Per Painted World - it's not my absolute favorite area in the game, but I actually appreciate the map as a whole for two reasons: 1. It's paced well, in a way that a lot of areas aren't. You start with a lot of snow, slowly start to find ruins, then find the massive bridge reminiscent of the original Painted World and a chapel. You back out, walk along some cliffs, and boom, large village as a midpoint. Then after that climax, you back off to snowy hills again, mimicking the start of the DLC, then to the chapel's underbelly which is more rotten than the village was to reveal the true corruption within the painting. Then you go to the boss and wrap it up. Very nicely paced in a way that not a lot of areas aren't (although the enemy spam in places can be an issue). 2. It's reminiscent of watching a painter paint. When they start, it's all the background, no details. In this case, snow. Then they start adding some details but may write over them, the crumbling towers. Then the centerpiece in broad strokes, followed by refining the details around the centerpiece, then back to the centerpiece for the detail work. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it's how I've always interpreted it.

I think you're ignoring the enemy labels too much, boss's are meant to be hard that's why they are called bosses. When the entire area is overly difficult for absolutely no reason then it's an unnecessarily annoying design. Your normal enemy and boss should never be comparable so when there's an area full of very annoying and hard enemies its bad design. Honestly, I think that any area ranking boils down to a player's preferred approach to the game and how well that area caters to it (so these community polls basically work out to an exercise in seeing how many people play the game like you do). DMod likes to speedrun areas, but more significantly is a very aggressive player overall and an area that rewards slow, measured advances, drawing enemies out one-by-one, using ranged options,etc., while punishing charging-in aggression is almost guaranteed to be not fun (which in retrospect explains a lot about what he's posted about Dark Souls 2 on this channel in the past, because _Scholar of the First Sin_ and its alleged gankiness are basically an entire game's worth of tactical combat encounters designed to punch aggression and speed in the face). Whereas I'm almost the exact opposite, so places like Irithyll Dungeon are no problem for me while ones like Archdragon Peak and the Ringed City, despite their amazing visuals and level layouts just aren't particularly fun for me to play. It's all completely subjective and dependent on what you find fun about Soulsborne gameplay... ...except Farron Keep. That place just sucks.

Cathedral's actually a hell of a lot of fun for me (shame about the boss - fun fight, but felt like a middle finger for expecting Aldrich there like the game built up to). ...and Archdragon Peak can take its bullshit enemies and placement and go die in a dumpster fire.

I think the level has nice design and though some parts seem extremely different from other parts they make it so it makes sense and in that way the place doesn't feel messy and piled up, along with the interesting platforming and looping which has always to me been a satisfying addition to levels. I find the enemy placement not only good and doesnt feel out of place, but lore friendly which I very much appreciate. The only thing I dislike about this place is it feels like a chore to do everything. You could say that opinion is altered by the fact I've done it so many times or laziness but I think it's just big to the point it's annoying to go everywhere and yet dark souls 1 had an emphasis on travel and made it exciting to me, and that was like the whole early game. I also found the deep boss fight to be very interesting in terms of lore and connections, but I don't even think about it as a boss.

I don’t understand this list, it’s like I get hes a speed runner, but this list shouldn’t be based on how easily a level is to run through, it should be based on how well designed it is, and what your first impressions were. I feel like he doesn’t understand that most players are casual and aren’t trying to rush through the game as fast as they can, so it’s really annoying when he complains about “annoying enemies” and “oh you just run through it” like he should just judge them based on their design not convenience for speed runs

I'm going to be honest here, some of your comments and problems in these videos are really annoying. For example, what is this argument? "Knights who have way too much poise in a game where I have none." Yeah mate, your playing a dex build. Big surprise you have no poise. I've played through this game multiple times with both Quality and Heavy builds and I have plenty of poise on both builds. Another example: you said that players usually run past knights on the High Wall because they are 'annoying' to fight. Wtf? If you want to run past stuff because you're bad at fighting them, that's your problem. I've never found knights 'annoying'. They are well balanced, easily parry-able and have very well telegraphed attacks. Archdragon Peak. Again. Just because you're bad at fighting the dragons doesn't make them bad or worse. Either learn to fight them with a dex build or use a different build. Lastly, Irithyll. Hard to run through? Seriously? Just because an area doesn't comply with speed-running (which Dark Souls wasn't even really designed for anyway) doesn't take away from it in anyway. Its like if I started hating on Halo CE because I find the tricks in Silent Cartographer hard to do. No. So in summary, can you please use some better arguments to back up points on things you think. Because some of the arguments you currently use are really weak.
@crabdragon2435 жыл бұрын
James Clayton Could not agree more. And considering this is a video about the Best Areas, it was like 2/3rds negative. And I get that negatives have to be brought up to be fair, but it seems like he didn't care to talk about the positives of the level design much at all

@TheNoble2 The fact his arguments are so weak and bitchy means that he clearly didn't put 'time and care' into the video. this video is an opinion piece and there is no reason to treat it as anything else. The fact that they are one of, if not the only enemies in the game that isn’t any mutated monster or undead, but is an animal, which adds to the untamed, beautiful atmosphere 4. Then I continued playing until I got all the achievements. After that I started Ds3 awesome game but after finishing it (dlc's and all) I just can't get myself to start a new character or even ng+. To sum up I would say that I enjoyed way more the bosses and going through the world of Ds1, as for Ds3 I only like some bosses but the idea of fighting them is not enough to carry my will to start a new game.

