Two legal battles then began that interfered with the band's working on another release. Volcano Entertainment-the successor of Tool's by-then defunct label Zoo Entertainment-alleged contract violations by Tool and filed a lawsuit. According to Volcano, Tool had violated their contract when the band looked at offers from other record labels. After Tool filed a counter-suit stating that Volcano had failed to use a renewal option in their contract, the parties settled out of court. In December 1998 Tool agreed to a new contract, a three-record joint venture deal. Then in 2000, the band dismissed their long-time manager Ted Gardner, who then sued the band over his commission. During this time, Keenan joined the band A Perfect Circle, which was founded by long-time Tool guitar tech Billy Howerdel, while Jones joined The Melvins' Buzz Osborne and Carey drummed with Dead Kennedys' Jello Biafra on side projects. Lateralus (2001-2005) was their next album released which contains "Ticks and Leeches". Napster was giving Tool's music away for free pissing the band off to which the label seemed not interested in protecting the band. Leading to longer songs that were not radio friendly.

The record company wanted Tool to record a hard angry song like they did on Undertow. The ticks and leeches are the record execs. By this time, Tool started to evolve as a band. They were getting older with more substance to their writing but record companies want the $$$.

Myth or not, it tracks, makes sense, and based on Hooker with a Penis, is not beyond the realm of possibility. They could have just felt that way about their record deal in general. Much like Weird Al having a long ass record contract and needing to produce to make the label happy. Meh.

It's about the record industry sucking the life out of the art and the artists. The reason for the long, slow section in the middle was to make it purposefully non-radio friendly. The radio execs wanted a heavy and fast song for radio, so TOOL gave them one... sort of, but not really.

What you said in evaluation plus they made and delivered that radio hit. With a good ol’ fashioned timely radio edit of the albums version’s snail sped breakdown within the middle section. Just cut it out and ride right into transitioning to the album version audience, much anticipated climax and conclusion for fans of Tool and the radio, of coarse. Impatient radio listeners won’t even know it wasn’t a 3:30 sec song which means intros got to go to. Still need to find three minutes to cut to keep radio crowd engaged and interested in it though. I’m sure the rec execs would be all over that. I think they should release this to the radio in 2024, almost 23 years after the album was released. But only the first verse as the songs entirety. I just hope people can be patient enough for a 30 sec rock hit this day and age. Everybody wins and those who suck, go on sucking and don’t feel slighted at all about this. It could change the coarse of history, depending upon who’s got the Rex execs balls on their office desk in a jar.
