Remember when Vin and Sori called Maynard a rapist based on one tweet (made by someone blaming multiple artists for multiple rapes), and they ran with it for multiple videos while still monetizing the content made by the "rapist" they were calling out? I wonder how many times you've asked Father to forgive your multiple sins. Oh well, get dat money I guess.

Maynard is spiritual but not a Christian. He has never claimed to be an atheist. He is offended by the audacity of humanity thinking it can interpret the unknown. He is more of an agnostic but with some level of spiritual beliefs.
@musicmademejester
@musicmademejester 4 жыл бұрын
That is definitely true, I agree 100% but Maynard has always said he wants people to interpret the lyrics they way they relate to them. Thats the great thing about Tool. Some people can relate to Pushit as an abusive relationship or some people interpret it as child abuse, Or the some interpret "H" being about a relationship with family or some about drug abuse. Yes, Maynard may have a specific thing he is writing about but I like to think about songs songs differently and thats fine. BTW Vape on! "It was an interesting thing for Maynard to sing about, I thought, because I feel like he's, from what we've seen, kind of made it explicit that he doesn't want any parts of religion and all that, so then for him to say these things ..." Well ... he's not religious, but he's made it pretty clear that he's very spiritual, and I feel like that's what this song is about. It doesn't reference any particular religious beliefs, it's more about the idea of things and people being connected and interwoven together, and people being asleep to the truth and "bound down" in their physicality. It's a call to wake up to your spiritual truth, which doesn't necessarily mean religion.

I didn’t really interpret this as religious at all. I saw “wake up child” as a call to be self-aware and enlightened, and the “one breath, one word, one spark” to be the idea that we are all in essence sharing the same life energy and all live and die the same way, through the same process. Pneuma means soul in Greek.

I think these late night sessions aren't conducive to good reviews for a band like tool where you need utmost concentration. The fact Sori tries to conceal a big yawn halfway through the song feels indicative of a problem with pushing content through at a rate that's not sustainable (considering family commitments, work etc etc). Maybe I'm reading things wrong. I obviously couldn't say for sure. Ps, as others have mentioned: spirituality doesn't have to mean religious.
@ji_su

13:23 That part where he says "Wake up child release the light" and repeats the word "spirit", I have a different interpretation of that that I haven't seen anyone else talk about yet. My take on that part is it's coming from the perspective of some kind of supernatural being whether it's a god, angel, or some kind of spirit responsible for taking someone's spirit into the afterlife or making sure they reincarnate into a new body. I know Tool are getting older and they have said in interviews that getting old/reaching the end of one's life is a theme with this album, plus it's been a recent theme in Maynard's lyrics (for example the song "Autumn" by Puscifer), I think what that line could be is that entity telling someone that their time is almost up and that this life is actually a dream and death (i.e. releasing the light) is them waking up and moving on to whatever the next step is, either the afterlife or reincarnation. The repeating of the word spirit is that entity calling the person who is about to die, trying to wake them up, urging them to give up the ghost/step into the light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. That's just my thoughts on it.

@@VinAndSori Thank you. The song also makes me think wouldn't it be weird if as soon as you die in your current life you immediately wake up in another life as a baby being born with absolutely zero transition besides momentary blackness and a disembodied voice saying "Wake up, child!", where you fall asleep to this life and almost immediately wake up in the next life....and just think maybe a baby, who cannot speak, can vividly remember their past life, but gradually as they get older they forget, and by the time they can talk they have completely forgotten it which is why they can't pass the info on to the rest of us...that would be crazy as shit. This song has definitely pulled me down some rabbit holes, lol.

My interpretation of this song has been that Maynard is trying to explain that, when all is said and done, we are all the same. Made of the same stuff, and that we all are capable of looking at the world in the same way and with wonder in our eyes. It's a connecting song, there's a lot of hatred for others in the world at the moment, and remembering the messages in this song are a way to connect to others...

As far as I'm concerned he is talking about the Big Bang (or the "Universe from nothing), as in we were all created from one tiny point, one spark, one "word". It's not religious, although it could make religious people think that it is. This is a DMT song.... when I listened to this on DMT I cried. The beauty and truth is beyond measure. Also, DC's drumming is like the creation of the universe itself, and by his drum fills about 2/3rdsof the way through it sounds like the creation of galaxies, super nova, black holes etc. Everything is twisting in on itself whilst exploding in the creation of all that is (which erupted from a singularity). He is asking us to remember where we came from because when we DO remember that our troubles and worries melt away.

Important to note that there is eastern symbology being used here as well. In Buddhist meditation your focus on the breath is what ultimately leads to to enlightenment. The line about being one word also reminds me how it’s said that all of the massive amount of teachings and writings of Buddhism can be summarized is one word, "Om". This word with no meaning, that is made of breath. The idea of being one with god in Buddhism is slightly different in that it’s said that we are all one, humans, earth, god, the devil, imagined ideas, the physical universe, everything and nothing.

