My personal favorite of this year is Saviors. I liked how Green Day experimented with their sound while turning back the clock with sings like Look Ma No Brains and The American Dream is killing me. To having original and different sounding songs like Goodnight Adeline and Father to a son. So that's why Saviors is my favorite of this year

Minor Addition to The Cure’s Placement; I’m so glad that Simon Gallup decided to stay on board with The Cure after he ALMOST quit the band in 2021, because Songs Of A Lost World offers probably the THICKEST bass work of his entire career with The Cure. Obviously yes Robert Smith is still their king, but you gotta respect Simon for still blowing our minds to this day as well with his work.

My favorite for the year was Opeth's The Last Will and Testament. Adding Mikael's death growls back in to the ever improving prog rock side of their music to tell a compelling and dark story just compels me to listen to this over and over.

Caligula's Horse - Charcoal Grace Easily my favorite album of the year. It was one of those albums that just clicked instantly for me (though I've read that it's a grower for a lot of people), and I've been listening to it on repeat since January.

Great list! Some of my favorite albums this year were Entabeni by Vulvodynia, Belaya Polosa by Molchat Doma, and Lost in Love, Found in Pain by Miyavi. It was a great year for music :)

Entabeni has to be my standout for the year. Lwandile killed it as lead vocalist and the band came together so damn well. The evolution from Psychosadistic design is also great to Entabeni is fantastic.

My 2024 list top 1 is tied between Cane Hill and Knocked Loose.A Piece of Me I Never Let You Find is so smooth and heavy but still beautiful and polished. You wont go before you supposed to is the contrary chaos, destruction, noise and creative. So its tie for me, both are AMAZING but in different ways. Then comes a huge list that includes Gaerea, Blood Incantantion, Better Lovers, Fontaines DC, Job for a Cowboy, HERIOT was also so SICK, Body Count, Judas Priest, CANDY, High on Fire, the list just keeps going, there were SO MANY FUCKING GREAT ALBUMS.

My album of the year is probably too mainstream here but I absolutely loved Saxon's Hell, Fire, and Damnation, released in January. Biff showed how you can still kick ass in your 70s. And he still has the onstage energy of someone half his age. Well worth getting.

Caligula's Horse - Charcoal Grace (progressive metal | AUS) - Came out early in the year and I just kept repeating it over and over again. 2. Ihsahn - IHSAHN (progressive/"orchestral" black metal | NOR) - Papa Emperor himself reinvents himself and makes a self-titled record that doesn't make you roll your eyes at the lack of actual title. 3. Eternal Storm - A Giant Bound to Fall (progressive death metal | ESP) - If Opeth continued their prog death years and moved to Spain without singing in Spanish. 4. Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere (progressive sci-fi electronic space death metal | USA) - If Morbid Angel got stuck in space with Tangerine Dream for a few years. 5. Opeth - The Last Will and Testament (symphonic progressive rock with growls and flute | SWE) If you love 70s prog and know the bands Van der Graaf Generator and Jethro Tull, I present to you "Van der Growl Jethrorator".

Hammerfall put out an album this year, so it was guaranteed to be my top album, and my Spotify yearly review confirmed it. Hammerfall has been putting out consistently good albums for nearly 30 years, and they’re my best example of how a band can stay excellent by not changing much. It’s comfort music for me, and well timed since I really needed that comfort this year.

I don’t listen to a lot of newer music, usually because I’m at the mercy of what music streaming recommends me. But the album I’ve been listening to almost non stop this year was Charcoal Grace by Caligula’s horse. With each release of theirs, the music has been getting more tight knit and polished, but also pushing what they can do with the progressive metal sound. It’s an instant favorite album for me overall and I hope they get more listeners as they keep making more music.

