Pretty much agree with everything you said here Stu. You either have the 'collector gene' or you don't. My dad was a collector and I've always collected things; stickers, cards and rubbers (erasers - ha) as a kid, then in to rave flyers, and now physical media including (obviously) video games. When I started collecting games, I initially wanted to collect just for the SNES and/or 16-bit era, as it's my favourite period. However I craved the games I played before and after, so decided to collect for the systems I owned throughout the years/decades. I agree it's good to get a collecting 'framework' (as you say) in place, otherwise you could go all over the place with the collecting. Might do a VR myself if I get the chance. Enjoy your weekend, maybe even get some sunshine in this dreadful summer.

“What does it all mean” let’s not go there 😅 collecting is fun but consumerism is a an empty vessel I try to not think to heavy about it as it makes me feel sad. It’s nice to have Hobbies , have something to look forward to, something to talk about be enthusiastic with friends and socialise with and a calming past time outside of work. For some it’s escapism, I’m no acception. I always say to the wife look if something happens and we need money then it all goes. I had to pay a bay lift a sum 6 months to a year ago or so and the games room was the first place we went to to find money . Very real that video from Russ by sounds of it must have passed me by il check it out after this.

This is exactly where I've been. I just got sick of gaming / making videos and watching gaming videos. I did try and force myself into making videos, but it wasn't the same. Taken a 6 month break and I'm only just now started watching gaming youtube videos. I'm starting to get the urge to make a video again now. I don't think I'll ever sell up, but I have thought of focusing the collection more. Great discussion.

Hi Stu, great video as always. For me it's always been video game collecting & lego. Never traded anything in so when new things came out would box the older stuff up and put on the shelf so had room for the new things. Mainly collect boxed consoles now new & old and can't see myself ever stopping. Mostly play xbox/PS5 with the odd day for retro gaming and then I use all mini consoles. Take it easy and hopefully I'll make it to gaming market one day

I was always a collector going back to being able to go to cash converters whilst I was a student and getting 99p snes games. I then started watching you tube back in the day and saw videos by you, Daz, retro Dave etc and that sparked the collector in me again. As you remember Stu when I met everyone for the first time it was so good talking to like minded people who had a passion for retro games and it wasn't just me being a geek!! More for a social aspect. I had no intention of doing videos but I did for a while. Car booting for me was great, the excitement of finding some decent stuff. I did have a time when I started to horde stuff, bought loads of stuff just for the sake of it. Now I get stuff that either means something to me or I remember wanting that when I was younger. I will pay what I think its worth. Dont do videos anymore cause I simply cant be bothered! My main aim at the moment is to find the space for my stuff. Once I get enough room it will be displayed etc. Cant stand all this patreon stuff, dont go near it. If people want to do it then thats their decision but I wont pay to watch 'exclusive content' My viewing habits on you tube has changed in recent years due to this! Good video mate and very interesting topic to discuss. I miss the old days of blackpool, everyone seemed to get on, there was no one falling out, just like minded collectors having a laugh!

So many excellent points, Stu, keeping it real as ever. I think when you've been in the game for as long as we have, we know it's part of us and have accepted it. I'll do a bit of fine tuning with the hobby here and there as most of us do but generally, the same old systems I've always loved remain the ones I still love buying for and occasionally playing now. It's always been about the nostalgia, it's a word I always come back to. I've been inactive for ages regarding vids and as you say, you have to be feeling it otherwise it's forced and people aren't stupid, they'll see through it. Sometimes it's worth just sitting back, taking stock and recharging the batteries.

Interesting stuff! Collecting must fulfil some kind of psychological need. What do people who don’t collect anything do! Maybe they are the same people who have no internal monologue, and they sit there quite happily with no thoughts or pressures! I’ve always collected something - comics, statues, action figures, Lego, trading cards, laserdiscs, vhs. I usually go mad on something, spend a fortune on it, then cool on it and move to something else. I’ve sold whole collections, so not a hoarder, I’m sure it could tip over into that though! Also got into big debt through collecting at one point, something I would never do again, but that was definitely a downside. When I started collecting games I bought all sorts of stuff, but for me buying systems that I didn’t have before didn’t really work. It just doesn’t hit the same, I’ve got to at least have nostalgia for the system. I’ve thought about theming my collection around Sony, just collecting for the PlayStations. It still leaves plenty to go for, but puts a boundary around it. Anything earlier can be emulated; and anything that can’t be emulated, I just won’t have it. Got to build up to that decision though!
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
Oooh i like that thought process Justin, they must have an outlet for the same urges we have as collectors but its vented another way? Yeah you'll always collect something at least you recognise it! I get the need for it to be nostalgic it nice that everyone has different pulls!

