Keep in mind though that what you saw in this video is only an embryo of what TOOL have become....consider that this concert was exactly 30 years ago! Today a TOOL live show doesn't even remotely resemble this one. Apart from the grandiose sets, the visual and lighting effects which however do not represent the real change, the bassist has changed and the way of performing has been distorted. In '95 Paul D'Amour gave way to Justin Chancellor. This change was fundamental and allowed them to become what they are today, as if they had suddenly taken off the handbrake. They were a nice promising group like many others in those years, a group that could be defined as post grunge / alternative metal with dark lyrics and songs with a rather standard structure and quite complex and original rhythms, but ultimately not even that much. With the arrival of Justin, from one album to another, TOOL began to resemble only themselves. They are now defined as progressive metal, but it's a stretch because we need to pigeonhole and categorize everything and the "Tool" musical genre doesn't exist. The songs have lost the standard structure, they have become filled with polyrhythms with the instruments exchanging roles, they play along different paths that suddenly intersect. The role of the lead singer has been abolished and the voice is considered an instrument like the other three. This can be seen both in the way of recording the albums, with the voice almost never being central and with a higher volume, like all the others, and in the live performances. The "intense singer" you saw here first started wearing make-up and masks for a few years, after which he gave up his classic and universal position as lead singer and did in live performances what he does on records: he doesn't sing in front of his companions on the stage. He is an instrument like the others and therefore he sits behind, next to the drums. Over the years he has hidden more and more and no longer even has the spotlight on him. For about ten years now it has even been difficult to see him and he has become just a black silhouette dancing against the colored background. I would like to continue explaining to you how much the lyrics and music have evolved in the meantime, but I'm really tired of writing and I'm relatively certain that I've already broken the record for the longest comment in the history of KZbin. Furthermore, I am Italian and I also have to translate my thoughts so I'm just telling you that if you continue like this, you will soon realize for yourself what I mentioned above and also why the group's fans are (myself included) so obsessed and loyal, to the point of calling ourselves TOOL Army. Their uniqueness makes them irreplaceable and if they manage to get you, all other music fades into the background.

I hate when people use this cliche of getting angry that the concept of genres exist. Its not pigeonholeing. Its simply the result of trying to communicate and describe complex concepts such as music (especially unusual music such as Tool) in an efficient manner. Its only needs to provide a vague approximation. Progressive metal is the clostest approximation, unless you're prepared to assign a new genre for every unique band you encounter. But then it loses any communicative value. These genre arguments are simultaneously juvenile and elitist.

@@jess_n_atx In fact I said that "we need " pigeonhole and categorize. The "we" includes "me" and the "need" indicates a necessity. This doesn't bother me or make me angry. It's simply a necessity as you say. I didn't want to be a snob. I'm just saying that we have to put them somewhere out of necessity, but TOOL are really original and especially from Aenima / Lateralus onwards, it's practically impossible to answer the question of the friend who asks you: "I don't know TOOL. What kind of music they do?" . To answer such a simple question, progressive metal is the obvious choice, even if it's a very rough approximation indeed. You're the one who saw a criticism that I hadn't written and honestly didn't even think about.

Very nice of you to apologize especially the way you did. You are obviously sincere and I don’t think it was necessary but it says a lot about your character. Tool is a great band. I’ve seen them 6 times and January in Nashville will be the seventh. I saw them in Philly in ‘’92 I think it was in a small battle of the bands venue. They weren’t big yet but was obvious to me they were the best there and going places. My bro is a musician and took me there. I’m thankful for that because they’ve changed my life and always been there delivering the best music ever. This video is over 30 years ago. There most recent album which has won numerous awards is probably their best musical album . It’s amazing. I still love lateralus the most but as a musician if you check out Tempest, it won song of the year and I believe it’s the longest song to ever do so. Maynard is in 3 bands still and his voice is amazing but not what it once was. This song is about a friend that could on be musically creative in his mind when he was high. I think this caused them to no longer be friends because his addiction was outta control.

You should react to Alan Mearns. He’s an amazing classical guitarist you can find on KZbin, he has his own channel. Rick Beato talked about how amazing he was and Ric was not lying!!

When there's talk of the best live performances ever recorded, this one is definitely up there as one of those. I'd say that Jeremy by Pearl Jam live is up there with this one to in my opinion.

You've gotta check out the entire 'Pneuma' album [BTW definition is: (in Stoic thought) the vital spirit, soul, or creative force of a person]. You will hear a celestial opus dei from Tool if you sit through the entire album. Please react to it. It's by far their most "classically" oriented album and very refined without being needlessly over produced. It's truly a representation of the mastery of their musicianship which is on another higher dimension's elite immortal tier. Seriously, you will have no regrets, only that you didn't hear the album sooner. With that being said, there's talent and artistic mastery in all their albums, even their earlier works. But you can see the mature fully formed 'final' (hope not) end stage of an oedipian lifelong journey for this band that's been together about as long as I've been alive (I'm 33). You can hear the unadulterated devotion in their most recent album. They kept us waiting like 13 years after their 2006 'the pot' album and they didn't disappoint and worth every millisecond of the wait. I got into a prefect circle when I was 13 in 2003 with their '13th step' album which is a "cult classic" for fellow fans (another group Maynard is in which is a bit more "harmonic" and "chill" progressive and has very stimulating contemplative vibes). I was then introduced to Tool in 2006 when I started to hang out with all the adolescent delinquent future addict crowd... I've been hooked and have kept coming back to Tool ever since the age of 16.

I don't think people have the right to be angry with you you didn't do anything wrong but maybe next time just pause the video and one cut it when you start it again. If they get mad at you for that then who cares
