My 1st bike 59 years ago was a Honda S90. Eight HP, under 200 lbs, and well over 100 mpg. This was a perfect 1st bike to learn the coordination required to use both hands and both feet to operate safely. England has a law that a max 250cc bike be ridden for a full year which probably saves lives. Letting a teen onto a first bike with 40 hp and over could easily result in a tragedy. I ended up with a Honda CB450 which was adequate on the highway and great in the city.

In the old days a beginner bike was a nice sedate 250 single like a BSA. Then the Japanese came along with hundred-mile-an-hour 250 2 stroke that did not handle worth a damn. Kids wrap themselves around trees enough for the federal government to get involved and instead of Rider training and proper horsepower limit we got helmet laws. I learned how to ride on a little Honda 185 TwinStar which was the ancestor of the 250 Rebel. And 55 mph America I rode all over the State of Florida on my learner's permit . I learned my skills on that little bike and when I outgrew it I went to a bigger one and it went on to teach other people the pleasure of riding on two wheels. You will always remember your first motorcycle.

Yes. Too big bikes for beginners are a recipe for disaster. It is quite human to try to find the limits for the bikes we ride and that includes speed. And to be safe we need to be in control, all the time. And be able to read our surroundings, and all the other road users. So it is a lot, even for experienced riders. A sub 50hp bike is the way to go for the first years, I started with 100cc and 11hp and even with that low power it was mostly luck that made me survive the first years. Very good choices on this video, it is clear that you have researched your subject thoroughly. And draw from long time riding experience. Would recommend this video to everybody who are about to start riding.

You will drop it and if you find out 2 wheels are not for you, you didn't was $35,000 on a midlife crisis Harley, that you get ride of after half a season. With that said, if you now have the miles in the seat and ready to buy a Harley, you can get a very lightly used one with all the farkles and save thousands. At 55 I ride a lot and love every minute.

Insurance on the SV650 is not expensive, for the first year I paid $250 (brand new bike, new rider, and full coverage, the maximum coverage that was available). Now after 2 years it’s just above $200 per year. This is certainly a handful for a new rider and I’m sure the same is true for the MT-07. Something smaller that can also go off-road is probably the best way to start, especially because off-road experience is a great way to become a better rider.

I started on a 600cc Honda scooter (which I still have) and I still wrecked it…..twice! That’s with no clutch or gear shifting to occupy my attention. It is a long and somewhat hefty machine at 550+lbs which is what got me, the weight. I didn’t hurt it any, just some scrapes and scratches, nothing you would even notice unless I told you. I immediately went to a Harley iron 883 and the difference was extremely noticeable. Quite a bit more power with the sportster than the scooter and a lot different handling characteristics. Never had any problems with the sportster though because I was a lot more careful with it. I’m on bike number 3 now, a ‘21 Low Rider S that I traded for back in February. It’s a completely different world compared to both my other bikes and a lot of fun. You also feel like a true Badass riding that big boy cruiser!
@DifferentSpokesTV Жыл бұрын
The Lowrider S is an awesome bike. I think that motorcycles have a much more natural riding position which is due largely to your feet being wider on the pegs. The scooter chair like position is comfortable but the rider is in less control because you can't shift your weight onto the pegs to turn the bike. There are plenty of scooters I like but just feel safer and more in control on a motorcycle every time.

The best beginner motorcycle is a second-hand Japanese bike. Nice and cheap and when you drop it which you will when you first learn to ride it won't cost you a million dollars like if it was a brand new motorcycle. They had a video with a girl on a brand new 1200 Sportster he was a beginner and took a curve the wrong way and she went off the road and it was $1,400 worth of damage to the bike. I saw a little 250 Rebel for sale on the side of the road for $900 the next day it was gone. That is the kind of motorcycle you learn how to ride on.