Most of these made my personal top 10 as well. Some other GREAT albums I think are noteworthy and highly recommend are "The Collective" by Kim Gordon, "Cool World" by Chat Pile, "Wall of Eyes" and "Cutouts" by The Smile, "Every Bridge Burning" by Nails, "Rituals" by Occults, "Frog in Boiling Water" by DIIV and "Gone Dark" by Human Impact! Smile by Porter Robinson is my favorite album this year. The emotionally heavy subject material, contrasted by blown out electro pop instrumental, while still being incredibly easy to listen to make it a true masterpiece for me. Please check it out if you like smiling through disaster

The top album is easily The Black by Imminence. It's a brutally gorgeous metalcore album with string accompaniments that just grip you. If you haven't heard it check it out. Heaven Shall Burn is a great song to start with, but my personal favourite is the title track. It's aggressively heavy and outstandingly beautiful at the same time. Ridiculous what they did.

My top three would be Jack White, The Warning and The Cure (only heard that one once so far but it really is haunting). After that it gets hard to rank them. Reading the comments I’m thinking that you could put together at least another 10 albums for a perfectly valid top 10. I would not have predicted that Linkin Park would do a surprise comeback album and not make my list, but it’s just not in the league of the others (even ignoring the controversy).

For most of this year, my favorite album was Brittany Howard’s What Now, but then Lauren Mayberry pulled a sneak attack with Vicious Creature right at the very end of the year. That’s more of a pop record, though, while Howard’s is more of a rock/soul/R&B hybrid. I’ve never been huge on The Cure, but I do really like Songs for a New World, and it’s definitely one of the year’s best rock records.

My favorite album of the year was actually a late arrival in Horrorborn's second studio album, Illuminating Doom. It released December 5th and it completely stole the crown for my list. Up to this point, Horrorborn had been a Deathcore band that I feel were excellent at creating a gloomy atmosphere. They proved this year that they still had what it took, but what surprised me was the complete genre shift. They went from releasing Deathcore to releasing a Death/Doom album, and it really lives up to it's name. On top of that, this was their first release to feature any sort of clean vocals, and I think it really fits well in the tone of the album. Illuminating Doom is Horrorborn maturing a bit in the way that they wrote about the deeply gloomy and depressing topics that usually write about in a more artistic and creative way. Tracks such as the title track and As the Heart Withers really shows what I'm talking about, and even Lamentation Song really allows the gloomy atmosphere to sink in. I also really enjoyed that rather than rhe synths they had on the debut in 2021, they stepped things up and have an actual piano now. I also want to mention my second place album, Messenger's Quest by Triton Project. It *was* going to be my album of the year until Illuminating Doom released. This album has 5 tracks, including two that total about an hour on their own, and the whole journey of the story within the album is just amazing. It feels like what I would have expected from Dream Theater if Mike Portnoy had never left the band. It very much has a 2000s DT vibe and I love it. The opening and title track is a tad over 9 minutes and it it's over before you know it as it sets the stage for the rest of the story. It's really something that needs to be experienced to understand.

❤❤❤ for Blood Incantation I haven’t really seen an album that transcended its genre like “Absolute Elsewhere” has in nearly a decade. (2018’s “Where Owls Know My Name” from Rivers of Nihil being the last record I remember getting this level of universal praise) It had fans from all over the metal and rock spectrum give it praises…so it’s not only cemented its place as one of the best of the year….i imagine we’ll be seeing it on eventual Albums of the Decade lists in 5 years time. Also…. As a mainly prog/prog metal fan I wasn’t expecting to see many of my picks here (Opeth/IOTUNN/DVNE/Alcest…etc) but all those are worth checking out… But as an HM, one album that should appeal to you and your viewers is the 5th album from the supergroup Black Country Communion, titled simply “5”. Easily my favorite record from this group since their first two records in the late 00s. Joe Bonamassa’s guitar style switches seamlessly from traditional blues to hard rock without little effort to accompany his soulful vocals. Glenn Hughes’ bass adds weight, but his backing vocals still to this day remind the listener of why he still is the “voice of rock” hitting the same notes he did over 50 years ago when he was in Deep Purple and Trapeze. Jason Bonham very much invokes his father’s drumming style, and for once (one issue I’ve had with prior releases) Derek Sherenian is not underutilized and is actually able to shine on this album. Definitely give the new Black Country Communion album a listen if you haven’t.
