@@taramcdonough3599 There's a trick to use with pasta and rice that helps when using it to stretch meals if you or a family member are diabetic. Pasta and rice are full of carbs and can raise your blood sugar too high. But there is a way to turn them into resistant carbs which are metabolized more slowly, and don't have such a negative impact on your blood sugar. All you have to do is: 1. Don't over cook them. Overcooking unlocks more of the starch, making it turn to sugar in your digestive tract much quicker than al dente pasta or rice. 2. Whole Wheat pastas and brown rice are naturally more resistant, and have a lower impact on your sugar levels than the refined white versions. Especially when you follow the THIRD trick. 3. Don't use it right after cooking, refrigerate them completely first. This turns them into resistant carbs, and the interesting and useful part is that, once they have been refrigerated, that LOCKS them in as resistant carbs. Even if you reheat them, they're STILL resistant carbs. Just be sure to keep them in WATER in the fridge to keep them from sticking together. A quick plunge back into boiling water will quickly reheat them for use in hot dishes, or you can use them cold in pasta salads. It's best to use long grain rice reheated though, because when it's cold the starches crystalize and make the grains hard, and unpleasant to chew. That's why you should never use it to make a cold dish like rice pudding, use short grain (sticky) rice instead for cold applications.

When my husband and I first got married we lived in a townhouse with street parking. He was a truck driver and wouldn’t be home till the following morning. I heard a noise downstairs in the middle of the night. Terrified I called 911, while on the phone I looked farther up the street and saw our car and realized my husband was home. Just then the police were banging on the door. I came running downstairs to open it as my husband walked from the kitchen with a bowl of fruit cocktail.😂 Well I haven’t bought any since and that’s been about 35 years now but anytime I hear fruit cocktail that’s all I can think about 😂😂

Oh Kim!! That is too funny!! I have to share that many years ago, our neighbors were traveling for an extended period of time and asked us to watch their house. Well one night, I noticed someone walking around the house - inside - with a flashlight. I immediately called our local police department who came right away. We met them outside and pointed to where we saw the light. The police walked all around the outside of the house and saw no area of break in but then they saw the flashlight from inside so they rang the doorbell! We saw the front hall lights go on quickly and the door was opened by a man in his pajamas holding the flashlight under his arm and a bowl with a spoon in the other. He said that he was friends with the owners and was staying there with his wife and didn't want to disturb her so he used the flashlight to get some ice cream in the kitchen. The police contacted the owners and all checked out!! We all had a good laugh after that but your fruit cup and my ice cream go hand in hand when it comes to thoughts! Love, Mary

Mary, I have been shopping at Aldi for more than 20 years. The comment about package sizes is worth noting. I am super angry at Jello brand they have changed the amount of pudding and gelatin in their boxes. It used to be 4 ounces in small boxes and 8 ounces in large boxes. It is now 3.2-3.4 ounces in the small package and 6 ounces in large boxes. This makes it necessary to open 2 small boxes and weigh the contents on my kitchen scale to get the proper amount for the recipes I grew up with using these products. Please just increase the prices slightly and leave the packaging alone. Campbells soup is playing the same game. The can is the same size but contains less soup, its now down to 10 ounces in many cans.
@JennySimon206
@JennySimon206 2 жыл бұрын
No way! Holy sh*T that is sacrilege! To make you have to use 2 boxes and weight it out! Wtf! That pisses me off beyond belief. It's not that they don't know. There is a term for this shrinking packages thing but I never thought they would so it with something so many recipes use that exact amount. I'm just floored. Never thought about that aspect of the shrinking thing. Not sure why.

Welcome to the reality of what's been happening for years and years with the products. I wouldn't get angry. It's not worth that much trouble. You just have to adjust. But I know what you're saying... I was just watching the other video about how to single layer layer freeze certain items to pop them into a bag for your freezer so you waste not. One night. And there are ways to organize your freezer with rubber bands around products to make them smaller that works well in the organization. I always pray when hurricane season comes to Florida that I won't lose my freezer food. So far so good this year but knock wood. So thank you so much to this lovely lady. With her stocking and restocking plans. Sometimes she's far too organized for me but hey we can all dream.

