This video has been extremely helpful to me. I just bought my first road bike and started riding it. I´m definetely a total beginner, because yesterday I struggled fixing my first flat tire, but with a little help from some KZbin tutorials I finally managed to do it and I´m still really proud that. Now I know, what else I need to buy and practice before I go on even longer rides. Especially during those days, when all bikeshops are closed, there´s almost nobody I could ask for any advice. So I´m really, really grateful for all your videos (and those of other KZbinrs, too), because they teach me everything I need to know.

These are great tips. I’m going to get a derailleur hanger and carry a chain tool and speed links. For a burst tire I carry a piece of old tire to put inside. Spare spokes can go inside your seat tube. Please do the bike clean. I’m especially interested in how you clean your chain.

I had problems with a screw on pump like that, when using tubes with removable valve cores. Others have also had this issue. What happens is you screw the pump on and get the tyre up to pressure, then when you come to unscrew the pump the valve core unscrews also and the air is gone...very annoying. I tried making sure all the valve cores were screwed real tight but it’s still a risk. You can also buy tubes without removable valve cores, but I have a job lot of the removables. I now use CO2 gas and / or a mini pump that pushes onto the valve, rather than screw on.

@stevegeek
@stevegeek 4 жыл бұрын
FatGirl onBike As I said, you can get tubes without removable valve cores, or you can make sure the valve cores are fitted really tight, using something like these from eBay: “Joes No Flats - Presta Valve Key - Tubeless Core Tool - 10 Pieces” for £3.99. Alternatively get a different pump that doesn’t screw onto the valve...that’s what I did.

@@fatgirlonbike7153 You can get an adapter for Schrader valves. It's tiny, and also handy if you want to air up at a gas station. I just keep it screwed onto the hose on the pump. This assumes you have Schrader on one side of the hose like I do.

Good information about having a chain link extractor tool. There is no other way a snapped chain can be repaired without one. When I started cycling in 1985 chain extractor tools were mainly available separately and were quite bulky and heavy. The widely available and relatively inexpensive multi tools available now are excellent. I also carry a short length of chain to attach and revert back to the original length. Some riders still go out without taking a chain extractor.

I think her tool may have a spoke key built into the detachable tyre levers. Spokes are difficult to carry, but you use to be able to get Kevlar string ones. (NOTE. If you haven't thought about this, spokes are in tension only when above the axle on a straight laced wheel, your rear is slightly different as the hub is pulling the rim around from the 3 o'clock position to the 12 o'clock as well as been in tension from 3 to 9... but Kevlar string would still suffice. Oddly, you could do your whole wheel with it. )Kevlar... doesn't stretch.

Thanks for the video +1 for zip ties. As well as a couple of quick links, I usually pack the extra links that I took out of the new chain when I fitted it. It means you can splice those in if any links get damaged. On a longer trip I'll usually carry a folding tyre, as well as a couple of tubes, to keep me going in case of irreparable tyre failure (it's only happened once in nearly 45 years of cycling but kept me riding when it did happen :-) )

Why not go fully tubeless if you have tubeless ready rims? Been riding on tubeless for going on 3 years now and I haven't had a puncture yet that the sealant hasn't plugged up. If I have lost a bit of air pressure I just use the pump to re-inflate. For an extra long ride out in the nowhere I would recommend though to bring a spare tube with you. Although I never have and never have been in any problem yet...

Katie your bike tool should have a spoke key... hint if the wheel hits your frame or close after a snapped spoke.. the side that is close to frame on the rim undue two spokes on either side of the broken one on opposite side, that will keep the wheel true until you get it sorted ... great advice 👍

While out on a ride I spotted a couple stood staring at rear derailleur i stopped to ask if help needed, a pannier rack bolt had worked free so I cable tied up. I heard about the ten pound note trick ( yeah I keep a tenner) but that's for a brew), I'm guessing that I'd cable tie the tube up. Stay safe 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️

Any equipment/tips for cables breaks (gear or breaks) while out riding?
@gardets-7239
@gardets-7239 4 жыл бұрын
@Jonathan Birkett. There is a couple options. 1 is to carry a short piece of shifter cable with the shift head still on it, about 3 inches long, tape the other end so it dose not fray. When the cable breaks, undo the broken cable from the rear mech and run the short piece in the mech with the shift head in cable stop, move it to the gear you need and tighten the cable in the anchor bolt. The other options is to run a zip tie around the cable stop and the cable anchor arm and tighten it so the rear mech, move to it the gear you want. NOTE: in both fixes you will need to turn the cranks while manually moving the rear mech in place. That should get you home.

chain links appropriate to the chain (they can differ - make and speed). proper tyre boot eg Park Tool rather than a wrapper or currency. Disposable gloves (vinyl are tougher). Know how to use the chain tool - standing by the side of the road in cold/wet conditions is not the place to learn. I'd recommend a frame fit pump - more volume/pressure. Practice with the tyre lever. Struggling at the roadside with a tight tyre is not a good option. I use VAR levers - arguably the best one there is.
