Lyrics:
There's a shadow just behind me
Shrouding every step I take
Making every promise empty
Pointing every finger at me
Waiting like a stalking butler
Who upon the finger rests
Murder now the path of must we
Just because the son has come
Jesus, won't you fucking whistle
Something but the past and done?
Jesus, won't you fucking whistle
Something but the past and done?
Why can't we not be sober?
Just want to start this over
And why can't we drink forever?
I just want to start this over
I am just a worthless liar
I am just an imbecile
I will only complicate you
Trust in me and fall as well
I will find a center in you
I will chew it up and leave
I will work to elevate you
Just enough to bring you down
Mother Mary, won't you whisper?
Something but what's past and done
Mother Mary, won't you whisper?
Something but the past and done
Why can't we not be sober?
I just want to start this over
And why can't we sleep forever?
I just want to start this over
Why?
I am just a worthless liar
I am just an imbecile
I will only complicate you
Trust in me and fall as well
I will find a center in you
I will chew it up and leave
Trust me
Trust me
Trust me
Trust me
Trust me
Why can't we not be sober?
I just want to start things over
And why can't we sleep forever?
I just want to start this over
Why?
I want what I want
I want what I want
I want what I want
I want what I want

When I was a 16 year old stoner I never realised how deep this song is and how much it means to me. I'm a 40 year old recovering alcoholic and addict and I've cried myself to sleep listening to this on repeat many times. Music is the best medicine

@@facile_dot3610 I can forgive the bad english, what I can't forgive is the bad understanding of music. A chord is a bunch of harmonic notes, not octaves. Don't chat shit if you don't know shit. When I was about 10 I moved my room into the basement of our house. My dad, who worked 3rd shift, gave me his alarm clock since the one in my previous room was my brother's. I was unaware that this song was his alarm so for a solid week I would wake up around midnight, frightened beyond belief, to a man screaming something about being sober and I had no idea where it was coming from so I'd just hide under my pillow until the scary yelling man went away. Good times.

Progressive Metal is the genre Tool falls within; it is known for breaking traditional music structure and Tool is a phenomenal Prog Metal Band Tool does things like having instruments fall in and out of alignment with each other alongside myriad other cool things that are 1, difficult to compose, 2 hellishly difficult to perform live properly due to their complexity, and 3; require an immense ability to compose, write, and perform music to get to sound so amazing

R.i.p to my brother who introduced me to every single band I've loved the first being tool at the age of 14 which was the most passionate to him and i....the alcohol fucked your head as did mine, never truly understood how horrible alcohol addiction is... he resented everything he loved at the end of his days except this song.... it sparked something up in his head where he wouldn't call me a tool(literally lol) for listening to music he loved..ive been addicted to heroin for 6 years and thankfully havent touched that for 3 years......now i am 2 years addicted to alcohol and i would never wish alcoholism on my worst enemy..(beside myself)..its the devil physically and mentally . 2016 was a terrible year for my family.. they say it goes in threes and i never believed that superstition and still don't but my mother lost her firstborn, her mother and our dog of 9 years. I dont want to continue this cycle im going to detox on Tuesday i have a bed lined up.. i just dont know what will happen when I get out

I think of this song when I think of addiction. There's a desperation to the melody and lyrics that capture the emotion perfectly. "Mother Mary, won't you whisper?" Whoever's asking the question is screaming out to the divine for help. It ends with obsessive circular thinking: "I want what I want." It's a very powerful and meaningful song without being bloated and contrived, unlike some of Tool's later songs.

This song hits different when you deal with depression, and not drug addiction. I’ve had days where I wish I’d sleep forever ( like the song says) and that no one would care if I died. A few times I thought about hanging myself or slitting my throat or overdosing on pills. But I’ve stayed firm in staying alive, I know that if I don’t feel understood that I should make an effort to be understood and liked. I can’t be quiet and expect people to listen to me. I need to be vocal. That’s why I have been more talkative an open. Having autism does things to you, like having people not get you and make fun of you. Which is why I am depressed and could relapse into suicide.

When I got out my Dad showed me a ton of the music he loved while we sat around and talked late at night (His way of showing support). I can clearly remember this song and while I didn't and don't have a drug problem, the song still resonated with me because of what had happened at the time. The emotion in the way the chorus is sung is so amazingly fitting! There's this explosion in a few words and then a gradual transition towards exhaustion in the rest, like all the rage and desperation the person is feeling, and all the energy he has left in him is concentrated in those couple cries, and then when he continues with the rest of the sentence, he's totally drained of everything. Or I guess you could also see it as if the toned-down parts of the sentences is the regular tone and volume, and the parts where he roars are the unexpected moments when he still has some fight, genuine emotions and hope in him.
