So, the story goes like this...Tool was done with the Lateralus album and the label told them they needed a heavy single for the album. Tool made this in response. The reason for the long middle section, is to make the song not very friendly for the radio, which is what the label wanted. This is Tool's "FUCK YOU" to the label - "hope this is what you wanted!" Keep in mind none of this is verified. But, fuck it. Seems pretty sensical to me.

Maynard's screams in this song are probably not the most "famous" (not like the one from "Grudge" or "You Lied" for example), but it's known, that this was actually one of the hardest songs for him to sing, and a harshest test to his vocal cords. I think he actually had to recover after recording this song. Also, Danny Carey really shines in this one.

I think of this song when I start getting over stressed at work. You’ve taken all you can take….got nothing left to give to you. Thank goodness it’s the weekend finally.

I love this setup. I think it's really helpful for first time tool listeners to have someone there to guide and provide some background information. For me, after i heard a new tool song, I'd go full on analysis mode and relistened over and over. And then the song clicked. So if you only hear it once it's super helpful to have someone help analyse it in the moment so you can better appreciate it.

I don't know how i feel about the vocals. (In most of their songs). But i do like the instrumental parts! They do know how to arrange a song! The soft guitar around 9:45... Great touch. Then they bring it back up. I can see why this is on Halloween playlist. The drummer always gives it his all. When you were talking about leeches in movies - have you seen Stand By Me (a classic)! Leeches are in that movie for sure. 😝

You may not like sounds of vocals per se, but consider that Maynards has always taught about finding the adecvate way of singing or fitting effects on his voice for tematic of the songs.
@emmalengel91462 жыл бұрын
Btw, they added the pause in the song to make it a song that a. Way too long for the radio, and b. Generally unappealing to play on the radio.

I like the middle section. Gotta consider the whole album is over 75 minutes. So a 2 minute interlude with ambient vocals never feels overlong to me. So many songs are structured patiently with the pacing, bc they like to build epic crescendos, and also break them back down then build it back up stronger than before.
@Heatwave90002 жыл бұрын
Its way too long and boring. Song is completely ruined because of this section. Way too repetitive.
