In this tutorial, we will mode the glass for our toothbrush scene. We will talk about NURBS curves inside of Houdini FX, how to work with them and how to convert them to polygon lines. We will revolve the glass and then make our final adjustments in the polygon world.
These topics are covered:
Discussing the reference
Create in context option
Working with the Curve node
NURBS Curves inside of Houdini FX
Anatomy of a NURBS curve
Adding and removing CVs to a curve
Differences between CVs and Breakpoints
Polylines as curves
Shaping the glass with NURBS
Snapping of Points
Snapping with reference points
Using the Revolve node
Overview of the Revolve options
Working with NURBS vs. Polygons
Resampling of curves
Reverse node
PolyBevel Node
Adding Normals
This tutorial series „Houdini Practice Hour“ is meant for newbies in Houdini FX, who want to learn the basic tasks of modeling, uvs, shading, lighting and rendering on a project base in Houdini FX. I will explain to you step by step the workflows and tools, so you can follow along and then experiment to deepen your knowledge. Learning means „getting your hands dirty“. This series doesn’t give you the most effective, elegant or the "only right way", it’s concepted to give you a solid learning experience. thx for your tutorials! Had been looking for the ability to snap to a single axis of a point like you demonstrated with "Point Snapping" + a single handle dragged to a point. To others: One thing I had to work through is that when working on a NURBS curve with the "Breakpoints" method, it will be looking for the breakpoint to snap to, so it won't want to snap to the actual points you see on the line. Turn your "Points Display" on in the sidebar to see the points it will actually snap to OR use the CV method to snap to points you see directly on the curve. *Edited for clarity

Hi, Thanks for your comment :-) Hm, tested the Point snapping in a Edit-Node for NURBS Curves on the CVs. They snap in Points Mode without activating the Points-Display. Where exactly do you use this workaround? Kind regards, Helge

@@pixeltrain3d Ah sry, I didnt mean to confuse. What I was trying to point out is that on a NURBS curve with the breakpoints method, it is the breakpoints it will snap to, not the interpolated points it puts in between. I was trying to drag to the interpolated points I saw on the curve, as the others were invisible without Points Display on. I will edit my original comment so it doesn't confuse people.

NURBS (either in H18 or 19) are not a good tool for use.

Snapping doesn't seem to work anymore using 18.5.

Yeah, I also had some problems in 18.5 with it ... Hope, sidefx will fix it soon!

I also tried to find a solution. Using the point snapping and the transform handle afterwards worked in my case. Great tutorials pixeltrain, thank you very much!

Hi. Why not bezier method?

Almost half an hour for just a glass. And the curves are very ugly, sorry Helge. Users must think, Houdini is difficult.

Thanks for your honest feedback. This is not a speed modeling tutorial, but explainations.
