I've been bingeing Dexter this week. There are so many laughably inaccurate lockpicking scenes. In an episode I watched today, he inserts a single rake, upside-down, jiggles it up and down a couple of times, and the door just pops open.

Consequence of actually knowing lock picking - I started to pay more attention to detail in Burn Notice after seeing a plausible picking scene with two tools early in the show.

My favorite one is from the spy game splinter cell where they actually have you pick locks in certain missions and it's generally realistic

Capricorn one ('78) made an impression on me, when the three protagonists needed to escape a locked room they didn't touch the lock at all and and they just lifted out the hinge pins. seemed a lot more practical. Not sure if it's been shown in other movies.

Funnily enough I started lock picking a while ago and within 5 minutes i said "man i cant look at the crappy fallout lock picking system the same after this"

I know I'm 5 years late, but as both a picking enthusiast and propmaker, it is my personal goal in life to never let bad lockpicking happen. Currently I'm yet to work on anything where the topic has arisen, but I'm holding out hope! Ahaha :)

question: it's a videogame trope to collect like hundreds of lockpicks and opening a lock either has a chance to break them or directly consumes them, is that based in reality at all? Like maybe in the middle ages where it was all warded locks and super lowgrade steel they actually broke all the time?
@Atlessa4 жыл бұрын
I taught myself lockpicking about 10 years ago, mostly as a 'party trick' because I was baffled when I first learned just HOW unsafe locks these days are, and in all those years I haven't broken a pick, ever. Not saying it can't possibly happen, but this is DEFINITELY a trope that needs to die in a giant digital fireball!

Depends. Some bypass tools like improvised shims or knife/shank type bypass tools (used to bypass some unsheilded pin/tumbler padlocks and combination locks) are prone to breaking if misused or occasionally even if used correctly too many times

I shall address this question in my book, it's a good one! Yes, even with modern kit - great steel, heat treatment, etc - you'll still break a pick occasionally. Especially on a warded rimlock.

I've picked for years and never broken any picks. You're more likely to damage the lock itself than the pick and even then I'd say that person is using way too much brute force and lacks technique. Some locks are more tricky than others though.

@DeviantOllam I know this is an old vid, but at 10:20 your panel talked about a wafer lock that you can press like a button. Immediately took me back to my youth when my mother kept a Lane branded hope chest at the foot of her bed. It had such a lock. Here's a reference photo: werefinish.net/learningcenter/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/lane-locks-300x230.jpg

There is a movie called Slim Susie where they stick a device through the mail slot and it goes up to the deadbolt inside. Turn the knob on the outside and it turns the deadbolt on the inside. I feel that this a real thing they do in Sweden where the movie is made.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory had a great lockpicking mini game. Not 100% accurate, but it's how I learned about pin/tumbler locks and how they are picked pin by pin to the shear line.
@checkmate0585 жыл бұрын
I honestly think the bethesda loockpicking is really good because its about finesse and you have the potential to overdo it and mess up. I splintercell is too button mashy. The hacking minigame was good. Unrealistic but good. I think an ideal would be some mini game that focuses on discovery. You discover how much tension is too much, discover how far is too far before an overset.

What's the name of the documentary of the activists that broke out of an argentina prison? I can't seem to find it anywhere
@DeviantOllam5 жыл бұрын
It wasn't Argentina, at least not the one I'm thinking of. The South African anti-apartheid activist Tim Jenkin and his buddy had their story of escape from a political prison told in this hour-long awesome and harrowing reenactment documentary... kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZojclnSXjs-frqc

the lockpicking minigame in morrowind or oblivion was more realistic, with using the pick to knock the pins up you you could turn the lock, but i think bethesda decided that players couldn't understand what was going on.

18:00 I have a cavity in a tooth which only a special shape of thin wire (such as a paper clip) can reach. Give me a paper clip and I will find something with which to bend it to my shape. I've used window frames, key eyes, the air hole on my vape, etc.
