I reckon you could get Danny to suffer sleep deprivation and then sensory deprivation, bring him out and have a sleep and within 10 minutes of being awake, if there was a ticking clock on the wall, he'd say - that clock is out by one hundredth of a minute. Lol. Nah, seriously though, he is a master of keeping time, not unintentionally flamming and can give every limb a different time signature/pattern. There are many drummer's in this world who are just as good but they're not in a band. They just modestly say - yeah, I can play drums pretty well. If you need a back-up drummer or a different direction, give me a shout. They then go home and play as good as the greats but don't know it.

The absolute master of polymetric, unique time signatures. It never gets old watching drummers try to figure out his time signatures and giving up. The complete heir to Neil Peart and it's easy to see his influence. This song is a complete showcase for him, and deservedly so. What might be more amazing is the fact that Danny is 58 yrs. old when this was recorded. Tool is simply an experience. Danny is simply one of the best drummers alive today.

I saw these guys back in 96 when Danny was 24 years younger. The man is still a beast but back then he looked like a statue carved from marble. He played the whole show in naught but a loincloth. During the infamous 46&2 solo he would hit the drums and snares so hard he would be busting sticks left and right, yet would fluidly grab another stick and keep going without missing a thing. Danny truly is something near inhuman.

I dont understand why Danny is not mentioned in the same breath as John Bonham and Neil Peart on a regular basis.....its a given, in my opinion he is the greatest ever. Yes, John and Neil are sublime talents but Danny shines on EVERY song. When you play zeppelin, people dont immediately pick up on the drums, yes there iconic licks and amazing solo work, but when you show people Tool, the first thing most people pick up on is how amazing Danny is. He stands out in a band where the other members are masters of their craft also and that says something. Every song is so different, how he comes up with so many different timings is unreal, as someone in another reaction the other day said, the metronome asks Danny what timing he is in! Oh yeah, love that tats! Good work. You are really gonna enjoy this band, they are the untouchables, they must make other bands question whether they are even writing music!

@@pablerry, no, Tool isn't mainstream. I believe it is because they're better than mainstream, it's beneath them. Yet if you were to ask Adam, Justin, Maynard or Danny where they think they fit into the music world, I've seen replies in interviews of answers such as - hopefully in a positive medium. We're just guys that love music and try our best to bring palatable music to the table. Maynard, well, Jim, says he has the freedom to have and still perform with A Perfect Circle and Puscifer and come back to the lads after a few years and they have some "ideas" and then come back in another few years and the previous ideas have been thrown away and they have improved stuff. The reason Pneuma took so long to get to the mastering stage was because of some Tool touring and they just do their own thing. No hurry. Just 4 great people. If someone was to injure themselves in view of either of them, they would not keep walking and say that is beneath them. They'd offer assistance. Just 4 awesome people. Bring them together musically and they're the band Tool but them together, they're just 4 guys in a room.

my drum teacher when i was a teen actually sat in with paige and plant once, and he would give me recommended viewing sometimes, anything from the awful cheesy movie drumline, which is tacky but man it made me wanna practice those rudiments, to danny careys segment on a dvd where he played through lateralus on his metal golden kit lol. he would always praise his posture and power, and the percussionist way hed play rather than a lot of metal drummers who will never let off the double kick drum. So i feel hes appreciated by drummers, much like thomas haake but, tool are just not as well known as bands like zeppelin so often overlooked by the mainstream.

I was at this show (Boston, MA). The vid is insane, live was even better. But having been there, seeing this video just brings home how amazing Danny is. I cannot fathom how he keeps track of everything. Skill and talent, of course, but there HAS to be some wiring in his skull us normal humans don’t have. I was at a different gig where Danny broke a drum head during a song, he was wailing on it so hard. Maynard stops everything while the tech replaced the head, and was like “almost 60 and still breaking shit.” Lol

Fun fact. Most bands play live with clicks and backing tracks to help them keep time and keep it together. Tool have never done this, in over 30 years of their career. They can just wing it because they're excellent musicians.

