Female Betta! I add one to my community tanks and they have been very peaceful. Although their fins aren’t as eye-catching as the male betta, they are more mobile and will twirl their top fin while maneuvering. Also the females don’t get blown by water current as much. Overall I’m very happy with female bettas! (Low price too)

cories! My cories are quite skittish, but I ended up breeding them and the babies are not scared of me at all. They're so cute and active, I don't think a kid could ever get bored of them

I don't expect my 9 month old to have her own aquarium yet, but she loves the 100 gallon with big severum, threadfin acara, parrot fish and clown loaches she watches and tries to touch them for about 20 mins at a time . My 20 gallon guppy tank has 50 beautiful guppies and she could care less!!!

Guys, if you are shopping at petsmart, for an example, neon tetras are awful to get. They are always sick and as an experienced fish keeper I find them hard to keep alive

Great video, I think the perfect fish is definitely the Betta, and if u have a nice (not big but not small) size tank then a beta, with a mystery snail and Cory’s and even some red cherry shrimp gives huge variety of occupants and with some live plants also for the shrimp and betta will make a very rewarding experience without needing a big tank (I’m talking about 3 or 4 Cory’s of course, just enough they have company)

i started fish keeping by building a home made waterfall with a pond inside a planters box. i started with that and added a betta and 3 danios. i spent some time reading up on how to care for them , after a weeek i ended up buying a 10 gal aquarium for them. after a year i got rid of the waterfall and pond and i have 5 fish tanks now. i have fish, snails and shrimp and i love it!

The long Fin Black Skirt Tetras do get a fairly decent size. Really fun to watch. I'd agree they truthfully need at least a 29 gallon tank but are super hardy.

Great ideas! Wish my daughter had picked easier fish. She went intermediate with Pea Puffers and truly fresh water Bumblebee Gobies (bought from Dan's Fish). Fortunately, she did her research and her fish are thriving.

5:42 I have one of those frogs and i don’t really feed it the same food as my fish I usually feed it frog food and it works great and it sinks right down to the bottom and I got a happy frog and it’s healthy like everything in my tank snails are healthy and the fish are happy and healthy and I just love waking up to feed those happy and excited fish

I almost killed my corys with salt too. And it was such a small amount! I don’t remember where I read it, but in my research I learned to avoid using salt with bottom dwellers. The salt water is heavier and they get a higher concentration than the rest of the tank. Funny how even after years of experience, there is always more to learn! Thanks for being honest with your own experience and struggles!

What a great video. Actually ranking fish into categories for a specific purpose was brilliant. Wholeheartedly agree with everything in top two rows! I would probably revisit the black skirt glofish though. I had five (every color although they might have six colors?) In a 14 gallon cube from Petco. They were fine and plenty of room since only inhabitants other than mystery snail and couple Cory. They've since moved in to a 75 gallon cause I have MTS haha! But one of each color in a 20 gallon long would be brilliant along with as many plants as you want! This gives them plenty of space, more stable than standard 10 gallon, and more area side to side that they appreciate. Plus you still have the entire bottom for panda Corys (my fav along with julii), khuli loaches, and a mystery snail! Last recommend is undergravel filter with very small pump (Co-op keychain USB pump is perfect). So many benefits and so little maintenance. And you never have to tear them up to clean under as so many folks believe! Or go with one giant Betta - mine is absolutely my favorite fish asking with his three girlfriends who all took over the 14 cube. Yep, they all get along fantastic after couple days of male letting everyone know he is the boss. They especially love lots of plants and two floating Betta logs. Please keep making videos - love em all. Maybe Collab with Chris again for fishtank review once your daughter's tank is up and running 😁

I have my Black Skirt Tetras in a 30-gallon tank. They would also do well in a 20-Long or 29-gallon tank. Tiger Barbs are more of a challenge, since they really should be in a large school (10-15+) with plenty of space to limit aggression.

Goldfish, Angelfish and neon tetra and black neon tetra are my favorites so far. But the goldfish was my first so I have a special kind of love for my first fish

You should really give swordtails a try someday. I do agree not the most kid-friendly fish but not a fail in my experience. You don't need a larger tank for their speed or size but for a community. Unlike guppies or platies swordtails much prefer a larger community than you would expect for fish their size. Start with 4 or 6 with the !:2 m to f ratio. I would say a 20 gallon long is the lowest I would go but 30(same footprint but taller) is preferable. On the flipside I think their worth it because the tail shape is really cool and the females aren't any less colorful like guppies are.

Could do “fairy shrimp” they are sort of like a freshwater sea monkey. I feed them to my African dwarf frogs. Your daughter is adorable. My daughter picked glo fish. Already had a 50 gallon species only black and white skirt tetra tank so the glo version fit right in and added some color to my tank which is nice. Balanced it with red plants which she also picked.😂She likes it and they absolutely grew on me. Glad I have them and they aren’t crammed in a 5 gallon somewhere under a black light.

