as an old hat tool fan, I highly, HIGHLY recommend that you do first listens to any tool song from the studio. They hyper produce their sound intentionally, and generally a stadium/concert venue will not translate nearly as well. Do check out concert performances AFTER hearing the recording, but you really need to experience it the way Tool intended before we add factors like crappy sound recording in a huge venue, which tends to dilute the fidelity. Tool concerts are a spiritual experience, but you really have to go to appreciate it. Just my two cents :)

A coming together of 4 of the best musicians in rock. Danny Carey is the greatest living rock/prog/metal drummer pound for pound, Maynard's voice is sublime, Adam's guitar is always inventive and serves the song perfectly and Justin's bass is, melodic, filthy funky at times and just rock solid. One of my favourite bands. Seen them 3 times and each time I'm left utterly speechless.

I’m with you on studio recording vs live recordings. Always better to hear the studio version first. If you hear a live version first, bands will often times make changes to sound and tunings. So when you finally hear the studio version, it’s quite different. And it’s not the song you initially heard. That being said, I always prefer live recordings. The way they evolve a song. Often times for the better. But always hear the studio first.

Spiral out! Random Tool react tips: - Whatever you do - don't do an official video of theirs, unless you've already heard the song. The guitarist directs them, and they are artistic, but they are also very unsettling and distracting. - Headphones are a huge plus, as are lyrics sometimes. - Finally - there are a few songs that are intended to be played one after another. Whoever is assisting you with the song selection will probably know this - but jic - be aware and do a quick search to make sure. Technically many people play the cleanser song before this one - but it's not really important. Others it is. Parabol/Parabola should be played without a delay between. Wings for Marie 1&2. Lipan Conjuring + Lost Keys + Rosetta Stoned(you aren't likely ready for this one yet) Loving the reacts!

Your first comment after the song’s sudden ending was dead on. They draw you in and take you on a journey. That journey unfolds on multiple levels simultaneously. Primal, primitive, visceral with pounding rhythms and loud metal. Also travel in the spiritual realm (“meditative” as you said). Intellectual too with the addition of lyrics. Thought provoking, challenging assumptions about reality as we know it. I am discovering and delving into Tool too right along with you and responding similarly. You have reacted to one Tool favorite of mine (The Pot). Great intro to the Tool experience.. I don’t think you have reacted to my other favorite “Pneuma”-which I think is brilliant. Great example of the multi-layered journey. Thanks for doing these from a happy subscriber!

Just for reference there are Tool songs that must be done together, intention/Jimmy. Parabol/parabola, Wings for Marie1&2, Reflection/disposition/triad, Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned,…. Maybe a few more…but these are the main ones. Don’t split these up and do them as one reaction. Otherwise you will rob yourself of the total experience as well as piss more than a few zealous followers of your journey. Great video :-)

Honestly I think the studio recordings are the right way to go with most Tool songs, at least for listening to them for the first time. Their records tend to have really fantastic audio engineering and a lot of that subtlety gets lost in live performances. Tool is a great band to *see* live, but just listening to recordings of their live performances is not the same thing.