Really good vid stu, points well made. I've got my own thoughts and might do some form of VR myself. I still think there's life in the hobby but it might need to evolve for some people including myself. For me retro gaming has it's place and always will even if i'm shifting my focus onto other things. I think a lot depends on when someone started collecting and if it was in the last 5-10 years (such as it was for me) then there is a glass ceiling on going for full sets because of the prices. Anyone who made good headway on their collections prior to what, 2015/2016, they either have full sets or they are within touching distance so the momentum and motivation is there to keep going. For someone like me who got back into it too late, it will never happen so i focus on what i consider the essentials and getting them in the best condition i can even when it means spending a bit more. I'm happy enough with that. Ad for youtube it has given me the chance to meet some good lads, make some new pals and that's made it all worth while.
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
Yeah another excellent point there mate re the glass ceiling although there are ways and means if you are determined and it doesnt involve begging/grifting off people online to get them, but does mean putting some time/work effort yourself (which you could argue becomes a hobby in and of itself) Defo get a vid done, there really isnt a right nor wrong answer and at the minute i think we just about have the ability to have an opinion although thats slowly being taken away!

I’ve not got a huge collection by any standards, but when you see if all in tubs and boxes it really brings it all home, or at least for me it does. It’s then that I question all of it and why am I buying all this stuff. What need in my life is all this stuff bringing me. Existential questions for sure lol. I’m still in the process of getting a gaming space set up having yesterday been let down by some builders who were due to do some work on the bedroom. Though I do know now that I’ve got too much stuff to go in the room and that I don’t want to look cluttered in there. I want a nice clean looking room that I can chill in and enjoy playing my games. Anyways apologies for not having been in your comments section of late, but I have been watching and I looking forward to seeing you at Blackpool and the BCGF, which I’m hoping to stall out with, with Eddie. It's been a big journey for you building up the collection to what it is today, great to have such a good chunk of the journey documented too. Re the selling in bulk, I do agree with you but I also think there's more variables to consider than just losing a sum of cash to a dealer, there's the cost of events, sure if you've a boot of stuff then they are great but if you've pallets full then the cost of stalls for the length time needed to shift it all would run into a lot of money in my case definitely thousands as you know so that needs to be accounted for, selling in bulk gets rid of the things that are not so desirable and hard to sell, I've always said that for me the markets will end, hopefully Nottingham will be my last one hahaha I definitely don't regret shifting any of the bulk lots over the years, however doing deals to certain individuals though is another matter entirely, can't remember the exact quote you gave daz but it was along the lines of vultures, did make me laugh lol and think you may be right with what's happened, absolutely no chance anyone will ever take anything from me without paying first apart from the odd person I know shares the same values in doing the right thing and not throwing someone's trust back in their face like yourself, it's a shame in all honesty. You really did me at the end, going to show the indiana jones figures and they are on the top shelf side facing, I thought you was going to unveil a glass cabinet with them all on display hahaha

Agree with most, if not all of what you said there, Stu. As soon as it became a thing that you could make money on KZbin, that signalled the downward spiral for what I enjoy watching. Even if monetisation didn't exist, the external platforms that allow channels to have memberships would have still resulted in the same thing. It is quite a sad state of reflection of the world and social media that a lot of the channels that do well are some of the shallowest, mind numbingly stupid, generic or taking advantage types. That goes across all genres, not just retro video game collecting. Just look at some of the highest subbed channels. That's just my personal point of view. In terms of the retro gaming scene niche, particularly the UK - I've watched KZbin from 2007, UK retro gaming from approximately 2013/14. At this point in time I don't think I've ever been as disinterested and watch a mere fraction of what I used to. There may be more decent channels out there that are more akin to what I enjoyed in say 2016, but it just isn't the same anymore for me. 5-10 years ago were the peak years, and I keep stressing it, this is my own feeling and opinion, nothing against newer channels. Collecting retro games for me now has slowed right down, and I want to trim a lot of the excess. Collecting for over a decade, my tastes and interests are bound to change and evolve. That's ok. You mention that collecting is in your genes, I think so too. I've collected all my life, so that won't be any different.
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
oh mate again another topic i could rant about the actual decline in terms of the channels i watch that are "retro" related its a fraction of what it used to, i do think some people are lost in the noise others sadly are so desperate for a bit of fame they sell themselves short and copy the bigger channels and so dont even get a look from me, the thumbnail/title says enough for me!
@Sinisteve4 ай бұрын
Can’t disagree with much of that mate. I have different views on collecting now for myself, I started collecting (buying games not necessarily to play) around 2015 (properly) I think and it was definitely KZbin inspired…the way I always looked at it was that is self sustaining as you know me I could always hunt a bargain and loved a bundle…I’d never really worked out values of my collection but ballpark would have been 80-90k I reckon, and it probably owed just over half of that. So technically it was just investment on my passion, not that the values was the incentive it was just a great way to justify it. But, now I’m not sure it’s a great investment, as to get maximum profit it would take so much time, testing, listing, posting…all things I hate doing. I’ve now cut the collecting right down as my game room was just so packed and I can’t really justify the investment anymore. I think I’ve always been more of a gamer at heart anyway, and I’ll never stop tinkering with setups etc So easy to lose focus though I’ve got so many fellow collectors as mates making want to grab games they’ve found🙈
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
Oh 100% the way to collect is to ensure the items cost you as little a possible (its the only way unless you have very deep pockets) See thats another good point that people dont take into account when they buy all this as an "investment" as you know yourself its far easier to buy it than to sell it!