I'm surprised as much as you tout the cb500x,you don't mention the versys x 300, imo it does everything the cb500x does but better; it looks better and is more off road capable, as well as is more comfortable to ride imo along with being much cheaper, by a few grand actually... Anyway, I hope to be buying a scram 411 here in the next month or two ideally, really dig the aesthetics and with a few farkles will be a solid dirt ready scrambler. If the color I want happens to not be available I may end up grabbing a Benelli leoncino 500 trail, which is a great scrambler option for newer riders that are also a bit on the tall side as well, like myself (I'm 6'1"). @a_ec Жыл бұрын
As far as adv bikes, the Kawasaki versys x 300 is a way better beginner adv bike than the cb500x, even tho your giving up 200cc, in terms of torque and go, it's really not too much off and the x 300 has spoked wheels which is a huge plus as well. The clearance and suspension travel is slightly better on the versys x300 also... the only possible win I would give to the cb500x is maybe low end torque, with the Kawasaki having the old Ninja 300 engine, it's revs really high, although Kawasaki did tune it down a bit to make it more off road friendly. So yeah, in every single way, including looks, imo, the versys x 300 is a much better beginner option for am adv and an adv and long distance touring bike than the Honda cb500x, especially with the price tag brand new just under 6 grand. Oh and the new 2023 model has switchable abs in the rear now also, so kawasaki listened to their custys on that tip it seems....anyway, nice video overall for sure, just had to add this thought in, cause for every reason one might look at the cb500x for a beginner adv bike, the versys x 300 s it beat for sure. Oh and for scramblers the svartpilen 401 is way better than both the cl500 and the scram 411 and I actually like the scram 411 much more than the Himalayan. So yeah, anyone looking for a.scrambler style here in the states, the svartpilen 401 is the way to go...it's a shame we dont get some of the European scrambler bikes , they have some seemingly really cool options over yonder...
@DifferentSpokesTV Жыл бұрын
Good points. I keep wishing that Kawasaki put the 400cc motor in the Versys but they're saying that this would require a complete frame redesign. Yes, The Svartpilen is a great bike as well. I guess I sometimes forget about Husky because they don't have a dealer near where I live.
@a_ec Жыл бұрын
@@DifferentSpokesTV yeah, dealer availability aside, unless you are really into hard core dual sport or straight up mx or single track dirt bike riding, its easy to forget about husqy sometimes, esp given the svart and vit are only a few years old a piece and they dropped the 701 versions of each and those are pretty much their non Enduro/mx offerings, tho they really nailed it with the svart 401, if you're only gonna have a couple bikes on offer for street riding, might as well nail it as much as they have with that one...only gripe I have personally, is I wish they would've gone with a 19 inch front instead of two 17s, but I guess they weren't really going for a true scrambler, but the option would be nice.

I guess it did not make the beginners list because it has "too much" ponies: the MT-07 has been on my visual radar when I rode around town the last two years, one dude popped a wheelie in front of the cops, they laughed it off. it might be a good starter bike too. If I get a good price for my old war horse, Suzuki GSX 1200 98 hp, 98 NewtonMeter (I kill anyone who tells me what number that is in foot-pounds) at 4500 revs. The GSX 1200 would be a very cheap alternative widow maker 2,9 sec to accelerate from 0-100 kmh^-1 And a bike you can fix yourself, no ABS, chain drive carburetors........old junk

Yeah, the Suzuki is definitely not a starter. The MT-07 is a great bike but it is punchy in the mid range and can be dangerous to new riders. It depends on the person and clutch and throttle control. Brooke like how light and comfortable it was but still found the power intimidating.

ide say a honda shadow is a great begginer bike wife room to grow on and they are easy to find used. i cant see any logic in a beginner buying a new bike unless they absolutly want it and will go to the motocycle safty class

Good point. The only problem is that these days used bikes have gotten rather pricey. Maybe it's because of the supply chain problems slowing down new bike deliveries but used bikes and specifically off-road used bikes are approaching or even surpassing new bike prices.

All great suggestions, but there are some problems: many of these are new bikes and mostly for average sized riders. If you're taller like me and have a budget, going with an older, bigger bike is preferable. I wanted my first bike to be the Vulcan S, and I am still very interested in it along with the Hyosung GV 650 for their design philosophies, but my first bike was a 2005 Honda VTX 1300 C. It's been a great bike that I've had for two seasons now and I'm sure I will own it for a while, but looking back, I do sometimes wonder if I should have gone with a Yamaha Road Star Warrior, a Vulcan Mean Streak, or a VTX 1800. New riders can competently ride older, bigger bikes--you just need to be mature and humble.

Yes, I agree. I started on a big bike and lived to tell about. I think cruisers are generally better suited to beginners because their lower seat heights. For taller riders adventure bikes and dual sports are another good option. You're lucky that seat height is never an issue.

Unsure as to the wisdom of recommending the KLX300 to new riders, it doesn't even have ABS.

That Vulcan is an ugly bike, also on no planet is. 67hp bike suitable for beginners. Has nothing to do with rider maturity or whether they have used a clutch before. Over 50hp is too much for someone who is allegedly one. That is one big right turn into a bump into a telephone pole. Way too much.
