Bit late to the party, but for taping and masking for painting prep, take a couple of 8 - 12" pieces of heavy gauge fencing wire, bend one end into a large fish hook shape large enough to hang a roll of tape on, and twist the other end into a coiled loop (you only need one full turn). You can hang the coiled end through your pants belt loop, and hang your masking tape off it. Saves fumbling around and trips up and down a ladder.

Great list! Some of the best underrated housewarming gifts I’ve seen have been a basic toolbox with much of the beginning tools. There’s usually comments later about how necessary one tool or the other was upon moving in.

I was building a shelving unit from scratch last summer and I discovered how useful a compressor with a blowing attachment is. I had to sand all the wood down to make it extra smooth since it was going to be used for clothes, with no paint on it. I didn't want any splinters and after I was done sanding they were covered in sanding dust. Since I was outside I filled up my newly acquired compressor, and within minutes had all the pieces of wood cleaned off. Sure I could have used a leaf blower but the pressure isn't as high. Plus that's not as fun as using your new air compressor with your new blower attachment haha :) Awesome list though!

Yes these are the basic tools you need as a DIY or home owner. Two things I would add would be a tool box or tote and a small tool belt. Nothing worse then having your tools all over the counters, floors, furniture, fridges or stove tops and possibly scratching the surfaces. Or doing fifty trips to the garage to get your tools at location or constantly looking everywhere for them. It wastes time and gets frustrating too! Tool boxes/totes and tool belts are invaluable tools too.

The oscillating multi tool is the most underrated tool that most people dont think they need
@ScorpionRegent
@ScorpionRegent 3 жыл бұрын
DocEmmet - You're right, it's underrated and I don't think I need one. I lived too long to say that it's a necessity. I do know that I have wasted a lot of time working without one, so I do want one, in the worst way. Just curious what else you think is a "must have"?
@Datsyukiandeke
@Datsyukiandeke 3 жыл бұрын
@@ScorpionRegent well that's a bit of a loaded question, although I agree with most of this video. As far as things that I think any homeowner should own regardless of profession, hobbies or current needs, a drill (or impact driver) and a circular saw can do most basic home improvement tasks. Adding an angle grinder, and some basic hand tools like hammers and a pair of channellocks, a shovel and get yourself a ladder for the roof jobs. Little things like extension cords can really be helpful when you need to stretch the range of your power tools.
@ScorpionRegent
@ScorpionRegent 3 жыл бұрын
@@Datsyukiandeke You're right on all counts. The truth is a I have all of those things, and lots more. What I'm looking for is that one tool, that is some how overlooked by most every one, that is just too useful not to have. I know it's a longshot. You were spot on with the oscillating multi tool. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Work smarter, not harder. SR

I'm trying to be more handy around the house, so I appreciate this list. I've got a basic tool kit (hammer, wrenches, screwdrivers, tape measure, etc), but the different power saw choices are really confusing. Did I mention I'm not very handy? Is there a tutorial on what the different saws like circular saw or chop saw are for? At the moment I only have a hand saw and a hacksaw, so my head is spinning. Lol.

Circular saws are good for cutting long sheets of plywood, like for making a shed. Reciprocating saws are good for cutting things rough and quickly like pipes, wood, branches etc. Miter saws are usually used on a table top, good for cutting wood and 45 degree angles. There's really no one size fits all saw. If I was a homeowner I'd buy an oscillating tool saw. It's good for small precise cuts in things like cabinets, drywall, trim under the door, even cut tile etc. They're small, lightweight, fairly cheap and can b be used for lots of stuff.

Nice list for me as a European all the air tools are not so common. Simply because drywall is only done in metal supports and homes are brick and mortar or concrete. So for me a router would make the list.

Please don't use your flat head screwdriver as a Flippin chisel. That's the fastest way to need another screwdriver, because the edge will be garbage.

If you can afford a 60.00 riobi drill you can afford a 100.00 Milwaukee impact that will last longer and will do more then a drill , drills are obsolete as a impact can do anything a drill does .
@1on1c5

not true really. I use my drill on hammer mode for concrete and my impact for deck screw settings. Plus with a drill there is a stop point for finer things to not break or crack metal/wood. just my 2 cents
