In today's episode of Sound Like, Rabea & Matt try to recreate the drop-tuned riffs of Adam Jones from Tool! Combining a Gibson Les Paul Custom, three amps and a mixture of BOSS, MXR and DOD pedals. The result? A thick, textured, stadium-filling tone. This one will be tough to replicate!

I just wrote a long winded comment basically saying that. It sounded so unbelievably bad. Like these guys are supposed to be professional who work at a guitar shop, record these videos. Yet a riff that isn’t even complicated. It’s honestly incredibly easy. And they made it sound like a nickel back song. It absolutely ruined it for me. It kind of ruined this video series for me. What a terrible way to squander $10,000 worth of quality gear.

Could very well be. It could also be a number of things like the EQ, the attenuator, the recording/post processing. I think they did a really good job because as you said the cleaner parts were exactly spot on. My reaction was also in parts because super saturated high-gain sound isn't really all that interesting for my ears.

My first impression of the guitar tone was "too much mids." Especially if you're referencing 10000 Days, you need a more "spunky" sounding tone with a rich high end presence. You can really hear it in Jambi and the last section of Rosetta Stoned

@@naveedalikhan108 imo, they are both amazing musicians, but in terms of general respect among their respective communities, Justin's techniques and tones are far more sought after and respected between bassists when compared to Adam in guitar communities, where he doesn't get enough respect in my opinion with people saying he has nothing unique about him. I love both of them, and they are both equally as talented. With that being said, I would say that Justin is more innovative on his respective instrument, but Adam is still a monster with a perfect refined tone, and techniques like ambient pick scrapes found in Third Eye, Talkbox used in Jambi, picking behind the bridge in Eulogy, and more.

Lol right! I really applaud them for at least being able to get the sound close to the original by ear but they’re way off on the notes to play! When he played Vicarious my ooze oozed, and flesh crawled 😂. Ok, I’m exaggerating but he was way off on guitar! I literally play Vicarious almost every single day as one of my warm up songs to loosen up my hands, and fingers. I can with 100% confidence say that it was way off. To be honest, I didnt really feel it. Guitars seemed off. I can't quite put my finger on it though. Bass was not tight enough either. Granted, it's hard to emulate whatever black magic is going on in a WAL bass. But I think you should have gone for a two humbucker Spector instead of the PJ one. The P-Pickup is too soft for the target sound. Then use a GK or Mesa Amp for bass. I know it's a guitar video but I think a huge part of getting the guitar right is getting the bass right as well.

It doesn't really matter. This happens all the time. It's not about covering a song or showing how to play a riff. As long as it sounds similar then that's all they need. I also think they don't always look up tabs but do it by ear. I wouldn't be surprised.

I love Bea and Matt but im disappointed that they had such little knowledge of Adams rig. He uses a BF2 flanger for modulation not chorus. He uses a mxr micro amp for boost. He uses a simple dunlop wah and dd3 delay. Also (and this may be the most important pedal) he uses a ernie ball passive volume pedal. And finally for 10000 days hes using the helio talk box. Dont forget the glass slide! Thats exact and extremely simple.

What a way to make up for the absence of a sound like yesterday! can i get Metallica BY busting the bank, along with Eric Clapton, Johnny Marr, Stephen Carpenter, Joe Satriani, Jack White, anything else would be nice and maybe some Radiohead Without Busting cos I'VE BEEN ASKING FOR WEEKS or you could do something much different and try a lesser known guitarist called Jeff Williams i made a rig for a jeff williams sound like i saw him using a Musicman JP6 in a video which is a great guitar but it is rare, probably expensive and andertons haven't got it so i think the JP60 is gonna do the job, and i know normally we'd go "no sig for someone else's rig" but i made a rule where if the guitarist has used or does use someone else's signature guitar and you can get it then it's ok to use it, so JP60 for amps i'm not sure what he uses but it might be something along the lines of Kemper, Axe FX, Marshall or maybe even Mesa cos he seems like he's influenced by guys such as John Petrucci... looking back in the Motley Crue sound like where they used a Blackstar HT Club 40 the guitar into amp demo tone sounded close to the tone in "I Burn" so in that case get the HT Club 40 for pedals i am not sure but it looks like a multi fx pedal, i think the two pedals that are most common would be overdrive and wah cos he uses wah in a lot of solos including the solos in I Burn, Boop, Dream Come True and Not Fall In Love With You, so a cheap Boss OD like the Super Overdrive and a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah will do the job Musicman JP60 - £670 Blackstar HT Club 40 - £450 Boss Super Overdrive - £50 Dunlop Cry Baby Wah - £90 coming in at £1260

Recently I thought that you could try to collect rigs that would be good for a specific genre on three diffrent budgets: really cheap/ begginner, medium price/ mediocore, expensive/ pro. For example 1000£, 2250£ and 4000£? You could try to find guitars, amps and pedals for genres like Indie, metal, punk etc. Think about it, love your videos! Cheers
