Being in a relationship without love, that is only sustained through the fear of leaving... You know if you stay it is a constant struggle to not fall into the madness, to keep your feet flat on the ground, if you fall into the madness you will disappear. You love the monster, but know it is a monster. Cannot leave to save yourself because you love their good side, will only end with you clawing away their throat because you need to kill their bad side. Borderline Personality Disorder...

Mine too but I liked it a little better when I thought he said “There’s no love in vain” but “there’s no live in fear” is a little more universally correct.
@partin25 Жыл бұрын
@@Henrydingus01123 Its actually taken from John 4:18 in the Bible. It says in the New King James version, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” I don’t believe in a God per se and I’m pretty sure the same goes for Maynard, but there is some good advice sprinkled in with all the mumbo jumbo bullshit. When a child has been molested and hurt over and over and has had to live in fear, like in the song, its hard for them to form the bonds of love. Another example is fearing people that don’t live or look like you and being unable to have empathy and love for those people because of ignorance and fear.

kotavu Yeah, that’s a haunting lyric. I always kinda read that line like... acknowledging that the person he is in an abusive relationship with is damaged too. That we’re all still children inside, and how abusers are usually acting out the abuse they themselves received. Because the next lines are, “What is this but my reflection? / Who am I to judge or strike you down?” It’s like his inability to fight back, because he sees the innocence inside his abuser. But this changes by the end of the song (at least the album version), when he gets to, “Remember I’ll always love you / As I claw your fucking throat away.” Like in the beginning he’s sort of complacent to the abuse he’s receiving, but by the end he’s determined to survive no matter what. But... you know, it’s Tool, thus wildly open to interpretation, and that’s just mine. Love

This is my all time favorite song so I'm really glad to see the review on it. Powerful and intense, though I have always associated it closer with bad relationships than with childhood abuse, its all very much the same cycle. Probably not worth its own review, but you may want to check out the album version as well. It flows very differently than this, he was serious when he said it was viewing it from a new angle, and hits in a different way. One of the things I love in this song is the way subtle pronunciation changes so much. The lyrics may be 'pushit on me' but a subtle inflection change as he's repeating it makes it 'push it on me' or 'push shit on me'. Same with the idea of 'still love me' gets changed to feel closer to 'steal off me' at points. Also from some of your discussions I think you might really dig 'Prison Sex' by them. It uses a very crude metaphor, but its all about that idea of how the golden rule is rather different for those who have been abused. Do onto others has a different connotation if its just perpetuating the cycle of abuse.
@musicmademejester4 жыл бұрын
That's how I always looked at it too, a toxic relationship. But that's the good thing about Maynard lyrics, he always said he wants the listener to interpret the lyrics the way the relate to them, thats why a lot of their songs are not very specific. Maynard will always have a specific thing he is writing about or a certain emotion but it up to us to put our own experiences to those lyrics. You can interpret the song being about a toxic relationship or child abuse and it makes sense either way. It up to the listener.
@richardchancellor24804 жыл бұрын
I agree with your assessment, but I've often felt that it covers the back and forth inside your own self after said relationship. The aftereffects you deal with trying to process the toxicity experienced. The realization that things can get dark inside your head but not letting it push you back into the gap. Feeling those hands, and fighting to survive. That's how it helped me anyway. I was happy to see so many feel the depth of the song that I do as well.

Dave Grohl has a great line were he says, "you can sing a song to 200,000 people and 200,000 people will give you their own interpretation of a song". I'm not really sure what Maynard's true meaning is behind that line. But it seems to fit with the rest of the lyrics.

I would have loved to hear this live. Can't wait till Bonnaroo. No matter what they play, it will be a night to remember.

One of the best tool songs 💚. Bro once you're hooked on 1 tool song you're a tool fan for life. One day you will find yourself listening to a full tool album, by yourself, and it is going to take you to a whole different level and understanding and appreciation of this band. For me this song is about the toxic element in relationships of the push pull dynamic that plays out especially during fights or break ups. I guess the dynamic can be applied to a variety of situations.

There is no damn way that I could have handled hearing this version as my first exposure to PUSHIT. Especially while still in the early(ish) stages of the journey. Respect sir, respect. 🌀♾️🌀

This is one of my favorite songs of all time, especially when you compare it with the studio version. They go together so well, the contrast in delivery of the lines and the music really change the meaning.

Maynard , the lead singer, is a very special person. We are all special. This man meant me feel normal, through his lyrics and voice

Triple entendre. Relationship, sex, addiction. All centered on abuse. Maynard's writing is exceptional and full of metaphors.

Damn, dude... I am sorry to hear about your story. We have to remember though. The struggles we have in life, are what make us stronger after we weather the storm. I appreciate you for sharing, and for opening your mind to this incredible band. Remember. Be positive, be kind for no reason, and spread the love!

Loved your interpretation man. To me Tool is metaphorical enough that people can place their own meaning into the lyrics, but grounded enough that that meaning can relate to specific real life experiences, so thank you for sharing how the song connected with you.

Damn. I grew up being abused before I had a chance to defend myself. The insight you made about how one sees abuse as a way to acknowledged, was amazing. That's really how it feels.

I've been a Big Time TooL fan for over 20 years. This version of the song is absolute perfection. You really have to hear the album version to get the full picture of what's actually going on with this live version. TooL is definitely a band like no other, with lyrics and instrumental talent to match. Enjoy the rabbit hole my friend.