Edit: its weird for me to see so many constant complaints about DS3 enemy design (not just from you), it seems like people dont actually want to fight anything. Enemies in this game have movesets to learn and different ways to punish, and for me it makes for way more engaging levels. Some enemies, like thralls and the little dragon minions, are designed specifically to fuck you up if you just run up to them and spam R1, which is probably why people bitch about them so much.

From my perspective, most of the fanbase either fights everything or runs past everything. Those who fight everything run into trouble when they have a room with 7 jailers and no viable way of luring them out to 1 on 1 fights, while those who run past everything get frustrated whenever they get into a bridge with 1 gargoyle that has a hitbox as big as the bridge itself, leading to them being knocked off 80% of the time. The proper way of beating the game is reading the area and determining weather a room should be fought and cleared or if it should be sprinted through without even drawing your blade, using the best of both worlds. For the game is designed to punish either extreme.

I can feel the cold air and the heat inside my armor unlike any other game. It’s cozy, but you can tell how is has been extended for far too long and how far it has fallen and literally decayed from a gentle place for those in need to a disgusting mess. You can role-play as either a barbarian brute destroying this peaceful place for forlorn souls or a benevolent liberator. Wolves and vikings are cool and fun to fight. Being a sole warrior walking though snowy woods and escaping undefeated is awesome. Irithyll feels frozen and hostile, but Ariandel feels snowy and comforting. I love that difference in atmosphere. That being said, I’m not a fan of the ice lake or the roots down there, it’s a way worse version of the Haligtree in ER.

Still asking and curious. Why FromSoft is obsessed to make swampy areas in Dark Souls 3? Road of Sacrifices, Consumed King Garden, Smouldering Lake, Ringed City, Irithyl of the Boreal Valley, Profaned Capital, and especially, Farron Keep. They made a lot of swampy areas and some of them are poisonous and even toxic, like Blighttown, the only poisonous swamp area in Dark Souls 1 doesn't fuck you enough, so they just add more swampy level and upgrade the debuff effect from poison to toxic to fuck you more. Swamp level highly decrease mobility and made you fat rolling, slow walk, and unable to run. But at least, FromSoft balanced Dark Souls 1 swampy area with Rusted Iron Ring. Dark Souls 3 had nothing to balance this out, but instead, they put a lot of enemies in this kind of area with super speed, fast attack, and attack techniques that will one hit you

Worst for me is the Guardian Ape, mainly because the boss just doesn't fit Sekiro's playstyle. Favorite is probably, Sword Saint Isshin, despite the difficulty. I think it's a fun challange.

