Street Fighter II deserves its own list, no competition. It was awesome, it was the most popular arcade game in the early 90's, it was so cool, I remember kids crowding around that game in an arcade, everyone had their favourite character, young kids, old kids, grown ups, everyone played it. It was so advanced for its time, the sound affects, everything was perfect. I still have such great memories of that game in an arcade, hearing these sounds takes me back there. It still looks awesome now, imagine being back in 1991 and that was in arcades, I remember back then, it was great. Also popular games right near SFII were Golden Axe, and Shinobi, good games too. Sometimes when the arcade was very quiet the guy at the front desk would give me and my friend some "free credits", he'd open the game and click "ding ding ding" 3 or 4 credits, great memories.

for real dude. Mortal Kombat was loved by many, but you couldn't play that series if you already played street fighter 2, felt like a childs game compared to SF2. It's now 2023 and it still blows my mind that an arcade game could take THAT much skill compared to the others in the genre

Street Fighter 2 made me get into fighting in public. I played it a lot until I could actually replicate their moves. Then I travelled the globe bashing people. I waited outside of supermarkets & churches, I dragon punched & hurricane kicked many people who walked near me & that’s what I’ve been doing ever since. I could never quite figure out how to throw a fireball..... So I reverted to throwing fuel on people and lighting a match, but they all ran away before I could get the matches lit.

Cant have it all. I'd argue that games like cadillacs and dinos are just clones of other games that are pretty much the same thing with different skins. And some of those SNK fighters were good, but cant touch the magic of playing street fighter 2 or mortal kombat 1-2 back in the day.

Agreed, Street Fighter 2 changed everything, before this game everybody was taking turns trying to beat each other's high score. When Street Fighter 2 came out, video games became very competitive, one vs one. Now we have competitive games everywhere, especially multi-player first person shooters.

Some many amazing moments in that game: Blasting enemies with and Anti-Tank gun in a bathroom, Having a massive fight with Player 2 at the end of the game, Hog tieing enemies with handcuffs. Only game where I ran out of ammo while shooting a boss and then killed him by throwing the gun at him.

I lived in a seaside resort during the 90's, and I would spend many a day (and night) down the arcades, honing my skills. Whilst I recognise all the games in this list, very few of them were the most popular from my recollections. Although Sega were on the wane slightly, after owning the arcades during the 80's, their R&D department, AM2, still rolled off hit after hit in the Arcades. G:LOC, Virtura Racing, Daytona USA, Virtura Fighters, Sega Rally (AM5), Crazy Taxi (AM3), and the Virtura Cop series, which was arguably a far superior light shooter than Time Crisis. Then there were games like Ridge Racer, Tekken 3, Final Fight, Sunset Riders (criminally overlooked), and such the like. We could also not talk about arcade games in the 90's without mentioning SNK, and their stable of fighters like King of the Fighters, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, and Samurai Showdown. They also create Puzzle Bobble.

CrAZY TaXi!!! I worked at a place that had the sit-down cabinet (not sure if a standing one was made), and I had the keys! Not typically into racers, this one utterly consumed me! Just a blast, and everything that defines the “Arcade Experience” turned up to 11. I’d usually play for an hour each day when my shift ended. No joke, when I’d get back into my real car with adrenaline still redlining, I’d have to fight the instinct to go loco and remind myself that I wasn’t playing the video game! I was so amped! Then something magical happened: the Dreamcast conversion came home. A very (very) near 1:1 exact replica of the arcade. You’d only notice a single pixel’s difference if played side-by-side with the Arcade machine. DC lost a slight bit of unimportant lighting effects here and there, but the DC version came with the exact arcade map, plus an “Original” course over twice the size of the Arcade, adding insane jumps, extended stretches of freeway to open it up full bore. Many loved the “Crazy Box”, full of training tips, but in the form of things like bowling with your taxi to learn skidding out and drifting techniques. Me and my 2 pals played it together nearly every day for hours! The sequel wasn’t nearly as good- way to many city blocks to slow you down and frustrate you. The multi-passenger was so/so and the hydraulic jumps were nothing special. Just my opinion!

Time Crisis II was infinitely better, seeing as two could play together and maximize the body count. But you would lose points if you accidentally shot your partner!

Those are truly the best games of the 1990's. Nearly every game on this list i played on home console or arcade cabinet in the 90's. Classic games and all still very playable today.

my grandfather was an avid bowler and took me along for wed night bowling match ups at the old Fiesta Lanes. It was truly a treat especially when he would give me a wad of singles to blow in the arcade..I can remember being young and obnoxious hogging up ALL of these classic games at one time or another in the old run down Fiesta Lanes...Good times...

I worked at my university arcade during the nineties while going to school. This list is pretty spot on but one glaring omission. Dance dance Revolution hit mid-late 90's and it should probably be #2 behind street fighter.