Because you asked about time signatures: Tool has a habit of changing up rhythms multiple times throughout a song. Lateralus had a 9-8-7 signature that kept repeating (which is the 16th step of the fibonacci sequence, which that whole song is written around).

When the verse starts they are resolving 33 over 8 in a pattern that one can count as 5 over 8, 11 over 8, 12 over 8 and 5 over 8 being looped. It is a theme that is reappearing - with the complexity that they shift where they place the accents of the polymetric theme. So it takes a while to get the headbanging from looking wobbly :O. Danny studied tabla drums with and Indian master for years (the masters of creating the craziest polymetrics and spin them polyrhythmically that may take 5 or more cycles to resolve itself). With the added complexity that Danny, of course, moves his arms independently to place his independently moving wrists-metrics over ever-changing drums and pads - like in the intermezzo building up in the middle there. His biggest trick is, however - making polymetrics feel so damned groovy and organic - instead of planned and calculated. Don't count. Just let go and feel it.

This was easily one of the 5 best concerts I’ve ever seen. He’s only wearing that Celtics uniform because Danny is a hardcore old school Lakers fan. This closed out set 1 and he came out for set 2 in a Lakers uni for the pure comedy of getting booed in Boston Garden. He was laughing his ass off going back to the drums to destroy for another hour. #1 concert though is Pearl Jam in like 2002ish at Great Woods in Massachusetts which I’ve heard Eddie Vedder considers one of their best shows ever. They encored Yellow Leadbetter and every band member left the stage and Mike McCready did a 10+ minute guitar solo that had people, myself included, in literal tears. And that was AFTER 3+ hours of perfect music.

Great video mate. 🤘🍺👍💜 I’ve watched all of the “Pneuma” reaction videos and to me, yours is the best. Too many cats out there try analyzing his varying time sigs and rarely do they get it right. You’ve got them all beat because you’re humble about what you know and do not know and this is very refreshing. Plus it proves that you’re the only one doing reaction videos that isn’t narcissistic. 😂 Answering your primary question about how much of this is muscle memory. A ton of it, but that’s still oversimplifying what’s going on. The muscle memory has to be there or you’ll never be in position to hit all of these notes, but the brain is razor focused because he has to think ahead to know when and where he needs to be when the changes happen. It’s mega difficult with Tool because the changes are so often. The polymeter section in the middle section is a perfect example. Watch his right hand throughout the entire section, and how the pattern changes. For example, at the end of that section he plays 5 drums with the right hand (all double strokes too, which is way harder) then he moves the pattern to 4 drums, then 3, then to 2 before the big punch. On top of that being insanely hard to play, it shows exactly how drummers can write to build energy and tension, leading up to a dramatic change. He narrowed it from 5 to 4 then 3 and 2 and that creates a vibe where it feels like the walls are closing in, and then BOOM! So it’s a ton of muscle memory but it’s also focus on the highest level. This video is a perfect instructional video for any and all drummers, and not just because of the complexity. The big lesson here is that Adam writes guitar riffs and he’s not thinking of a beat or time sigs at all (most guitarists write in 2’s, 4’s & 8’s) Adam just writes the riff that he wants with the notes that he wants, and the other members are able to analyze it, and then add their parts that enhance it. The point is for all musicians to focus on making the song as best as it can be. Don’t fiddle with the beat, don’t step on the melody, etc... and as complex as this song is, nobody in Tool is disruptive at all, they all work to enhance the song, the end. This is why members of Tool rarely can tell you what time sig apiece is in, that’s not how they write, which is how they end up with crazy sigs like 33/16. Another point that should be made is that most musicians read something like 33/16 and assume the added note falls at the end. It never is. Think 16th notes first of all, then think about how within a section they’ll add a note, then add another note, then remove a note, add another, subtract another throughout the pattern, and as you count it out you end up with an extra note. Yea, this is pure insanity on the highest level but what makes it even more mind blowing isn’t just that they can play to these odd time sigs, but they can come up with them in the first place. The polymeter section, again is a perfect example. Throughout that section Danny is using 4 limb independence, and each limb playing to a different time sig. That alone is nearly impossible to play, but the even harder part is being able to hear Adams riff and come up with a flow where all four limbs play different beats but they all end up in the same place, which is how Tool are able to write such smooth flowing pieces without using 4/4 or anything of the sort. And they’re not just math nerds crunching the numbers. If they were it would be hella jerky. It goes back to Adams original guitar riff and when they all add to it and enhance it, it’s as smooth as silk, despite the insane time sigs and 4 limb polymeters. Sorry for the long post, it’s pretty much required when analyzing this band. Again, great video. I’m now a proud subscriber. 👍🤘🍺 Have you done Opeth “Deliverence” yet? That’s another gem of a song with a mega versatile drummer, who’s not overplaying but it’s complex as hell, yet smooth as silk. The outro is as good as it gets.