Fantastic video mate, I do find it strange you don’t collect for the 8Bit micros ? I’m not a huge collector for them but I’ll always pick up a speccy game if it’s one I’ve not owned before. Your videos since you stopped the bootys have been much better and I like your going for the cream now. You’ve got to be extremely lucky to find anything now a car boot fair. Take it easy mate.
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
Oh mate i had loads of speccy/c64 stuff (i still buy it when i see it) i just realised early on i couldnt have it all, id love to have all the miggy games too but you have to draw a line somewhere, although im in a FB group about point and clink adventure games and the urge to buy some just to have them (as i didnt as a kid) is bloody killing me hahahaha Yeah i think my days of weekly booters are done, they fulfilled a need for many a year and really helped with the collection, but id end up near hoader status with no money again and a load of stuff to try and move on, while missing out on the items i really want (due to having no money spent it at the booter on tat!)

For me my vids are for me….logging my journey, but also sharing some of the passion with fellow minded folks. Chatting shit about shit. The only thing I would like to change is getting to some events …but I’ve had valid reasons for not doing much on that as family always come first. Take care buddy. Oh by the way, one interesting topic for future vids to document your journey which was touched by your vid and also Eddie Rolllercore is how the collection has changed direction. I see that ps2 and ps1 were thinned out in yours and I think you got rid of your original Xbox games….needs must for space and money. Do you still have less passion for those systems? I know Eddie got rid of many of his Saturn Japanese shooters but my gut tells me secretly he would want them given his love for shooters. I have teased him on getting back on that wagon.
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
Hey Nick, exactly that mate and for me thats a solid honest reason and you welcome folk to join the journey! Yeah its a space issue for sure, i have less attachment to the ps2 than the ps1 but it was really a space thing and perhaps just having a more concise collection of those 2 systems suits. The OG xbox i actually swapped/traded with 2 other YT at the time, Patrick sparks and Phil Kett, for Saturn, neo geo AES snes and other bits!

@@tootyukSounds like you did really well on the trade mate, although I do like the original Xbox and it’s finally getting some positive recognition which it deserves as it’s a good system with many great titles.😊

Really interesting watch Stu and massively agreed on much of it. I had no idea Bithead had even monetised, I stopped watching years ago, just found his spiel a bit tedious after a while. Looking back I think the main reason I stopped collecting was the magic of nostalgia started to wear off. That and I wanted money for pinball 😂. All the best dude
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
Well he doesnt monetise now as i think YT stop him but hes been on the beg for a few years now, perhaps folk misunderstood its not the monetizing per say (as YT pay that) its when you grift off the people that are watching i just think its wrong

I wonder what Arcade impossible is doing now. Lol arcade collecting YT was amazing back in the day as it really did seem impossible. That was out childhood that we cannot replicate as easy as console collecting. Looks like we both went the rant routes then. Haha. It's a shame as it seems like to be a collector these days, you have to follow trends and try to appease other people. Which makes it hard for people that may have ideas similar to ourselves to make YT videos. As they feel like they have to be like the others. I miss the days where people really didn't give a hoot how many people watched and just wanted to document their journey. It started with all the people adding retro to their channel names and pigeonhole themselves from the start. People nowadays forget people watch YT for the person, it's just what their "content" is about is just what helps break the ice with common grounds. I told you a true collector is just an addict, and as soon as video game collecting doesn't give that same buzz we look some where else... not saying we would sell up completely. I wish I could have kept everything I sold. But at least it's a more sustainable addiction to have than others as it can be used in more productive ways. I don't mind 360 collecting. But it reminds me when people all of a sudden went mad for MegaDrive after nes and snes games got too expensive to collect. Lol
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
Yeah he was a good watch, i think perhaps the videos became too much, heavily edited and wasnt he getting involved in putting machines on location? Indeed they've all hoped onto the CEX bandwagon now (cheap 360/ps3) games to make videos with, shame as you say they might actually have made some good vids if they didnt just copy someone else!

