hi guys, i couldn't add the actual video into my reaction so if you haven't seen the music video for this song, i strongly suggest you check it out. very cool. please let me know what song i should listen next.
Thanks for watching. Lyrics below.
I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lover's souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication
The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication
I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame, it doesn't mean I don't desire
To point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication
The poetry that comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance
There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow and strengthen our communication
cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion
Between supposed lovers
Between supposed lovers
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit

However, in spite of the specific sequence in Lateralus, Schism changes meter 47 times. I've heard a lot of covers, and no one, NO ONE, nails it like the originators. As conceptual pieces they should first be heard as a whole concept and then individual song picking is fine. :o Opiate and Undertow on Vinyl are fantastic. I was amazed at how different they sounded from disc or mp3 or any digital form. Im not one of those pretentious snobs that turns my nose up to non viynl. It is about relationships but not just a single couple but humanity with each other. We are social creatures who instinctively act cooperatively and in tribes, however with the society we have, this has broken down and we are becoming more selfish and individualistic, our communication and cooperation with each other has suffered, but if we can regain compassion for each other we can start to cooperate and rebuild. No love for Puscifer? I *only* checked them out because of Maynard and was pleasantly hooked immediately after. There's a few songs on each album I didn't really care for, some of which grew on me. But for the most part they got some good stuff. "Dear Brother" is a good one. "Humbling River" was used on a video game Transformers WFC but is definitely a good song. "Momma Said" is good, the "Tandimonium" mix is better IMO. "Trekka" good, "Spaghetti Trekka" is good too. "Polar Bear" and "Potions" brought me close to tears when I heard them, not because they are crazy powerful, but because I felt a connection to the meaning I interpreted from them. They are both really great though. "Arsonist", "Autumn", "Apocalyptical", "The Remedy" and more. This is just a small list of a portion of my favorites, If you're new to them, check them out. I guarantee you won't be sorry you did. If you're familiar with the band, hopefully someone who isn't learns of them from this so it wasn't so pointless...😂

Brilliant reaction, so glad you finally gave tool a shot. They are a truly mind blowing band. This song has to many time signatures changes to count and many are in very strange meters. A schism is seperation or a breaking up. The song is about how when communication ceases death follows. If our brains do not communicate with our bodies we die. If we do not communicate with each other our relationship dies. This is why we must bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication. All of tool's music is brilliant, their song lateralus revolves around the fibbonaci sequence, their song 46 and 2 is jungian development of ones personal shadow and their song vicarious is about human nature and our desire to watch things suffer. They have songs about patience, forgivnes, human nature, drugs, spiritual transformation and much more. I highly recomend their song the patient, you will really like it and it has deep lyrics.

It is so cool to be able to watch reaction videos of someone who has a developed ear towards music actually take a chance on stepping outside of their comfort zone to try and understand what others are hearing.. it sets a great example to follow on learning how to listen, no matter where you are from or how old you are.. If you want to hear more Tool, I highly recommend 'Pneuma'..( check out the 'Danny Carey-Vic Firth' live drum cam video.. that will really blow your mind..) Another suggestion for a first viewing video would be Living Color's "Cult of Personality" - ( the official vid has an audio mix that really does the song justice.) I saw this band back in the day and was totally blown away. They opened up for a headlining act whose name I don't even remember, these guys really brought it ! (--And if you're not familiar with them yet, the real surprise is yet to come once you see the vid.) Cheers, thanks again for all the fun posts.. :-)

I'm so glad you took the leap into checking out this band. They're really special and completely unique. They put a lot of value on the production of their songs as if it's the fifth band member in a way. Very artful in the music as well as the lyrics with so many time changes in the rhythm but also between the individual instruments where the drummer might be in 14/4 and the bass in 7/4 and the guitarist bridging between the two. The lyricist adds a whole other layer to the sound which is why his voice is sometimes a little low in the mix. It's not about any one of them individually but rather all four of them together that gives them such a layered and complex sound. If you liked this, you're really going to like most anything off of the AEnima or Laterallus albums. 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum are really, really great as well. Try "Forty Six & 2", "Laterallus", "Right in Two" or "Descending". Keep up the great work! 😉