I took nothing religious from this song! Sure his mother was a strong practicing Christian, and Maynard was raised Christian, but he is no closet Christian. He’s speaking about spirituality. It’s narrow minded to say this energy, this spirit, this thing we all are can be summed up by some religious creed.

The release of this album spawned two distinct groups of people. The elated and the contrarians. The elated approached the album with positive anticipation, and mostly reviewed it as such. The contrarians approached the album with a “prove it to me” attitude, whilst knowing they were never going to highly rate it, as a punishment to Tool for the waiting period. Clearly you guys are in the second group, despite not having to wait at all, being that you’re 5 minute fans. The songs you’ve handed out 10s to lately and you begrudgingly give this a 9.3!?! Focusing only on the lyrical content and even ignoring the musical quality of the song. This whole punish Tool with impossible expectations thing is bad enough, let alone coming from 5 minute fans such as yourselves, it’s childish schoolyard bullshit.

This album was decent. It just got boring really early into it. They played it safe to me on this album. And that's fine. But it's not what I was expecting after 13 years. I wanted something refreshing, but it just came off as b sides or riffs brushed aside after 10,000 days.

Agree, they seem determined to dislike Tool now, I think being overly influenced by certain elements of their listeners, which is disappointing. Not a bad reaction overall, but yeah the crap they give 10's to and then this ... hard to reconcile. For me, Tool has their own scale & any of their music can only be rated on that vs other of their songs (maybe they are doing this to some degree as well subconsciously, but still this is at least 9.8 on Tool scale) - totally unfair to rate nearly anything else against the quality of Tool's discography - they are the genius student who breaks the class curve.

I pictured more of any person who is going through life lethargically, seemingly w/o purpose, or one who gives no thought to a life outside of the body, who doesn't create, who has no empathy to others. That's who I imagine those words being spoken too, "child, wake up, child, release the light, wake up now child". If you consider A Perfect Circle's song: and compare the lyrical context, I see a connection there.

You folks completely lost the meaning. It’s not about religion at all. Our spirit is infinite. And what you don’t remember is that your spirit has lived many many other lives before this one. The source of your consciousness has been lost on you. Our spirit is plugged into this physical realm. Our spirit is what’s driving these bodies we’re in. We are spirit bound to this flesh…this guise, this mask, this dream. But bound to reach out beyond this flesh. Wake up, remember. It’s not about religion at all. Religion doesn’t exist. It’s a human creation. A story. A rumor. The truth is, each and every one of us have a spirit, a soul, a pneuma. And we’re all tiny pieces of a much larger consciousness. You just forgot. We all did.

I don't think he's ever claimed atheism, in fact he's said for years that if you don't believe in anything your art is probably s@!%. He borrows from a lot of traditions for his imagery, but he's pretty clear on being non-religious. I think that's where intellectual / spiritual humility comes in: you can believe that there is a "beyond" without needing to "know" or "define" it.

IMO, the “Child Wake Up” line is referring to us, as the human race. Sometimes we think we’re the only life that’s inhabited this world, even though we’ve only inhabited this world for a minute fraction of time. He’s telling us as a people to wake up before we face our own extinction.If you have time go watch his last interview with Joe Rogan.

