Danny Carrey uses every single drum and accessory in his kit for this song. That's impressive because he hasn't just got a few extra toms, cymbals and double bass drums. He's got a lot of stuff there, and that impresses me because he uses ALL of it.

great reaction! in regards to the hihat placement, if i recall correctly, its because his kit was so big, that he experimented with it as a way to avoid crossing hands, and he liked it so much he kept it.

Watching musicians try to count Dannys time is always so funny. He plays unrestricted beyond time. His hi hat is where it is so he never has to cross his arms, so obviously brilliant.

David this is my first trip to your channel sir and you are in for a treat. Danny Cary is a master of his craft. That is a fact! You are in a band so I think you will get off on this video. We'll see!!!! Danny had a birthday recently, he is 63 years old. He has played the drums for around 50 of those years. I submit to you that the first part of this fine video is just Danny warming up. Later in this video he busts loose! My favorite part is coming up. At 21:44 or so! I think he is a one-man drum line! Very special.........

I know very little about drumming, other than just taking a passing interest as a music fan. But, I agree with all you said there. He is super technical, but not in a way that doesn't fit the song. He's not being extravagant, just for the sake of it. The rest of the band are great, but Danny takes them to a completely different level to your average band.

The super-power of Danny. His massive chops hit his kit as if dooming it to death - while also playing the drums like the most delicate instrument in honouring the composition with all the musicality in existence.

Thank you! I've watched several reaction videos to this, and I believe you're the first to explicitly freak out over the part that starts around 17:40. That stretch where Danny is doing the two totally distinct patterns with each hand, while slowly building on each, is probably the most "no way!" thing I've ever seen a drummer do. I know all about muscle memory and limb independence, but this is just a whole other level.

What I like this so much is that you can see how Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor are interactin.. Also Maynard. But for example at 4:57 (and 7:16) you can see how Adam is turning to look at Danny waiting for his next cue which is delivered at 7:19 where you can see Danny nodding to Adam when he hits the .. "drum" (I have no idea what these things are called). :) And you can see Justin getting ready at 7:41 just right of Dannys head.. This video is so good.

Dude. This is the best Pneuma reaction out there! So much of the depth of this song goes over the heads of other channels - like they don't even have the musical vocabulary to describe what they're hearing. Really admired your deep dive into his kit, the time signature, and the patterns on each hand. I've been obsessed with this song since it came out, and you really did it justice. Awesome video.

David - Nice take. Subscribed. Props for using both syllables, btw. I like the 9.5 because it allows for finding one instance of a "better" performance and upgrading to a 9.75. An old flame once said she had never met a David she didn't like. So far, she's been right. It's getting a little weird because at my age that's a lot of Davids. Keep smiling.

The whole song is in 33/4 and they use various ways throughout the song to get it. This took me 2 months every day for hours and hours to play this song - of course my fills are nowhere near his, and I still cant play the swiss-roll interlude part - and I never will! I rate him a 9.995 and fully agree, he is not of this world!!

@@CHRISCONTEPSS yes, so the main part is 9 + 5 + 9 + 5 + 5 = 33 then at 9:33 is 5 + 7 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 33, but there are more points at which they use different math for it. They use 4 ways to get it!

If you’re a bassist then you would absolutely love Justin’s work in this band. Even the early days with Paul was so funky and groovy. Give a listen to Prison Sex for some great bass playing, I’d say Forty Six & 2 but I’m sure you’ve heard that before like the rest of humanity 😆 but if you haven’t then that is definitely a shining moment in early TOOL bass playing.

Other way around actually. I only ever bought one Tool album and that was Undertow. I loved it, I loved every single track on the album. For some reason, and I can't explain why, I never bought any other Tool album after that. I think it's because I fell into my Dream Theater phase, which led me into a nearly 3 decade long prog rock obsession.

Personally, I count the verse-sum of 33/8 as 11+12+5+5 all over 8. I have seen great drummers chop the 33/8 cycle up differently - but this is how it is accented in my brain. And I totally agree - his polymetric fills are out of this world. To fill between polymetric shifts things only jazz-drummers do (Danny happens to have a degree in jazz before a prog-band came along with a drummer that never showed up). Regarding your high-hat placement rant - when he goes full ambidexter poly-rhythmic showing off his Indian Tabala know-how from studies in the middle section before he releases the tension back to 4/4 - one understands why he wants the left side uncluttered by a high-hat - his left arm is doing stuff over there and needs freedom of movement. But most - his drumming is so damned musical. Demonstrating that drumming is not only about driving BPM - as much as moulding tension while he almost describes the song on his crazy well-tuned kit. Here is a stressful job for us all. Be the roadie/rigger and tuner of Danny Carry's drum-kit between stadium gigs.
