Norman Watt Roy is a stunning bassist, and his bass playing on Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick is so funky. Another simple classic that’s been performed by a few artists over the years is on the song Tighten Up by Archie Bell, but the version I find particularly fine is on the Maceo Parker and the James Brown Band version, there is just something really raw and on that live version. So simple but so toe tapping

Here are some of my favorite bass lines and riffs of all time. I tried to keep my list to just 10 songs like Claudio's list, but there's just too many good bass lines/riffs to keep it to just 10. So instead, I made two separate top 10 lists. The first list is bass lines/riffs that were played on bass guitars. The second list is bass lines/riffs that were played on synthesizers. 1. The Time - "777-9311" 2. Patrice Rushen - "Forget Me Nots" 3. Michael Jackson - "Get on the Floor" 4. Teena Marie - "Square Biz" 5. Mtume - "Juicy Fruit" 6. The Whispers - "And the Beat Goes On" 7. A Taste of Honey - "Boogie Oogie Oogie" 8. Queen - "Another One Bites the Dust" 9. Young MC - "Bust a Move" 10. Chic - "Good Times" 1. Michael Jackson - "Leave Me Alone" 2. Janet Jackson - "When I Think of You" 4. Phil Collins - "Sussudio" 5. Harold Faltermeyer - "Axel F" 6. Harold Faltermeyer - "Fletch Theme" 7. Michael Jackson - "Another Part of Me" 3. Nu Shooz - "I Can't Wait" 8. Madonna - "Into the Groove" 9. Michael Jackson - "Billie Jean" 10. Michael Jackson - "Bad"

Try the intro to Rush's "Body Electric" and the Police's - Bring on the Night - Gateshead live (on that Steinberger) - Those are the best. Other good ones are MJ's "The way you make me feel" and overall "Cruel Summer" of Banarama. In Jazz it would be Stanley Clarke live on "Brazilian Love Song". Another is the line in Art of Noise's "Close to the Edit" and when it was played live on the bass by Trevor Horn who also helped on Yes with Owner of Lonely Heart.

Cool - such an honor seeing you do a video on your top 10 basslines 😎 World is full of great bass lines - so I will not "propose" one and I'm just enjoying your selection. 😍 Somebody might say it's a bit addy-driven - but in fact I came to your channel in lockdown times when I was searching keyboard-bass-stuff. So you inspired me to take also keys into consideration ... and guess - in my new band - I will also have a tiny keyboard for playing synth (or maybe upright?) bass sounds and I will check out this plugin ... thanks for your inspiration! So great videos! Keep going. Best regards, Stefan 😘

Not Chic inspired...it was sampled, spliced, and looped directly from Chic's "Good Times" track. Some say they had a studio bassist copy the bassline note for note, and there wasn't any sampling. However, you can clearly hear other parts of the "Good Times" rhythm section during the rap "breaks" within Rappers Delight. Who knows...I do remember that Chic was eventually compensated, and their names were added to the record.

the other two comments so far are almost correct but according to the wiki 17 year old bassist and drummer recorded those for 15 mins straight without any mistakes because it was before samplers (or at least the guy credited with recording it says, idk when samplers came around)

For me it´s Cabaret Voltaire "Sensoria". 1:28 in the 4 Minute Video. 80s. And SPK "High Tension" (1:18) 1984. This is a Fairlight production. I heard it first, "Good Times" by Chic later. And Heaven 17 "Penthouse & Pavement" 1981. Played by John Wilson. Biggest bass guitar player for me. Bernard Edwards many times, also playing for Diana Ross.

My 2 cents for some honorable mentions, in no particular order Money - Pink Floyd I want to be straight - Ian Drury and the Blockheads Won’t get fooled again - The Who (but really, anything John Entwhistle played, like Jaco, an iconic bass player) Breadfan - Budgie (although their version of Baby please don’t go would definitely qualify as one of the most relentless bass lines) Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel YYZ - Rush

Of course you included Herbie Hancock--you love that guy! Very cool "Chameleon" made the list, I thank you! Our college jazz ensemble did it one year, and it was me on bass guitar and Dave Olson on bari sax doubling the bass line. Together it sounded huge! I'm not surprised "Broken Wings" made the list, but if it makes the list, "Danger Zone" has to. "Danger Zone" is iconic! I'm surprised "Billy Jean" didn't make it. Everyone knows that song for the bass line and the synth splashes. I can understand a number of people disagreeing with this, but a couple of Sting's bass lines are iconic: "Spirits in the Material World" and "Be Still My Beating Heart." I went into this thinking "Another One Bites" would be number one. I was wrong!

A great overview and I love how it's got a lot of classic riffs that aren't on the usual "top bass riffs" lists. My only quibble is I really feel like some Duran Duran belongs on the list, especially given you're a synth guy! Planet Earth would be a very strong contender. and if you're talking synth-bass, it's hard to find a more iconic bassline, one that virtually defined an entire era of music, than Kenny Loggin's "Danger Zone", which singlehandedly made DX-7 ROM 3A patch 12 synonymous with 80s sound.

I think you'll have to come back with a "TOP 25 Bass Riffs". I missed Queen's "Under Pressure" among others. But great job with the first ten 😊

Some great ones there. Stand by Me is still a killer bassline. Simple, beautiful, fantastic. My own list might include: Run to You - Bryan Adams Lovely Day - Bill Withers Soul Man - Sam & Dave (although any Atlantic Stax song with Donald Duck Dunn is equally as good) Devil Inside - INXS Lovecats - The Cure Town Called Malice - The Jam Billie Jean - Michael Jackson Wherever I Lay My Hat - Paul Young (Pino Palladino is king of fretless) Quiet Life - Japan (RIP Mick Karn) Walking On The Moon - The Police (so simple, yet so effective) Love Is The Drug - Roxy Music

Not so much bass riffs, but I do love any bass lines by Derek Forbes or Mick Karn, particularly “Sweat in bullet” and “The art of parties” from Simple Minds and Japan respectively.
