Maynard is alluding to "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a novel in which a woman is forced to wear the letter 'A' on her clothing at all times so the entire town she lives in knows she's an adulterer.

Sidenote... yes... and... the combo of scarlet letterman implies that the person accused wears the scarlet letter with pride like a letterman jacket from a school sports team that has the letter sewn on it.

This is why Tool fans are my favorite people. Philip, I work in the mental health field/psychology field because, in large part to Tool. When Aenima was released, and Maynard was singing "My shadow! Chang is coming through my shadow!" I had no clue what he was talking about. So, I researched it. Tool pointed me to Jung. Jung introduced me to psychology...and here i am. Shows you the potency of this band. They make you smarter.

The song talks about how holding a grudge will essentially erode you away. Saturn, whose revolution around the Sun takes more or less 29 years, mythologically represents the passing to a new age in life, gained only if you choose to "give away the stone" and "let it go". Also, best intro track of an album EVER!

Saturn is the astrological symbol for Karma. It's cycle is 29.5 years and is an analogy for maturity. Choose one or ten has something to do with numerology (not sure exactly. Absolutes maybe.) The stone is a reference to the philosopher's stone from Alchemy which was sought to transmute metal (usually lead) into gold. EDIT: real scream of 29(ish) seconds.

To the comment concerning Saturn ascends, the Saturn return is a time that happens every 27 years in your life give or take, so its wherever Saturn was when you're born, it returns to that place when you're around 27, 54, etc.(hence the lyrics "Saturn comes back around, lifts you up like a child") Those are thought to be the times of major change in our lives, the times we can choose to stay the same or learn and grow a great deal. Still loving the videos. Like the new graphics at the beginning too.

I feel like Saturn in this song is more violent than simply stay how you are or move forward. After all, it also talks about mythological Saturn eating you. So it’s a quite a warning to relinquish you grudge.
@PeteOliva4 жыл бұрын
The Saturn reference in this song is exactly this to me, and it roughly outlines the three major life phases for us, birth to adulthood, adulthood to elderly age, elderly age to death. When Saturn comes, you'd better be ready evaluate your existence!
@Mazzini114 жыл бұрын
This is one of the most straightforward yet philosophical Tool songs in their catalog. Let go of your grudges. They just drag you down, right? Pretty straightforward. But the references MJK uses are pretty advanced for most people. His references to alchemy aren't basic knowledge to most people. Alchemists, in all ages of alchemy, do not exist to transform lead into gold, or basic materials into higher materials. Instead, the goal of the alchemist is to transmutate your negative ATTITUDES into positive ATTITUDES. The goal of the alchemist is to transform yourself into a higher being.

P S well. There is a warning in the song. If you don’t give up your grudges, “Saturn comes ‘round again” and devours you. He’s talking about The Scarlet Letter. The song is about giving up grudges. “Your scarlet lettermen” are those who’ve wronged you (you mark them with a scarlet letter, i.e. hold a grudge against them for that specific wrongdoing). It wouldn’t make much sense to be talking about a jacket in the context of the song.

Watching people trying to decipher Tool is a wonderful experience. F*ck! I love this band, Brother, if I may, I think the word you're looking for is anxiety, instead of sociopathic. Anxiousness. We're terrified of being wrong because of anxiety. The fear that people will think we're stupid. Foolish pride serves as our defense mechanism. You, in your candor, confessed that your partner is right, more often then not. Men, most men, not all men, are slaves to foolish pride. We give it cool sounding names like "bravado," or "machismo," but really what it is...is stupid, inherent male privilege and narcissism. That's what Maynard is singing about

@daigo128654 жыл бұрын
Their music is full of metaphors and deep references. For example, in this song he talks about Saturn ascending. In this reference its a measure of time as Saturn takes roughly 27 years to come back around in orbit. Interestingly enough, 27 years is rou ghly 10,000 days which is a references to the album/songs of the same name, which is actually a reference to how long his mother was paralyzed for in real life. Really deep stuff man, I highly recommend you go down the rabbit hole.

This is not the way to discover Tool. Put really good headphones on, pop in their CD, and either immerse yourself in the album art, which can stand on its own without the music, or look up the lyrics online while you listen. Having to pause, having to come up with something to say to the viewer- it's not right. These guys are the best composers I've know of. Their ability to write music is up there with Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff. Your channel will survive without the Tool subscribers. You deserve to be able to discover Tool the way the rest of us did- just listen, just immerse. Bathe in the fountain.