There are the ghost shrimp that are fresh water and they are very comically entertaining in my opinion and I usually get them as second stage occupants for the fish tank after a month of adding plants and prepping the tank before getting other fish, but they tend not to last long because once the other fish are introduced they often times turn into a tasty snack. Must have sponge filters if you want to see their offspring grow up. They can be great fun for kids as opposed to salty seamonkeys.

I think my zebra and leopard danio are pretty colourful now that they're home from the pet store :-) The zebras are yellow/gold with blue-green tinged stripes and the leopards look like rainbow trout. I also have Kyathit that are green-blue striped with orange tipped

Welcome to the FishFam Gamer Girl! I'm sure you'll do great with any fish you pick. My nephews always liked the crowntail bettas since they have all the color but are still "tough" looking. They also wanted freshwater crabs, crayfish, and sharks. I've noticed that many girls tend to gravitate towards small colorful, but peaceful schooling fish (glofish, tetras, etc) or a betta with flowing fins (which is a little harder to keep without having some kind of tail/fin issue). There are, of course, exceptions.

You left out the White Cloud Mountain Minnow. Great little fish, super hardy, will be fine in an unheated 10 gallon. If you can't keep them, then fishkeeping is probably not for you. Cherry Barbs are another fish that I really like and find very hardy. Really colours up in a planted tank, so I agree with that choice. Those Black Skirt Glofish, although not my taste at all, are super hardy. Friend of mine's kid got those from a pet store that just sold it to them with the tank and everything, no cycling (my pet hate) and they all survived.

The White Cloud Mountain Minnow would be a great fish for kids too! No heater, not picky about water or food. Plus! the males display to each other to impress the females.

What about considering Ember tetras, Chili rasboras, female bettas, glass catfish, and shrimp? if you put a lot of small fish in the habitat there will always be action.

Tbh i would have put all lifebearers on fail, even if you have perfect params the babies just come WAY too fast to handle them if you werent fully prepared, especially if your LFS doesnt take in homebred lifebearers

Search on KZbin for "pickle jar shrimp tank" or "vase shrimp tank." There are several vids that teach you how to do exactly what you're thinking of, and it's not too hard. You do need to have all the elements to maintain the nitrogen cycle... nitrifying bacteria, lots of live plants and moss, etc. Good luck!

Cherry shrimp, neo davidai or smth I think, are what a lotta people use for smaller tanks and bowls. Crystal shrimp (neo caridina?) possibly but they're a different, more expensive species that's a little pickier on water parameters. Shrimp can definitely work and there are other less colorful and hardy species that aren't seen for sale too often that can survive in as little as 1-3gal of water, you just won't be able to keep more then around a dozen adults of anything and need to allow time for the setup to mature and start growing algae to add any shrimp. Also, ghost shrimp are pretty hardy and not difficult to breed, they're possibly the only option that will take hard or soft water and like amano shrimp, are salt tolerant, just not full saltwater afaik. Ghost shrimp though, I'd point those out as ones to avoid for 5gal or lower, I've bred them in a 10gal tank and they're not aggressive if they're well fed, the issue is my females got as big as 2in long even though they often start breeding at as small as 1in, half their average max size, so while they're easy to keep, keeping more then 2-3 and them being able to easily turn around in tight spaces will be an issue for a small bowl. Hopefully you find something that works for ya and can enjoy though, shrimp are super fun and I need to get some in a 5gal for a breeding project eventually, it's just that the super fancy, colorful ones are expensive lol

I have read that aponogeton crispus need a dormancy period so do you guys remove them from your tank to replicate the dormancy conditions or you leave them in your tank??? Any replies would be appreciated

"hard or at least neutral water" is a little bit misleading, since hardness and pH are two separate scales. Soft, neutral water is totally achievable and wouldn't be great for your livebearers.

@@Kevin-ci4ky I tried that once, trying to lower my ph. It took so much product to bring my pH down that in the end I just picked fish that like higher pH. Figured that would be more enjoyable than constantly fighting my tap water lol.

I don't think bettas are that hardy. Fin rot and especially constipation is extremely common in them. Most are also quite weak thanks to the method they are bred and kept in. Plakat bettas are healthier though

I just don’t agree that much about the betta. Of course they are really pretty and easy to take care but they treat it like a decoration, every time I see someone buying it for kids, they don’t really care about the heating and using products for the water and here where I live they’re always sold in tanks with mirrors, making them always looking for some danger because of their reflection and omg I’m really sad about them being kept in like a cup of water :(