Great vid this Stu, liked the way you mixed the two VR's(was more a Russ VR than Rodgey I think😁). Aswell as giving some random thought about the hobby. I've been thinking of doing a random musings vid for a while, might do Sunday but might not, haha i can ramble on a tangent and then get completely lost what I'm planning on rambling on about😂 Born in '76!? You're just a youngster😉

I would love to see a regular series of Tooty's top 10 s 😂 Isn't it great being a middle-aged kid though, We get to have all the things we wanted as Kids But a poor parents just couldn't buy us, I'm not saying I'm rich now but it's hard to say no to yourself 😂 The best tubers are the ones that just do it for fun or a hobby, You're absolutely right it often happens as soon as someone gets monetized It becomes a business, A job and Boring, Some of my favourite channels Hardly get anybody watching them, They have no schedule And just put out content when they feel like it, I got a lot of respect for people like yourself Who can just sit in front of the camera And speak honestly , It's something I would feel uncomfortable doing myself Been on camera With the things I own behind and around me, It's pretty brave to be in front of a camera and just be yourself, I agree you guys are the pioneers, I think it's great that you Stool out Let me move things on that way, Ross Doesn't owe anybody anything, I watch he's very very very long videos Mainly because of his personality , You're right though There's a lot of channels doing the same kind of thing And being really successful is just the luck of the draw, Only watched half your video so far And I think my comment is already too long so I will stop now 😂 Really enjoy listening to what you had to say

Hahahaha i think id get bored of my 10's after 1 video and people make a whole channel out of them! Oh being able to buy stuff i never had is really the pull for me, if your unfortunate to have had a childhood like that you wouldnt understand (dont get me wrong probably did me the world of good not being a spoilt brat) i'm sure Russ will sort himself out hes just in that place that some people find themselves in sadly.

I am 52 years old, i regret that i gave away all my ps1 games only to find out later that some that i use to have now is worth much money on internett. Great collection, you must be a millionare collecting all these stuff.... norway send`s a greeting... love the indiana jones figures, why do you not open them? my guess they loose value????? but you only live once my guess

Oh no mate, that would knaw at me knowing that, i bet you had some real classics too! Lol im far from a millionaire this is 20+ years of collecting (less all my boxed consoles which are in storage no room) I didnt open the indy figures because they're actually not that great the boxes are superb and yeah i suppose partly value wise (although they are massed produced so i doubt they will be worth much in time) Norway you say! Wow, you certainly hit home with me. Most of the channels are so full of shite. I've been collecting since 94 and I have less games than youtubers that have been going 3 years. To me, a good channel is one that is informative...Show me something new, show me something that I can join in with, show me something about you... But don't make videos of how you're rearranging your house full of games because you've run out of room, or bragging you got a game for £1 and its worth 10k. Every thumbnail looking like someone has been grabbed at the crotch with headlines like "Amazing" "Insane" "Holy grail". I actually wonder if I did a channel if anyone would like it, since I boycott Xbox consoles, Wii-U and Wii. Can you survive on youtube with these bias's? I am not really a collector, I have just been going since 94 and not sold about 85% of my things. I think collectors are people who are building a library wall or full sets. Lets face it nobody in the UK is going to make a collection as big as those in the USA because their homes are super huge and they have nothing else to do except hoard materialistic stuff. Its the perfect environment to make big collections. Most of the youtubers aren't as old as us so don't have that nostalgia that we have.
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
Hahahahaha this is true they are just that mate, all carbon copy clones too boot! Oh dont get me started on the bloody thumbnails all stupid grinning, shocked expressions i did go through a phase of taking the p#ss out of them but slowly started to realise perhaps folk dont realise i am!! Yeah the American folks defo have the edge over us in terms of space thats for sure, plus they have a huge pool to pull from for items!

Wannabe Jake Pauls but they are more like Gerf Smalls 🤪 Perfect advice to Russ,loft it or get it out the way,i can not make a vid for months & then some weeks im the mood to make 1 a day 😂when you feel it is the key 👊🏻good talk

Bithead1000 was one of my favourite channels when he went out and filmed himself buying at garage sales and thrift stores. He always tried to make it entertaining. But big cheap retro finds dried up like it has for everyone else. I dont watch him anymore either due to his new direction. I tried youtube vlogging years ago and got recognised while i was out and about. It was then I realised i wasn't meant for youtube. But i never stopped collecting, probably never will. There should be a tag created people could put on there video to flag it as collector friendly content rather than money grabbing. Or a central list of collecter friendly KZbinrs. Maybe a facebook group.
@tootyuk4 ай бұрын
Yeah same as Ian i thought BH, Ryan right now, Edt118 all awesome channels from BITD but BH just went down the money route (some say that was always his goal) but his earlier stuff is genius. Yeah perhaps if YT put them all behind a paywall and the rest that do it for the love of it not money are on the "Free" side?