I've subbed for more Tool and MJK. So wonderful to find young people appreciating music like Tool, the greatest band of all time, as far as I am concerned. You are right on about the interpretation of the song. The music videos are too distracting for a first listen, actually, try to wait to watch the video until after you've heard the song a few times. I hope you continue with Tool and do their entire discography, because they literally do not have a bad song. Maynard James Keenan is the vocalist, and he is the only vocalist (they layer his voice when needed for a particular part of a song) and he also writes all the lyrics. He is a genius and widely considered to have the best voice in rock/metal. I agree. I love MJK's voice, it is one of the four pillars of Tool, along with the guitar of Adam Jones, the bass of Justin Chancellor (Paul D'Amour played in early Tool) who is the "heart" of the beat moreso than the drums. Danny Carey, the drummer, is the best living drummer. No question. He is often called "The Octopus" since it seems he has eight arms when he plays his complicated, and yes, very intelligent, drums/percussion. Maynard has two other bands that he is vocalist/lyricist for: A Perfect Circle (see songs such as "Gravity" and "Pet" and "Judith") and his personal creative outlet Puscifer (see songs such as "Potions" and "Mama Sed" and "Grand Canyon"). Do hope you continue. Stay safe!

There's so many Tool (and A Perfect Circle, Puscifer) songs to recommend that you could almost fill up a queue of videos from them for a year. Especially since from watching your last few videos whether Metallica (which also brings to mind some tracks by Anthrax and Megadeth and Slayer and Pantera as well) or Tool where you note how much you love that progression or building in sound. A lot of Maynard's acts songs actually build to a certain crescendo at the end. It's almost a hallmark of the energy of a Tool or A Perfect Circle track. I really honestly don't feel there's such a thing as a bad Tool album, and some of them the first time you hear them they deviate from the last album enough that it takes a half dozen listens to really take the genius in. I mean, initially 7empest off of their new album wowed me but after awhile it felt too much like a guitar and drum solo and less cohesive than other songs on their album. It still really shows Danny and Adam's abilities off but it almost purely feels like it was built for that vs. being like a traditional Tool song where it was cohesive. The rest of the album, the more I take it in, the better it gets but initially I was sort of lukewarm on it. Just some off the top of my head though: Ænima, Right in Two, Pushit (maybe his strongest vocal showing - it really shows off his range), Sober, Prison Sex, Lateralus, Vicarious, 10,000 Days (Wings for Marie) Part 1 and 2 (written about his mother who lived through paralysis for much of her life prior to her eventual death, and yet kept her religious faith with all she endured and remained a powerful force of reason in his life), their cover of No Quarter (Led Zeppelin originally), Descending, Fear Innoculum, Pneuma, The Pot... we can go on for days and there's tons of additional songs worthy of listening. For A Perfect Circle: Passive, By and Down (off of their greatest hits album 360, not the remake titled By and Down the River off of Eat the Elephant - it's a lot flatter and doesn't show his vocals as well IMHO), Judith, The Noose, Pet, Weak and Powerless, 3 Libras, Counting Bodies like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums... I weigh their earlier stuff a little heavier, as eMotive and Eat the Elephant weren't as good for me. 360 being a Greatest Hits album was a good compilation to pick up and listen to, but By and Down off of it which was the lone all new release on it blew me away and is probably one of if not my absolute favorite A Perfect Circle song. Finally, Puscifer: Rev: 22:20 (Dry Martini Mix), Momma Sed, Potions, The Mission, The Humbling River, The Undertaker, Indigo Children, Holiday on the Moon... As an act, Puscifer might be a little harder to get a feel for. This is the act that I think Maynard tends to experiment most with and you'll hear a wide varying array of sounds. I think their first album/EP was genuinely their best but there's been a smattering of tracks along the way that really speak to me. Potions, like Passive from A Perfect Circle, came out of remnants of Maynard working with Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails. They had a stillborn act called "Tapeworm" that never made it out into an album. Maynard basically recycled 2 of the tracks with his other bands. I'd also suggest maybe checking out Nine Inch Nails: Right Where it Belongs, Everyday is Exactly the Same, Hurt, The Fragile, The Perfect Drug, Something I Can Never Have, We're In This Together Now, The Perfect Drug, The Wretched, Closer, Wish, Down In It, Ruiner, Terrible Lie, Ringfinger, The Day the World Went Away... And even Trent's act with Atticus Ross and his wife called; How to Destroy Angels: The Space In-Between. I dig your interest and enthusiasm for all of this. For someone that hasn't experience a lot of this music, in a day and age when radio often can deprive you of hearing these tracks as few true hard rock/metal stations exist... it could be hard to really tap into this stuff and become aware. And the sad thing about a lot of social media and even KZbin comments is there's a certain toxicity amongst fans that can lead to you being swayed to not listen to things. I value your open mind and the interests of experiencing something new. Enjoy yourself and stay safe, and keep producing content!

