The record label was upset that Lateralus only had experimental longer songs and there wasn’t anything they could use as a single. They requested a heavier song. So Maynard in Maynard fashion gave them what they wanted but in his own way. That’s also why they have the long drawn out breakdown just so it would piss off the label even more. Knowing this makes me enjoy this song that much more. Great video man 🤘🏻

This song was a fuck you to the record company. When they finished the album, the record company said there weren’t enough hard songs and wanted them to add a hard song. This was what they got. Korn did the same thing with “Y’all Want a Single”.
@LanceThompsonKssooner2 жыл бұрын
Someone already mentioned this was a response to the label asking for something more angry like their previous albums. But the loooong interlude was a 2nd 🖕because it made the song unplayable on the radio.

Another cool fact: Danny did the drums in one take. If you listen very close at the very end you can hear him cussing at the other members because they were trying to get him to screw up.

This album came out close to Deftones’ White Pony album where Maynard appeared on the song Passenger (which you should totally please listen to) and I always attributed his lyrical style in Ticks and Leeches to Deftones experience plus the angry lyrics of this song alone. 🤘🤘
@daemon42022 жыл бұрын
Tool are the masters of making you comfortable with something and then breaking you by shifting 180 to something you never expect when you least expect. Just when you think you got a grasp of the pattern or rhythm or flow of a song.. You think awww nice little break. Nice medium size break.. hmm longer than usual break.. oooooh coming back now I see I see.... baaaaaaaaaaaaam :D you don't realize they did that 3 times already in this song creating an uneasy dissonance so when you get that restful break you don't know what to expect anymore.

If you want drum cams of Tool songs Check out John Kew. He covers 9 or 10 Tool songs and plays them note perfect with studio quality cams from various angles. Its not Danny playing but you get to appreciate how technical his shit is and its just flabbergasting watching the drum work involved. Highly recommend you do some reactions to his stuff its a different experience watching the drums played with the song, you hear and see every hit.
@hank356822 жыл бұрын
There is no accidents with tool, EVERYTHING they do with instrumentation composition vocals and lyrics is all done with complete Intension, Everything is mixed and mastered to give whatever feel they are trying to convey in a song because tool does not create music they create experiences they create awakenings, This band saved my life and it had almost nothing to do with the music per se, It’s all about Intension atmosphere and feeling, Try to be open minded and not look at things from face value, Dig a little bit deeper and you’ll understand what tool really is, It’s a journey to a whole new way of life 🌀

I’m addition to everything here, Tool was ready to break up. “Schism.” So the label thought let’s suck one more song out of them? Could’ve destroyed Tool but instead they came back with this. Bravo Tool. Agree. The harsh vocal bits are intentional, obviously to fit the mood. Any word of the label F’d with them after this album? Do they have full creative freedom after that? now?

Supposedly they had a 5 record contract, the company complained about how long it took 10,000 days to come out after the success of Lateralus. 13 years to release Fear Innoculum was in part a middle finger to the company. Whether it's true or not, it's still funny.

Lots of you reactors really should start at the beginning of discographies and work forward. You might've recognized this as more familiar to the earlier stuff. They get more prog as the years go by. This song is reminiscent of Opiate, Undertow and Aenima.