Dear Mary, I live in Germany and the majority of prices approximately translate to the Euro prices at our Aldi stores, some even less. A lot of people are concerned about making meets end these days and about further inflation. I was just at Aldi yesterday. I didn't buy much. I live alone and have too much in my refrigerator I need to eat and not let it ruin right now. I did buy the can chicken and some cheese sticks for my granddaughter. I am not at the homemade stage yet I still buy too much processed food. Unfortunately my Mother never taught us to cook we were always outside or in our rooms listening to music. My daughter does like whole milk yogurt so I would like to learn to make that for her. I will look for that video. TYFS all your tips and recipes. I am going back to the town where Aldi is Friday and will look for some of the bargins you shared. Stay Safe and Have a Blessed Week.

My husband and I LOVE cherries so when I saw those jars at Aldi I grabbed 3 of them. I was thrilled to find them and in glass jars to boot! A definite pantry item to stock up on for us! 😋🍒 Oh and I buy their canned fruits and veggies by the case! Their canned peaches are wonderful!

The Benner Green Tea bags make more than a single cup (coffee cup size). I get 4 servings. I add a little local honey. Delicious! I also buy the refried beans, Alaskan Salmo. Aldi's, by me, is so much less expensive and Walmart. I go with a list, always! It is important to know your pantry and shop with a list. We are blessed to have a LARGE apple orchard near me that is free to pick! I make applesauce and apple butter. The grandkids help me pick. We use our Aldi reusable bags to carry the apples. I like sprouting seeds. My favorites are alfalfa, mung, carrot microgreen seeds and Sprout House mix (French lentil, fenugreek, radish, and clover). I enjoy canning chicken and beef and making homemade yogurt.

I appreciate your videos on what foods to stock in a prepper pantry. However, I noted that many of the foods are high carbs and high glycemic, I can't eat any of those kinds of foods due to diabetes. It would be helpful to list a stock up list of foods for people like me who have to stay low carb or no carb. Thanks for your website, I really enjoy it.
@MarysNest

Hi Sidney, I understand completely. Probably sticking with the protein foods, the olive oil, the condiments, and the parboiled rice (it's low on the glycemic index) would probably be best. Plus, although the beans contain carbs, they are also high in fiber and might be something you could eat in small amounts or you could store them in a mylar bag with an 02 absorber for real emergencies. Hope this helps. Love, Mary

Hey Sidney, if you shop Aldi's you will notice they have a lot of keto options. Keto options are generally low to no sugar and lower carbs, great for diabetics. Aldi's has stevia packets that have a very low glycemic index, but don't get the bags of Stevia!! I did that, it contains maltodextrin which will definitely not be good for diabetics!! They also have protein wraps and keto cookies and crackers that are all low carb. I'm borderline type 2 and also have to watch carbs and sugar so I've been doing keto. It has really helped lower my A1c. Aldi's actually has more low carb keto options than any of the walmarts near me. Hope this helps!!
@merrycraker1262
@merrycraker1262 2 жыл бұрын
Just to add that most of the keto options s are made from almond or unsweetened coconut flour, which is low carb, not wheat flour. Not good if you have nut allergies but if not, these are good options.

Aldi is my favorite place for backup food. My husband and I were both sick back in February. It’s just us in the house. Neither one of us felt like doing more than the microwave and my homemade was frozen. I opened my Aldi broth, poured in a mug and warmed it in the microwave to sip on for 2-3 days until we were up and around.

Hi Kris, I know what you mean. It's just not the same fun now. These days it's more about..."can this fit in my budget" versus..."this looks fun and new, let's give it a try." These days it's the staples and maybe a few extras but there is not a lot of room for splurges. But this will all pass in time. We just need to hang in there for now and shop and cook as economically as possible. Love, Mary

I've started using homemade yogurt with milk at a 1:1 proportion as a buttermilk substitute in baking. Previously had used almost one cup milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar which sits for 10 minutes before use in baked items. I now prefer the milk and yogurt combo for fluffier pancakes.

Those products strive to be clean and they're free from chemicals and other questionable substances that are commonly used in food manufacturing. I've been shopping at ALDI for decades. It was about 8 or 9 years ago that ALDI switched over and began to offer a line of clean, organic products. They also made a commitment to remove as many chemicals and dyes as well as HFCS from all of their products throughout the store as possible.