I'm one of those Tool fanatics, so it's tough for me to pin-point "the best" Tool. I stroooongly recommend Lateralus. Amazing polyrythmics, including having the drummer playing in a different time signature than the rest of the band at one point. It is best known for incorporating the Fibonacci sequence into the beats for some of the lyrics. The song's working title was "9-8-7" because the opening riff's time signature is 9/8 - 8/8 - 7/8. Then they realized that "987" is one of the numbers in the Fibonacci sequence, and the lead singer wrote the lyrics accordingly. The Fibonacci sequence is usually depicted graphically as a spiral, and he worked that into the lyrics as well. Tool lyrics are also frequently about New Age expanding the mind sort of stuff, and that gets worked in as well. Complex but smooth polyrythms, meta-lyrics, with gradual build-up to a powerful ending... it's got everything that makes Tool, Tool. Oh, and then do "Hooker with a Penis". Completely different, but I promise you won't regret it! :-)

Invincible is sick. It's awesome and just keeps going. You think the song is over then it moves up a gear. Excellent lyrics also... like all Tool songs.

Another Tool song you should check out is Vicarious. I believe Tool is among the most original bands in existence. They have their own sound and style, they don't sound like anyone else. Genius songwriting, unusual formats, and tricky changes in time signature. You also should check out Dream Theater. They are composed of insanely talented prodigies. Every member is a master on his instrument. They have a lot of material recorded over the years. Untethered Angel is the first song off of their latest release, Distance Over Time. It's a good place to start, but there is a wealth to choose from with some songs over 20 minutes in length.

You have quite an ear! It takes most people a few listens before they can comprehend what they just heard after hearing Tool their first time . The fact that you said this is your favorite so far says a lot. Though I don't know what other bands you've reacted to, Tool will be pretty hard to top. "Right in two" "Lateralus" and "Vicarious" are definitely a couple musts from Tool. Try Rush "2112" Dream Theater's "Stream of consciousness" and Metallica "Orion" sometime. They won't disappoint. One more thing is listen to Tools live recordings. What makes Tool so awesome is there ability to execute their songs so well live. I I was fortunate enough to see them 3 times this year before Covid hit. The last show was in Las Vegas, I went with my dad and it ended up being the last night I got to spend with him. I couldn't have asked for a better night to remember.

It's so cool to see someone discover and appreciate this. Much respect for actively listening and being objective. "Schism" has been my favorite Tool song for awhile, but "Pneuma" is creeping up there. I would love to see your reaction to Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool (LIVE IN CONCERT) Be well, Slanzzy. You're beautiful.

You are spot on with your takeaways on experiencing tool for the 1st time. Real music affects you on multiple levels in waves of beauty that leave u speechless in the end. So much going on u have to hear it again and again to soak it all in trying to admire the genius of its simplistic nature and power of expression. Then u realize, these guys are using the same notes as everybody else, these guys are f****** awesome!

I became a tool fan in the early 2004 living in a Army barracks with 4 other members of my Infantry squad. One guy used to let tool play all night long and i would hear them in my dreams and be hearing their music all day the next day in my head but it converted me into a tool fan to this day

Congratulations! Welcome to the other side of your mind. Every fan has a connection with each and with an individual interpretation. We do share each emotion when we watch these kinds of videos and also when we have a slight movement in the universe. Listen to Third Eye... with your eyes closed. Heck... the whole Album is amazing. But this is one to do next. IMO.
