Here is a quick tutorial on how to practice this beast of a groove.
My apologies for falsely calling the 3/4, 6/4 and 5/4 grooves 3 over 4 grooves, etc. (Shout out to @Guyin Apocket)

This is great! Although, I think Danny plays the swiss triplet in unison (without the flam). I think that's why most drummers don't even realize he's doing the rudiment. Similar to what he does in Pneuma or Triad.

I see from the video description that you already realized that it is not in 6/4 but 3/4. What you didn't realize is that you start the bass drum pattern wrong and play it in the wrong place. Your notation says to start with a singe bass drum followed by two 16th note rests. But Danny plays two 8th notes in the beginning and form there the pattern moves on. Actually the bass drum sits right on top of what Justin plan on the bass. So in 16th notes it is a 5 note pattern wich goes 1o1oo (1 being a kick and o being a pause) and then just repeats through the five bars of 3/4 time. You basically switched the pattern around so it is 1oo1o and that's why it is running completely against Justins bass part. That doesn't happen in the original. Apart from that everything is right and explained understandably. But this one major part is important to get right. Cheers

Use a metronome and practice the first measure at about 50-70% of the target tempo. When it feels comfortable, increase the bpm by 2-4 and continue to practice (you slowly increase the speed but you trick your brain into thinking its the same speed because its such a small increase). Continue to increase the tempo little by little until you can play it at target tempo or greater. Then repeat the process for bars 2,3,4 & 5. Tie them all together as you progress and then finally add the quarter note hi-hat/claps after you can cycle all 5 measures repeatedly. Hope that makes sense, kind of confusing to type drum talk.

Great video and a beat that I have been struggling with myself. I have to ask however, When listening to the song It sounds like the bass drum follows Justin's bass but in your sheet music is looks like the first bass drum interval is one 16th too long which brings the pattern out of sync. Otherwise great video and great drumming.
@lgrumet
@lgrumet 3 жыл бұрын
intersting. I'll do some research and get back to you ;) not quite sure what you mean though. are you talking about the very second bass drum beat in the sheet music? right after the very first bd note?
@lgrumet
@lgrumet 3 жыл бұрын
Something else, mentioned in passing: Justin doesn't always follow the bass drum exactly. He uses the pattern rather to build a melody on it. He plays some funny clicks with his bass every now and then, for example every time the snare is played.

@lgrumet 3 жыл бұрын
i just played back the pattern from the sheet music using a drum plugin....seems to work for me, I didn't have the impression it was out sync. can you elaborate further?
@trentkraemer7109
@trentkraemer7109 3 жыл бұрын
@@lgrumet you started the kick pattern with a dotted kick, then the continual 16th and 16th dotted, if you start with the 16th then play the 16th dotted you will be in sync with the bass line. So at 2:57 on your sheet music the first measure should actually be what you have for the 4th measure. So the reason why it works is because you’re playing it correctly, just the kick pattern is out of phase.

This! I was watching the video and wondering why nobody else seemed to say anything about it. The tom part seemed to be fully correct, but although it is explained correctly that the kick drum part is a grouping of 5/8 (as is the bass part), it didn't seem like it lined at all with the bass part in this video. As the background audio is loud enough here, you can easily hear the bass riff and consequently see that the kick drum figure is completely out of sync with the bass guitar.