I think you hit the nail on the head there, saying he's a whole sound of music himself. One of the most defining things I find in Tool songs is that, unlike other bands where you can recognise a song for it's guitar riffs, with Tool, it's the drums. They're not just a "beat" that's in the background, they're their own, living, fluid element that more often than not stands out above all of other other instruments.

Danny is the greatest drummer to date. People in older generations do not want to admit it, but he is. He definitely learned from and was inspired by the early drummers. But he is now the setter of the bar. In respect to all drummers, Danny is now setting the greatest technical and rhythmical bar in all history of mankind....And how old is he again?

So many tool songs are an amazing piece of music as just a drum solo. I wish Danny would release some drums only versions of their songs. BTW Johnkewdrums does some great covers of him.

Danny "Freak of Nature Poly Rythmn" Carey the absolute best, definitely up to my top 3 for awhile. What I dig most is how he is able to take us to such tribal spaces inside music we can relate to. As another one that is super interested in the drummms, I recommend you check out Meshuggah-Clockworks(the vocals can be abrasive for some, but thomas haake is worth it, Meshuggah-Bleed(same story), Animals As Leaders-Cafo(instrumental insanity, 3 piece with 2 8 strings and a drummer), Opeth-Ghost of Perdition(prog metal, excellent drums)! When I played percussion in marching band in High School, I played the quads and quints. For me, the vast majority of it was muscle memory. My body knew where it was in the marching set as well as where that meant I was in the music. You could have asked me to play a section by name but I wouldn't have a clue where that was. Put me on the field and march along and I knew exactly what I should be playing. My conscious brain was more of a passenger. Welcome to Tool my friend. :D

this song (as with many of TOOL songs, the timing changes, throughout.. This one, used 4/4, 14/8, 2/8, 5/8, 7/8 14/8 again, and so on.

The whole thing on muscle memory and such, the band has stated previously that with Danny they give him some leeway on live performances to toy around a little with his playing so long as it isn't so structurally different than they're used to so it doesn't throw off their timing, because Danny will get bored playing the same thing over and over each night - and you'll pick up on some of those small changes (different fill order from time to time, different fills completely - extended solos, but all still within an overall timing sum to be equivalent) if you hear a side-by-side of Danny's live playing against the album recording of the songs. Imagine that though, it's actually muscle memory that Danny is trying to avoid. He wants the songs to feel more fresh and unique each time, so instead of just relying on muscle memory, he'll make it *harder* on himself just to maintain the excitement of playing music.

Good stank face, someone should do a compilation video of all the reaction videos to this song with just the stank faces everyone pulls the first time that break down comes in. You're so right about how he's his own sound within the band, I play guitar (badly) and usually appreciate that and vocals the most, but it was actually the drumming that first got me into Tool. I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard the album Lateralus, and it was the drumming that pulled me in, I'd never heard anything like it before.