I’m honestly shocked that Archdragon even made it to top 10, hell, even top FIVE, like, i get it, it’s arguably the most beautiful place in the game, but HOLY FUCK it’s the most BULLSHIT one. Those snake bitches that seem to have infinite stunlock almost every time they show up (multiply it by 100 if they gang up on you which is likely to happen every single time you fight them) those fucking Rock Lizards that are not only placed in some of the worst areas for their mechanics, like placing them around corners, making them face the edge and charge at you, causing them to knock you off the edge 9 times out of 10, then that staircase with like 4 of them, each in a corner, causing them to box you in a tiny space and alternate their attacks meaning you have ZERO chance at escaping and all you can really do is put the controller down and grab a snack until you die. Also that stupid fucking Wyvern Mini Boss that literally comes almost straight after the Ancient Wyvern Bossfight, (and tends to kill you too many times) and speaking of the mini boss wyvern, where the fuck did it go?? It just flies away and then you never fight it again. Plus, when you ring that damn bell, arguably the only thing that makes this area good (the looks) is just stripped away and you’re left with a constant storm until you kill easily the most BULLSHIT boss in the fucking game. I have no complaints about the Nameless King being a multi phase bossfight (i actually love those types of bossfights, mostly cuz Bloodborne is my first Souls game), but rather, i have a problem with it’s phases, rather than having a problem with the fact that he has two phases in the first place. First phase, that dragon is BULLSHIT, it’s AOE fire attack after hovering above you with one of the most inconsistent hitboxes in the game, you can be on the edge of the attack and be fine, while the next time around, you can be in the same spot relative to the attack, but you get knocked down for some reason? And don’t get me started with the attack when the wyvern circles you while the king readies a thunder spear, your camera can’t keep up with the thing and all you can really do is spam dodge and hope the invincibility frames work to your advantage, or listen for sound cues to know when to dodge, which is TEDIOUS. AS. FUCK. The Second phase is completely fine in my opinion, the attacks are strong and fast but not undodgeable, more often than not you die cuz you got greedy, and the strategy for taking him out in the second phase is pretty similar to that of the twin princes, just keep dodging towards him or to his back till the combo ends, then wail on him with whatever stamina you have left, keep that up and you can easily take him out. The one thing that i ABSOLUTELY HATE about this fight though, is the fucking arena, it’s a goddamn mess throughout the fight, and the fact that it’s literally animated in such a way that it looks like a river current, makes it feel like you’re fighting this boss on a giant fucking treadmill, except you’re the only one that seems to be getting dragged while the boss is completely unaffected. I felt like i wasnt getting anywhere while sprinting and burning all my stamina just to close distance, while it looked like the king was moving around freely (which REALLY messed with my attack and dodge timing). Hell, even my friend who LOVED the Ornstein and Smough fight which she beat on her like, 7th try, while hollow, without any humanity (and without Solaire or whoever tf the summon is for that fight) was worn out so bad by the nameless king (it took her like 14 attempts) and Archdragon as a whole, that she pledged to never go back to that area...e v e r (tho she had to go back at one point during an NG+ run cuz she needed the Dragonchaser’s ashes, and all i can say is r i p) In summary, Bullshit area with bullshit enemies leading up to a bullshit boss (The the dragonslayer set is pretty neat tho, not gonna lie, it’s just sad that you can only get it AFTER the Nameless King of Bullshit)
@paveljuga70684 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU! I thought I was the only one, I hate that area so much, probably the only area in DS3 that I couldn't wait to get out of. The snake enemies are just a pain to deal with, the ones with the daggers gank and combo you all day long and have a pretty minimalistic tell to when they are parrying and if they do parry you successfully, you are screwed. And of course the big snakes with axes that have the hitbox of a school bus and somehow can hit you through walls when you didn't even know they were going after you (happened to me, I lost about 100 000 souls on my first playthrough because of it, my first rage quit in DS3). I wouldn't be surprised if I ever got hit by them back in Irithyll dungeon, through 20 walls and another fucking game. Ancient Wyvern is probably the worst boss in the game because the entire point is that you have to run through all these fuckers which is frustrating enough but you have the dragon attacking you as well. The mini-boss dragon is the most broken fight I have ever seen as the camera just refuses to function properly. It's not even all that hard but for most of the fight, I didn't even know what was happening. And the Nameless King, now the 2nd phase is pretty good, even though he is rapid and hits like a freight train, I don't mind a challenging boss. But the 1st phase is purely a fight with the cameraman, nothing more. It's so frustrating to do, hard to tell the correct distance to dodge his attacks and hit the dragon. It just left me feeling pissed even after I defeated the King himself. The summon knights and the Havel fight are fun and for the most part, the visuals and atmosphere are incredible (even though kinda bland in some places), but if you take 1 second to take it in, you're gonna get shanked from behind by 3 snakes.

Honestly, I think a walk-up to a final boss in a city that was once booming and is now devoid of life is kinda what I wish souls had. I know that the enemies add challenge, but that's what I mean; we're so used to getting ganked that a walk-up to the final boss where there's nothing but an empty once lived-in world and our thoughts is a stark change. The sea of ash before gael is the closest thing I can think of to that feeling; desolate and empty, but life clings on past it's due date.

It's really strange to me when people say "this area is bad because..." then go on to talk about all the reasons it's challenging. This is Dark Souls. The often extreme challenge is core to the experience. When that guy was shitting on Grand Archives I was thinking "these are all the reasons I love that area, found it absolutely terrifying and left it behind with a feeling of great accomplishment."

Honestly the undead settlement is the best place for me. Its certainly the best designed. That area has so many branching paths that all loop around each other so well. There is more to do in that area than any other area in the game. The amount of secrets, shortcuts, and side paths makes it the best area from a game design standpoint

Irythill isn't that good for me. There's a lot of annoying enemies, the level is very linear and it has large swamp that slows your movement. It still has good overall design and a great boss, but I don't think it's that good. Ringed City isn't good either, most of the level is a flat area, also the ganks are annoying af. I know it's because of ascetics, but ascetics aren't the most important part of the games. Painted World of Ariandel is just annoying ganks and some cheap traps. Anor Londo is just a pack of slugs to kill, overall a pretty short area. Archdragon Peak can be described by one sentence: too many fucking ganks. Also Grand Archives is a great location for me. Enemies may be annoying, but the level design is in my opinion one of the best in soulsborne. There's wax, a new mechanic (something extremely rare in Dark Souls 3), nice shortcuts, glorious visual design, and one of the best bosses in Dark Souls 3.

Am I the only one who liked the whole game? I mean I did not found "ridiculous" or "worst" any area of the game, I really liked every single area more or less. You just need to find each enemy's weakness which is easy and thats it. Learning to dodge MOBS properly isn't hard you just need to try rather than get scared on sight. The only "walls" in the game are the bosses on first sight that is. I ve grown tired of criticisms and complaints ALL the time, ridiculous that awful this they should have this or that and being the only one who's ok. I've only had ONE problem in the game and thats in the Ringed City with Judicators (giant summoners) but found their weakness and checkmate