Sat Nam 🙏, in Sanskrit language breath (Pneuma) is called String - String which binds material dimension with beyond. Body, and any other physical matter, cannot exist without its connection to beyond because its source is beyond. So everything breaths in its own designed way. We actually do not know at all what is breath, we just feel the sensation of air passing thru our respiratory organs so we think its breath, but in reality its much much more. Once the string is broken, body just collapses and you become disembodied, your perception rises manyfolds because 5 senses are not obscuring the reality anymore. BUT all the bodily tools which we were using thru the lifetime are gone, most notably discriminatory part of the mind, so what remain are tendencies and you continue to move by them. As majority of people are identified with their body for their whole human life time, initial tendency is to get back in it, but it is impossible as that body is not capable to sustain life anymore (in many cultures first thing what people do with dead bodies is bring together the legs, even tie up the big toes, as between the legs is the path where life wants to get back into the body). Most of the “enlightments” (seeing the reality as it really is) if someone is conscious enough happen in this moment. Conscious contact with other disembodied and divine beings becomes possible. So it is very important you increase your perception and open yourself to truth before string is broken, while you still have discriminatory part of mind (still be a human - Lateralus), otherwise risk of delusion is high and you can’t retain balanced connection with the source for long, you fall back away from source again and by tendencies reach out to available womb to be born again as human being. Time and again, game restarts. If accumulated karma is very bad (killers...), this process can be very suffering in its delusion (hell?) and you may be even incapable of reaching the human womb, so you fall further down. If accumulated karma is generally good, this process can be very pleasant (heaven?) but it is still delusion and in one moment you need to re-born. Fortunately nature designed several levels of screens, so we don't remember our previous human lives, otherwise our mental structure would collapse as most of the people do not have that mental strength to discriminate between many mixed memories. Unfortunately with some people these screens are not working, so there are medical records where people with split personality disorder had even up to 30 split personalities (30 lifetimes mixed?). DON'T RAISE YOUR PERCEPTION BY CHEMICALS, VERY IMPORTANT as by it you are skipping many necessary preparatory steps, and risk is high to collect bad karma, even if experience is pleasant it may lead to delusions and certainly addiction. Then how to raise our perception? - do it naturally, slowly, step by step, daily discipline, pay attention to life, include life, exclude psychological dramas, enjoy in silence, listen the music, enjoy in arts, eat healthy, avoid nerve stimulants (coffee, alcohol, tobacco, chilly, sweets), take care of body as it is foundation for strong mind, be active but not hyperactive, look into the sun when UV rays are low (early morning, late afternoon), enjoy in Moon's reflections (its romance with the Sun), be grateful to Cosmos for keeping you and all the planets and stars in place, choose carefully your relationships, don’t sleep with anybody just because you can, respect other life, kill and eat only what you really must... simply LIVE, and remember always THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS DEATH, DEATH IS A COSMIC JOKE, DELUSION OF OUR LIMITED MIND, THERE IS ONLY LIFE AND LIFE! Sat Nam 🙏

You are correct sir. In my opinion it's not religious. He is also describing how we all erupted from one point, one spark, one word... the Big Bang... we all exploded into creation from what was basically NOTHING, a void before the Universe existed. Our troubles and worries are nothing, they mean nothing. This is obviously explained in the "One foot nailed down" line. If we could rip that nail out we would have the understanding of both feet leaving the ground. A Birds eye view of reality.

Hey guys. I know you probably don't read comments often with the prolific amounts of videos you do. But I have watched quite a few, and I watch the discussions you have after. This one seemed like a good one to post about why I like your videos, as a non-believer. The mormons, in their Book of Mormon, have two stories. One is of the travel of 'God's people' from the east to the new world, and they were given the knowledge of how to do seafaring, and a tool, called the Liahona, which was essentially a compass but always pointing in the direction they should go. They were tossed around but because they always had this tool, they could always find their way again. The other story is of an Iron Rod, something that you must hold fast to in order to reach your destination (the mormon celestial kingdom, essentially heaven), and releasing it would make it unlikely you found it again. Hence their saying 'Hold to the Rod'. This results in the combination of them in casual context (not doctrine): Liahona mormons, who believe your journey on earth will be filled with erring, mistakes, and lapses, but the word of God will always guide you home, and Iron Rod Mormons, who are strictly bound to doctrine because releasing doctrine will result in very possibly not finding their salvation. You guys seem very much like Liahona versions of whatever sect of Christianity you have chosen. By that I don't mean necessarily that -you- err often (though humility would say that we should all accept this), but that you make allowances for other people to wander. While you make judgments on stances or things you disagree with, you do it without fire and brimstone. I appreciate that, as a non-believer, and that's why I went through the trouble of typing this. You referred specifically to the change in spirituality of many non-believers, 'spiritual vs religious', and this largely has to do with something that I think you'd also appreciate. This is a little packed, philosophically speaking, but I will do my best to condense: Religion----->Truth

Vin I am a newer Christian and came across some book of enoch videos on a channel called woodward tv. I love how you both break the songs down and dig down on them. Just seeing if you may be interested in doing a reaction to one of them. I also think you may find them interesting. I know my church says that the bible is the truth of god and you could read these books as historical info but not as the inspired word of god. They do say that the Dead Sea scrolls are considered pseudepigrapha. Just wondering what your thoughts would be

Accordin To Gnosis There Are 3 Types Of Humans: 1) Hylics: From Greek: Hyle (Earth): matter, body, flesh, the lower order of the Three (bound to this flesh)...earthly pleasures, the material world!!! Unable to be saved since their thinking is entirely material, incapable of understanding the Gnosis. 2) Psychics: From Greek Psyché (Soul): partially initiated. Matter-dwelling spirits, "soulful". (see also: The Police - Spirits In A Material World)!!! 3) Pneumatics: From Greek: Pneuma (Spirit): fully initiated, immaterial souls escaping the doom of the material world via Gnosis!!!

In Stoic philosophy Pneuma also stands for the creative force of the human spirit. I never considered Maynard being an atheist "pure sang". It seems to me that he's influenced a lot by the work of Carl Jung (46 and 2) and that mysticism often played a part in Tools lyrical content.
