The bottom line is that all the potential in the world doesn't mean a thing if you let it die or if shit happens. Great choice for number one. I don't think enough people today know this, but it wasn't always that easy to pass for 3000 yards or throw for over 30 touchdowns per season. Dan Marino was destroying records long before the NFL loosened up its rulebook to make life more difficult for defenders. In just his second season, he threw for over 5000 yards (the first QB to do so) and tossed 48 touchdowns (the old record was 36). Then in 1995, he broke every major career passing record (completions, yards, touchdowns, etc.). At the time of his retirement, his numbers were absolutely insane, and if not for the NFL making it easier to throw the ball, who knows how long they would've stood?

I think you could do a list for each of the major professional sports because there are way too many players in each who never won any championships who deserved at least one.
@Milordvega8 жыл бұрын
"I think you could do a list for each of the major professional sports because there are way too many players in each who never won any championships who deserved at least one." Agree 100%. So many great players in team sports have missed winning a title that it would be real tough to limit it to just 10 players. Just on this list, I would put John Stockton in it, over guys like Barkley and Iverson, since Stockton is no less than the all-time assists and steals leader. But there were already a lot of NBA players on the list so I guess they decided not to include him. In other sports, you have all these baseball Hall of Famers such as Tony Gwynn, Rod Carew, Jim Rice, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, Robin Yount. The NFL had Earl Campbell, Randy Moss, Steve Largent, Terrell Owens, LaDainian Tomlinson and others. I am surprised the lady announcer (Canadian) said that most NHL greats had at least one Stanley Cup title, since earlier decades saw the Montreal Canadians and NY Islanders and Edmonton Oilers dominating from the Stanley Cup, this limiting the chances of many to win it. Not just Marcel Dionne. I can name Eddie Giacomin, Pat Lafontaine, Jean Ratelle, Cam Neely, Rod Gilbert from recent and distant past. So a list for each sport would be great. I also think that in time, you can also include players from North American professional soccer once it is more established. You could limit it only to titles earned while playing for North American clubs, not elsewhere suich as Europe. . An amazing piece of trivia is that all-time greats like George Best and Johan Cryuff and (more recently) Thierry Henry played some years for US clubs without ever winning a title for them.

For all of the international soccer (futbol) fans this debate with you is getting old and going nowhere. Soccer is popular because poor countries that lack things like food and water can chase a ball, pretend to be hurt, and play keep away with your feet. This past superbowl that lacked offensive intrigue is the highest rated show ever, and that includes tracking the viewership of others. There's 7 billion people world wide, you overestimate your numbers because while just about everyone plays soccer most fans only tune in to their country's games. a lot of games don't even get broadcast on TV because even internationally if we aren't playing who gives a fuck, but of course there is radio for those that have it and care. You claim that america only cares about American sports which is true because those sports feature the best athletes in the U.S and the rest of the world who excel at that sport. NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB all have the best and most accomplished athletes that can play other sports but play the other top athletes the world has to offer. The best soccer players are great soccer players, but a lot of them come from countries that your choice is to make it in soccer or live in a shack on hay beds. Multiple leagues and seasons mean you don't even have to be that good to play soccer, just one of the best in your little corner of the world, whereas in America you're the best of the best.

Moe Diaz dude American soccer players don't hold a candle to soccer players around the world. Yes there's a lot of leagues but when you consider the millions and millions of players trying to make it as pros, you can't say that anybody can make it. It's like this, for every million basketball players, there's probably 50 million soccer players so obviously more of them will make it as professionals because there are just so many players. Your arguments are also flawed for the fact that Japan is the best baseball team in the world yet many of them don't come over to play in the MLB.

Throwing in Paul Kariya. Kid was probably one of the most gifted pure offensive weapons. Had he not been riddled with injuries so much...damn.

As a Caps fan, I half-expected that when you said "we're not including current players," you showed Ovechkin. This year COULD be the year....though we still have a ways to go this season.

I know he's not on this list, and call it whatever you want, but Todd Helton should get an honorable mention. He could rake, played amazing defense, and was the only player on the Rockies people could name for a good long while.

Tim Brown should be at least an honorable mention. He was a fantastic wide receiver that went to the NFL Pro Bowl nine times and had an appearance in Super Bowl XXXVII, but unfortunately, was on the losing team. Receptions: 1,094 Receiving yards: 14,934 All-purpose yards: 19,683 Touchdowns: 105

Ernie Banks should be on the list because he has the MLB record for most games played without a play-off appearance. I believe it's a North American sports record too.

Not many people know just how good AI was that year. Not only carrying his team to the finals, but took Game 1 vs one of the best teams of all time the '01 Lakers. They're record that postseason was 16-1, AI did what even the mighty spurs couldn't

I think you have to give Mats Sundin a mention, as much as I'm a Leafs fan, as well as a huge Sundin fan, I'm disappointed that he was stuck on the Leafs for the majority of his career. If there was any player who deserved it, it was Sundin, great player and total class act

It's tough to see Ernie Banks as an honorable mention instead of on the real list. He won MVP twice, beating out players like Hank Aaron and Willie Mays, while playing on one of the worst teams in the league. He played his entire career with the Cubs and never even made it to the postseason. Had he played on any other team, he likely would have at least made it to the postseason, and possibly even had a World Series appearance, maybe even a win. But through it all, he never lost his competitiveness or his positive attitude. Even in his Hall of Fame induction speech, he proclaimed, "Let's play two." He loved playing ball. That's why he should have been included on the list. But, I understand, it's a crowded list.

What about Bo Jackson? I know he had a very short NFL career from 1987-1990, but he was undoubtedly one of the best athletes of all time. He dominated both Baseball and Football. He should be on this list.

Good list, although I was hoping to see Reggie Miller make the cut. The 90's were pretty rough for (in terms of championships) teams not named the Chicago Bulls.

What I find amazing about the fact that Ted Williams has never won a World Series people consider him the greatest baseball player who ever lived. I can see why the Hall of Fame is another mission accomplished in an athlete, they've worked hard every time.

Ken Griffey jr had one of the most beautiful swings in baseball, Dan Marino was one of my fave QB's to watch growing up and to me Barry Sanders was the best RB of all time(retired after 10yrs), but I wish my boy Andre Johnson could have at least made it to the Championship or hell the AFC Championship, but sadly he had to play in my hometown of Houston, Tx with over half a dozen bad QB's and not much help. Poor dude!
